Mini vMac for iOS won’t be coming to #AltStorePAL, it was just #RejectedByAppReview for notarization after an initial rejection and appeal.
You can of course still get it from https://github.com/zydeco/minivmac4ios and build it with Xcode or sideload the ipa with AltStore Classic.

@maczydeco @stroughtonsmith Am I reading this right? Apple considers devices running iOS to not be Apple-branded computers?
I’m pretty sure they have previously explicitly marketed iPads as “computers” or “PC replacements.” And I’m pretty sure they’re Apple-branded.
I’m guessing their awkwardly worded reasoning is down to the exact wording used in their macOS EULAs…
@pmdj I don’t know what the exact wording on the System 6 or 7 EULA was, the installers I’ve found online don’t have any EULA, and my physical copies are at my mum’s place in another country. I do recall there being a tear-to-accept sticker and agreement with the original floppies 🤔
@maczydeco The only reason I suspect it’s something to do with EULAs is that they haven’t come out and said “we get to decide what runs MacOS, and iOS devices are not included” but instead used this bizarre phrasing. At any rate it seems written by lawyers.
@pmdj @maczydeco Ugh. If Apple is looking for a new "Pro" app after they do whatever it is they plan to do to Pixelmator they can buy this app. I'd pay Apple $99 for a Mac emulator for the iPad. That could cover the cost of a license to MacOS. I can't think of a more Pro app than one that makes the iPad a serious computer.
OK, I know this will never happen but thanks for letting me whine and stomp my feet for a bit. 😀
@robnee @pmdj @maczydeco I would pay Apple for a mini vmac version that supports rotation (Radius Pivot emulation) and pencil (wacom emulated). But if they don't, I would pay for this in a pinch to stop compiling it
myself 😂
Turning an iPad Pro into the Ultimate Classic Macintosh  ⌘I  Get Info

I’ve started work on the next in my 1-bit Woodblocks series: “Tekagami” (Ito Shinsui’s “Hand Mirror”). So it’s a good time to talk about how I turned an iPad...

@ahe @eduo @robnee @maczydeco Yes, manually signing and installing apps via Xcode has always been possible. The code signature expires after a comparatively short time. (I think 1 year these days at least… used to be less IIRC) It’s definitely less convenient than just installing it straight off a website or via an App Store.
@pmdj @ahe @robnee @maczydeco One year if paid developer account, One week if not (hence AltStore auto-resigning mechanism being such a game changer when it came out).
@ahe @robnee @pmdj @maczydeco our life would be complete if some retired Wacom developer appeared out of nowhere and added pencil support to this 🥹
@pmdj @maczydeco the EULA for Sonoma says „Apple-branded computer running macOS Ventura, macOS Monterey, macOS Big Sur, macOS Catalina, macOS Mojave, or macOS High Sierra (“Mac Computer”) that you own or control”
Outside of that snippet, every other mention of installing the OS is only permitted on a „Mac Computer” which I guess an iPhone is not
@nrab @maczydeco This software emulates Macintosh hardware from the 80s and 90s and lets you run pre-OSX versions of MacOS. What the Sonoma EULA says is entirely irrelevant.
@nrab @pmdj What about the EULA for System 7 or older (the versions that run in Mini vMac)? It’s not shown during installation, or present on the disks I’ve seen.
@maczydeco @nrab Yeah, no idea. Maybe the Internet Archive has a copy?
@pmdj turns out the “what’s a computer” was a truly genuine question after all- even Apple has no idea!
@pmdj @maczydeco @stroughtonsmith “what’s a computer?” They never actually said the ipad is a computer, and they’re working really hard for it not to be one…
@maczydeco @stroughtonsmith Bunch of party poopers they are at Apple Inc.
@maczydeco the DMA doesn’t permit Apple to use the notarization process in this way; I hope you raise this to the EU! Apple’s been taking the DMA affordance letting them review for security and they are abusing the shit out of it and turning it into a de facto App Store review. That practice needs to stop.
@harpaa01 @maczydeco Agree 100%. And now everyone should realize why notarization was introduced in the first place. OF COURSE, it never had anything to do with security. 🤣 But people these days believe everything if they’re told often enough. Like “give me your phone number TO SECURE your account”. 😂 Ppl happily providing their number and wondering why they get scam calls, scam messages etc. But they still insist, this would increase overall security. (1/2)

@iBleedIn6Colors and the Mac has had notarization for years and it's a good feature and relatively uncontroversial because it’s a straightforward automated scan of your app binary.

Apple's attitude toward DMA compliance is just so resentful.

@harpaa01 After all, its only purpose comes to light which is establishing an app review process for so called side loading. OF COURSE it’s automated on the Mac. Why would Apple invest money here for in person reviews? What would they get from it? Nothing—as long as you’re still able to just download and run software from everywhere. As you said, it’s “uncontroversial”. This paved the way for introducing a process of that name for iOS. (1/2)
@maczydeco @stroughtonsmith Am I the only one who finds the lack of paragraphs in that reply almost as offensive as a rejection?! A story from Steve Jobs about the back of a piece of furniture (and thus the inside of a computer) comes to mind…
@maczydeco they imply that iPhones aren't "Apple branded computers", which...
@maczydeco i wonder where they draw the line. would they make the same argument when reviewing apps for macOS?

@maczydeco I 2nd the EU complaint.

Could also resubmit it as “mini vPineapple” in the meantime. A lot of anime shows use pineapple as computer models. I don’t know what legal implications that would have though.

@maczydeco "Your app necessarily involves and promotes the use of Mac operating system software on devices other than Apple-branded computers" ...umm?
