My daughter's bike needed new bearings. I have a cartridge replacement but the brackets fixed cup will not come off the bike. I feel like I've tried everything - wrenches, breaker bars, tapping, penetrating oil, and even heating with a torch. Any other tips?
concretedogUpdate on the #10QuidTrek! Half hour of test riding around in wet conditions... its all good, but some upgrades on the list. Priority is the gaffa tape repaired saddle needs to go, second is new tyres as bald/slick 25c with my weight in the wet is good fun but only when concentrating! I have some 28c that should fit, as they are on a set of RS30 wheels that are probably better than these, I might just swap the cassete over.. #biketooter #bikerepair
ThomasLast week, during our traditional Easter family reunion, I took my father's old Peugeot touring bike from the basement and gave it a quick check-up. This was the first time it's been used in at least 35 years. I believe it still has the original tires, chain and sprocket. Indexed shifters have come a long way since the 1980s: it's not for nothing that Shimano SIS can be switched to non-indexed. Good enough for the occasional 10km ride downtown and back.

In February I wrote about Chinese chains that were worn after 580 km and 320 km of use.
There was some discussion on Mastodon about the economy of chains: I argued that a cheap SRAM chain (12 to 14 Euro) is more economical than, e.g., a Wippermann Connex, even if doesn't last as long.
As an experiment I tracked the wear of my next cheap SRAM 1031 chain: I was right.
The sprocked, a cheap Chinese 11-25, had been damaged by the first Chinese chain, and I replaced it, too.

Cycling today: the weather was cool but sunny. I took this photo just before the 200m downhill ride from Waldenburg to the Hohenlohe plain (which is fast).
Also today: 2600 km in March, 7000 km this year, and more than 30,000 km year over year.
In other words, that's 9 Taiwanese SRAM 1031 chains, or 95 Chinese RiderACE chains. #bikerepair

For Pete's Sake 🏴 🏳️🌈So got my bike back from the "Vet" (local bike repair shop) excellent service as per usual.
Prognosis ok(ish) two new sets of bearings but I do, ultimately, need two new wheels built.
Unfortunately I'm using Tannis puncture proof tyres and he couldn't source the right sized wheels for my existing tyres. He says when my tyres are worn, we'll have a conversation about options. Possibly going tubeless with a decent sealant.
So just the bearings and a general service for the moment.
About to take her out for a jaunt. Haven't cycled in well over 10 months due to ongoing spinal issues. So won't be cycling far. Probably just to the nearest big parkland / common area and/or along the Wandle trail.
