It seems as though there are two Americas. Trump's and Harris's

Here are some stats to help you understand the difference.

@MarkHoltom ehhh. Slicing those data by state creates some illusions…
@MarkHoltom That's a significant difference.
@MarkHoltom There ARE two Americas, never doubt it! And if "Harris' America" should ever secede from "Trump's America", the latter will be in great trouble.
@Eetschrijver @MarkHoltom it feels like such a separation would be the best thing....not just for America, but for its nervous northern neighbour as well.
@hfinyow
I sometimes have happy dreams about such an outcome.
@MarkHoltom

@hfinyow @Eetschrijver @MarkHoltom How are you going to make the separation, though? This is not North-South. This is physical fragmentation of the country.

But what is really actually DISGUSTING about the thought of separating as a "solution" is it means finally abandoning the descendants of the slaves to the Confederates. Conceding the Civil War to the Rebels, FULLY, including slavery.

@hfinyow @Eetschrijver @MarkHoltom The Emancipation Proclamation BTW freed the slaves (on paper) only in the Rebel states, if memory serves. Lincoln wouldn't have had the power to free slaves in Union or Border states. Some of those, such as Missouri and Kentucky, would be seceding this time, taking their descendants of slaves with them and reënslaving them under a Jim Crow II. And much of the rusty Midwest would secede as well, taking those who had migrated for industrial jobs.
@chemoelectric
I would, by the way, assume that everyone so inclined would travel to the "red" or the "blue" part as they were inclined.
@hfinyow @MarkHoltom
@chemoelectric
Well, I'm not making the separation, that would make itself. But Alaska's part of the USA, isn't it? It's not unheard of.
@hfinyow @MarkHoltom
@Eetschrijver @MarkHoltom
I feel obligated to point out there is no such thing as a "red state." States are arbitrary political boundaries. So-called red states contain a mixture of red and blue voters, and often the percentage point difference is not as vast as people think. The blue voters in red states are usually the most vulnerable of the population and have the least resources. Not all will agree, but I see a moral duty to not abandon these people.

@MarkHoltom You'd understand why they wanna mix things up. What other levers are there?

And they get to be at the pointy end, and pick up the fucking pieces after.

fuck

@MarkHoltom thanks for sharing! It would be interesting to compare these stats in a box and whiskers graph to see the distribution by category.

@MarkHoltom

Not sure where those states come from, but as a person living in the US and has visited a few states I can definitely say this is very consistent.

@MarkHoltom

that does tell the 'voting against your own best interests' story

@MarkHoltom yes. There is a Americal the stablishment is falling and is desesperate to find a solution. What Bernie said about the Democrat party abandoning the working class was about the party not providing solutions for these people.
Trump gained this America by exploring the resentment from the other America, that don't seems to be in such hardship. None of the parties really want to solve this America problem, and that is the deepest problem in US politics.
@MarkHoltom
That tells a story!
It's a shame that his supporters aren't capable of reading it.

@MarkHoltom
I would like to see two things;
1) the provenance of the data( this needs to become the standard for all data)
2) the plan to present the same stats over the next 4 years.

I would also like to see some stats on the concentration of wealth.

pumpkinHead started his campaign 4 years ago, we need to do the same.

@MarkHoltom great stats, do you have source? Just interested in where to get more info.

@MarkHoltom

This is interesting data, and if you could please source it, it would boost my confidence to share.

We lived in a Trump state until two weeks ago. Now we live in a Harris state. People are given misinformation about that, too -- they leave in search of work and are told it's cheaper to live in Texas or the South. But as former Texans, we were crushed by an ersatz state property state ("school" taxes are astronomical) and property insurance rates that are sky high and climbing.

@MarkHoltom

Yes, there are two Americas.

There is America, where millions are poor, and a much smaller America owned by the ultra-rich.

@MarkHoltom
That doesn't surprise me at all.
@MarkHoltom where's abortion rate?

@billseitz @MarkHoltom

How could you meaningfully measure abortion rate when many red states limit abortion to the point where red state residents who need abortions must travel to blue states to get them?

@MarkHoltom
Looks great, but what's the source?
@MarkHoltom I’ve been to 49 of 50 states, and for sure each state is a different country. And Long Island is definitely another country of its own.
@MarkHoltom and so many have no idea they voted against their own interests. It’s sad. 😔
@MarkHoltom and yet we are one country…

@MarkHoltom Thank you for sharing. Can you provide links to the sources. I'd like to share with others.

Thank you.

@MarkHoltom It seems to me that there is a bigger disparity between urban and rural areas. And not only in US - ex. Alberta Canada Smith government - a totally anti-science, rage fueling, divider and conspiratorial gov - won the elections (the same stupid system of "first around the post" voting) by taking ALL the rural areas, while it was almost wiped out from the big urban centers of Edmonton and Calgary. The same in Saskatchewan. Is there any chart to reflect that for US elections?
@MarkHoltom
Can you post a few data sources that you used? I'm a big fan of being able to refer folks to the primary sources so they can look up the data themselves. Thanks!
@MarkHoltom
Thanks for the post, but I don't believe your nerdy chart with numbers and stuff is going to persuade anyone. Willful transgression is now the American culture. THAT'S what gets the buzz and the clicks. We pride ourselves on offending and hurting others, and taking shit away from them, dontcha know?
Ironically, your chart only shows Republican policies working exactly as designed.
@MarkHoltom I recall that analyzing at a county level, Hillary had won counties representing 66% of US GDP…
@MarkHoltom It’s not so simple. Every red state has its blue city like Austin or Houston in Texas. Or Asheville or Chapel Hill North Carolina. Lawrence Kansas. Conversely every blue state has its red parts. Like New York or Colorado. This discussion is a waste of time. Put your energy into an unstoppable movement. There are more of us.

@MarkHoltom While the Harris won states are clearly doing better. And, for many reasons the others states by and large have serious problems. It’s surprising to see the states won by the great grifter are functioning as well as they are.
@MarkHoltom what's the source, please?
@MarkHoltom love the source for this so I can cite it

🧵Harris-won states perform better economically, contributing more to GDP, with higher incomes, better education levels, and longer life expectancies. They also have lower rates of poverty, crime, and chronic illness. Trump-won states, in contrast, face higher poverty, more gun

@MarkHoltom https://robertreich.substack.com/p/the-lesson Robert Reich has an interesting overview.

It doesn't seem like anyone sees all the pieces yet. But collecting them helps. Bernie Sanders had similar comments.

The Lesson

The real lesson we should draw from what occurred Tuesday

Robert Reich
@MarkHoltom I'd live in that first country, not the second.

@MarkHoltom

I suppose these data are meant to show that there are two USAs - and they do.

But it strikes me as just as significant that even the "rich" USA is doing quite poorly when compared to the rest of the industralised/Western world.

@MarkHoltom Perhaps working to fix the issues on the right will change the outcome of future elections. I am not a republican or Trump supporter of any kind.
