@ma_ui @sergiodomeyko @palin @Strandjunker I don't think that's the case. A lot of those dictatorships were installed by the US or other meddling. Look at Zapatistas in Mexico or the long democratic traditions in many latam countries. Where the tradition hasn't been broken, there's no more authoritarian leaders than in the "west" in my opinion.

@ma_ui Western EU christians liked kings and dukes, islamic areas liked sultans ... There weren't a lot of democracy, anarchy or other nontotalitarian power structures going on outside of very small tribes, for a long time. The US wild west similarly regressed and the only difference was a more central power that happened to have more power took over from the local bandits, landlords etc. Even that was not successful, probably to a degree until this day.

@cohentheblue I agree about Western Europe, the roots of caudillismo are likely in the Spanish colonization. Catholicism had a big part in the idea of a strongman sent by god to fix things. And I think that's why, in countries like Spain and Italy, too many people still like dictators such as Franco and Mussolini. Also, immigrants, especially the older ones, tend to be more conservative.

People voted for their wallets. The current administration is very unpopular due to inflation and that messaging was not a winning one.
Harris only had months to share her message, Trump has had 4 years! This is huge and should serve as a lesson to the Democrats for the future. Trumps campaign did very good at circling the wagons with Republicans, and focus on "For Trump" messaging.
Media double standard didn't help.
Finally, fear sells and Trump is a very good fear monger!

She had plans to continue prosperity and advance wealth for the middle class, but media just carried the complaints. He has no plans except to ruin it more than he ruined it last time. Media won’t ask them how they feel then. Stock mkt through the roof. Not good enough. Media yawned. The media carries the message. In this case, they lied.

Not disagreeing with you at all.
The issue we have now is that the low information voters is the majority. And they vote based on feelings, not facts.
This cycle was a feeling of:
-Not making enough (inflation and income not matching up)
-Border/immigration (people in Michigan worried about illegals, that affects the daily life about zero percent)
-Media input (biased coverage to low info voter is persuasive)
-Changing candidates last minute is not helpful.

Would not print, broadcast proven crimes by republicans if they couldn’t match it on Dem side, which meant, no one heard about it. It was a circus. It brought them advertising revenue. People working their asses off to put a roof over their heads don’t have the time to search each days events over multiple sources. The ones they have, betrayed them.

And that's the disappointing part. I was a volunteer for the Harris campaign to reach out to voters. They would complain about inflation but when I tried pointing them to the numbers that were there, they wouldn't listen. It's as if they were in a cult!

I hope the media devotes just a little coverage to this when Trump doesn’t cut energy prices by 50% as he promised. When his “concept of a plan” for health care is to allow denial of coverage for preexisting conditions and lifetime caps. Cheaper for a few, disaster for many.

At no point in its history has there been a qualified majority voting for racial equality, even post-war when business was booming and the average Joe got a piece of the cake (which is why all talk about "economic anxiety" is hogwash).
Sure, they've voted for politicians who've had progressive policies, but not by a huge margin of votes (exceptions: FDR & LBJ who won by ~25% respectively).
It's their belief system.
