I know mastodon.social is seen as a detriment to some in the fediverse

But have you ever considered my story?

We take m.s for granted, a large part of the fediverse literally wouldn't exist unless @Gargron built a suitable GNU/Social successor.

The fediverse is quick to point fingers at Mastodon and Gargron, but thanks to him, you have a platform to do that on.

We love you big G, you are my hero ❤️

@dansup @pixelfed so true! thanks so much for everything you did @Gargron ! I am not sure if the fediverse would even be a thing without @Mastodon !!!
@dansup
hehe that's some thanksgiving energy here
@pixelfed @Gargron

@dansup @pixelfed @Gargron the fashy mods, tho. The raging zionism, christofascism and suppression of any and every opinion that might expose those.

Very X. Much Musky. Such Zuck. How Dorsey.

Have you all considered that?

Strong supporter of #pixelfed. Not of m.s.

@[email protected] @dansup @pixelfed @Gargron I use mastodon.social and I'm wondering WTF you are talking about.

Edit: This person earned a block from me. Have a feeling this is just similar to the RWs who go to bluesky and complain about getting moderated. If there's a real issue at mastodon.social then I look forward to my permaban, but I'm not seeing it so far. Anyway, since I blocked the person to whom I've replied here any actual explanation will fall on deaf ears--literally--so don't bother.

@crazyeddie @dansup @pixelfed @Gargron Yup, just block and move on. Some people will never express gratitude for anything.

@joyo @dansup @pixelfed @Gargron Oh, I guess you DO get replies to threads you've replied to that you've blocked. I thought otherwise. Nevermind. :p

I usually don't bother to say anything but I thought someone might try to explain because there were others saying similar things. I didn't want to waste their time on something I'd never read.

@dansup @pixelfed @Gargron

Totally agree. It's good to have federation, but humans seek out community. And we should work to agree that federated software shouldn't imply a decentralized community. Mastodon has managed to thrive in comparison to services like PeerTube because of a central instance.

@dansup @benroyce @pixelfed @Gargron what is the relevance of the PixelFed promotion here? It feels shoehorned in and really crassly so. Okay, you came back and built an app… so?

Gargron was happy for you and tooted about it but what's that gotta do with Mastodon.Social? Does it change the fact that the MS moderation is poor?

A pat on the back hardly is enough to make you a cheerleader. Especially given that when Gargron wanted to host his personal gallery he didn't opt for PixelFed so that pat on the back didn't really mean too much other than lip service.

Anyone with any semblance of impartiality will say that Gargron has done some good things and there's lots he could and should do better, especially in regards to safeguarding his users and supporting the wider Fediverse.

But I'm still at a loss as to how this relates to the incredibly dodgy PixelFed plug.

@sabreW4K3 @dansup @pixelfed @Gargron

dan is just saying he appreciates mastodon.social and points to his own experience as to why he appreciates it

it's just a nice statement

there's no need to go knives out on such a post 😂

god damn

@benroyce @sabreW4K3 @dansup @pixelfed @Gargron How dare he promote a non-monetized, ad-free platform, for which a good financial month means breaking even, and at all other times is probably losing money?
@sabreW4K3 @dansup @benroyce @pixelfed @Gargron "built an audience around my new project" doesn't seem like a plug to me, just a statement.
@sabreW4K3 why do you bring so much hate to someone else's friendly post, I wonder?
Pixelfed is also not an app, maybe fact checkt next time.
@dansup
@dansup @pixelfed @Gargron what is the problem with mastodon.social...? #outOfTheLoop

@alientux @dansup @pixelfed

Yeah there is some criticism that Eugen promotes mastodon.social as the default instance to the exclusion of others, leading to massive de facto centralization, but the biggest issue currently seems to be the censorship of pro-Palestinian and anti-genocide accounts, see for example:

@adamsaidsomething @dansup @pixelfed @cemedia @rzeta0 Thank you! I tried following everyone in the mentioned examples and had no issues. Hopefully this moderation fuck up has been resolved #FreePalenstine #genocide #FreePalestineNow

@alientux @dansup @pixelfed @cemedia @rzeta0

The accounts are not always banned outright but often "shadow banned", meaning you can only see they're posts and profile if you already follow them, which obviously limits the visibility and reach of these accounts, and if you visit they're profile before following them you get a message that the profiles have been hidden by mods, you know, for you're own protection...

@alientux @dansup @pixelfed @cemedia @rzeta0

And in some cases, as Tariq, Ricky, and others can attest, specific posts have been taken down, which is clearly censorship. BTW I only mentioned a couple of toots and accounts as examples but many more have experienced the same issue sadly. Its not a moderation fuck up, its intentional and systemic, otherwise users deserve apologies from the mods, transparency about what happened and why, and restoration of censored accounts and toots

@alientux @dansup @pixelfed @Gargron

we're horrible, haven't you heard? There's too many of us and we're generally clueless since we don't know how to run our own server or choose a smaller one. Or so I hear. ;^)

@dansup @pixelfed @Gargron
Cheers to this!

Although it’s not the point of a social web, having a default/general instance to join significantly lowers the barrier for non-techies to join the social web at all.

Y’all who complain might consider some empathy for good people who don’t happen to also be a dang Linux admin.

Smoothing the onboarding process is worth doing. But m.s is a great initial solution.
