It sounds like bsky is scrambling to add capacity and so they have limited some functionality. At their scale, I am left wondering how exactly they are paying for it since I donโ€™t think they have an actual revenue stream. Perhaps I am wrong on that.
@Viss it reminds me of the saying about boats being a hole in the water that you throw money into

@jerry im willing to bet the word in that blurb doing the most heavy lifting is 'hyperfinancialize'. im fully expecting some token or coin or microtransaction bullshit to show up. they're gonna try and compete with square cash or venmo or whatever by letting people pay one another in cryptocurrency.

its possible that they wont, but the sheer fact the 'lead investor' is called blockchain capital is ... foreshadowing

@Viss great. My eyes are bleeding now.
@jerry we need a pneumatic tube system so i can ftoonk you over a burrito

@jerry @Viss

so, masto-micro-transactions when?

@Viss @jerry Thanks!
@joycebell @jerry yeesh, this reads like bsky is headed for the gallows if this guy has any say in stuff
@Viss @jerry No kidding! Or at least a crypto bailout. BTW Trump nominee for Commerce Secretary and Trump transition team guy, Howard Lutnick, has a Tether connection. https://finance.yahoo.com/news/howard-lutnick-tethers-wall-street-160342484.html

@jerry LOL. Like Twitter in 2009? ๐Ÿ˜
@jerry money from actual blockchain VCs
@jerry they do sell domain names, lol
@jerry Itโ€™s VC money. They have announced that there will be a subscription service for premium functionality.
@jerry From what I heard on NPR they were looking at adding a subscription to post higher quality video on the platform. Probably just the start of things.
@jerry howโ€™s fedi been expanding ?
@EVDHmn mainly through donations. At least that has been the case for me.
@jerry They have several rounds of funding, the most recent being at $15M.
@jerry Crunchbase says Bluesky's total funding is $36M https://www.crunchbase.com/organization/bluesky-514d

@jerry American capitalism at work! Gain users' information and then sell it to the highest bidders. The founders walk away with money while another company transforms the product using your personal data. It's called Meta...

@jerry The time before ad injection goes into hyperdrive is now much closer to ending.

Then, when they get a lick of that delicious revenue, they'll start drizzling it on every meal.

I predict they'll be almost indiscernible from twitter when it took its turn to the worst inside of 5 years, or less.

Then, they'll all rug-pull a la cryptobro 101, and act like the failures weren't of their own creation.

@jerry I caved (even though I was annoyed) and started an account strictly for my education content because I get good stuff for my professionsโ€” many teachers migrated recently ๐Ÿ˜‰. Today an Ed Tech teacher recommended we buy a domainโ€ฆ so I paid about $17 for a 1 year .com (custom domain name)โ€” auto set DNS

someone please explain the benefits past the obvious!

@jerry Live view of the VCsโ€ฆ
@jerry well, they're buying hardware instead of clouding it up, which has the advantage that in the near term that looks like one-time costs, and in the long term it means lower recurring costs. So that's handy. The staff seems pretty small, too.
@vathpela @jerry That sounds like CapEx, I thought Valley Investors preferred OpEx?

@jerry

once they get everyone comfy there, they will unleash the bad actors

@jerry VC ๐Ÿ’ฐ๐Ÿ’ฐ๐Ÿ’ฐ
@jerry I'm honestly rooting for them because I don't want their new users to return to their previous habit.
@jerry As much as I'm worried about the long-term sustainability once the VC money dries up, Bluesky is working fine. Which is impressive because they apparently entirely use their own infra, no cloud, and have servers on order to expand capacity.

@jerry

Bluesky: Such a pretty blue sky, let's paint it with ads.

@jerry securing 15m will help but I think they decided to go on prem for critical hardware so they literally have to wait for delivery in some cases
@jerry they got cryptobro moneys https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bluesky#Public_launch ctrl+f for crypto

@bison even crypto bros expect a return though
@jerry oh yes, and they are playing the long game.
like twitter before, they had 1 year? that actually made more money than they were spending?
twitter never had a working business model, its all about the payout/buyout.
we will see how this will turn out / what the scheme is
@jerry theyโ€™re vc funded by a firm called โ€œblockchain capital.โ€ i wish i was joking
@jerry Ah, yes, reproducing the old patterns of offering something "for free" to get people in and then selling their data and their attention to advertisersโ€ฆ And that's just for starters, of course.
