Hi, everyone.

I am back from my blogging sabbatical with a new blog post.

I'm proud of this one.

Why I am setting out on a journey and inviting you along.

Why I am Setting out on a Journey and Inviting You Along - Teri Kanefield

The Impetus for a Journey In September, I visited Chile for the Chilean Independence festivities and a reunion for my husband and his siblings. I learned, among other things, that an 84-year-old in-law, who is one of the sweetest people I know, admired Augusto Pinochet. She is also a fan of Donald Trump. She worked all […]

@Teri_Kanefield

Happy to see you back here Teri! ❀️

Welcome back Teri. I’ve missed you. So much has gone by in your absence.
@Teri_Kanefield Hooooorrrraaayyyyy! You’re back!!!!
@Teri_Kanefield
Thank for that excellent piece. Mainly for the reminder that the best way to change people is to talk to them rather than at them. It won't work instantly, but even a prod can be enough. But the question for me is still whether prods are going to be enough to compensate for the hyperonliners.
(Also: the stuff about Chile is great.)
@Scurra what a lovely comment, thank you.
@Teri_Kanefield welcome back! Looking forward to over the hills and far away
@Teri_Kanefield - this is excellent, thank you!
@Teri_Kanefield
Welcome back! I've missed your posts!
@Teri_Kanefield Great to see you back, Teri!
@Teri_Kanefield Excellent post, which I shared with @czds and then we shared on FB, where many of our relatives tend to engage. Thank you for your thoughtful and informative writing
@Teri_Kanefield I love your work, Teri. Thank you for continuing to inject sanity into the rage machine.
@Teri_Kanefield Oh boy! I've missed you and your work.

@Teri_Kanefield I do have one point that I’m not sure is fair, which is that people pulling away from politics is due to (or only to) the cycle. Feels like that’s been an attitude most of my life, though as Gen X I don’t remember much before the fragmentation of the news, so could just be I’ve always lived in it. But I’ve heard people saying they’re just not that into politics as long as I can remember.

Love your level-headed approach!

@queenofnewyork @Teri_Kanefield

I have a number of whatever "youth" generation it is, these days, members in my family circle [Gen Z? Gen XX? Why?] who tune out politics in the way that Teri's piece describes. Yes, they all vote, and Democratic. But they lack inclination to learn more about the substance of the Trump debacleβ€”so they can't inform their friends.

I offer this point for what little it may be worth to your majesty. ;-)

@Gozo @Teri_Kanefield I'm not saying it doesn't happen, just that it doesn't seem to me that it's a particularly new phenomenon.
@Teri_Kanefield I am so happy to see you again. I have missed you.
@Teri_Kanefield Yay, Terri's back! πŸŽ‰
@Teri_Kanefield Welcome back to the fediverse! We missed your astute analyses…
@Teri_Kanefield Thank you for all your previous work and for this new adventure you are leading us on. Being hysterical always puts one at a disadvantage, not to mention lowering one's quality of life. You are one of the best anti-hysteria voices out there. I'm very glad you're back.

@Teri_Kanefield

Welcome back. It's been pretty quiet around here. You didn't really miss anything.

@Teri_Kanefield I've been getting this authoritarian vibe from the hard left, but I couldn't put my finger on what it was all about. This post does an excellent job of clearing a lot of that up. Welcome back!
@Teri_Kanefield So happy to see you back here and posting. Another excellent blog! You express so clearly what I see every day in the behavior of people. All the best to you as always. TY for all you do.
@Teri_Kanefield I am so glad to read you again. Thank you!
@Teri_Kanefield I hope your sabbatical was great, but thank you for tuning in and sharing your balanced perspectives again!

@Teri_Kanefield
> Democracy requires people coming together to discuss issues, and this can’t happen if misinformed shouters and tough-talking-chest-beaters dominate the conversation.

This really resonated with me. My political leanings could be seen as broadly "progressive", yet I am a moderate in my approach. Both the far-left as well as the far-right are against the "dirty C-word" which is *compromise*. But democracy can't function without it. We *have* to find common ground or be destroyed.

@Teri_Kanefield
Welcome back! 😁

I'm looking forward to reading your latest post. Adding some hashtags below to help others find it (also used for filtering)

@Teri_Kanefield

Great to see you back! Haven't finished reading, good stuff so far.

@Teri_Kanefield

Glad you're back. Let's go someplace!

@Teri_Kanefield
Welcome back, Teri! So much that I learned from you about the fear and rage machine has helped me stay sane during this election season. Thank you again.

I'm looking forward to your upcoming posts.

@Teri_Kanefield Welcome back. I've missed your voice here.
@Teri_Kanefield Excellent blog, Teri! Welcome back ❀️
@Teri_Kanefield I'm looking forward to reading your explorations!
@Teri_Kanefield Welcome back! Been missing you. ❀️

@Teri_Kanefield

So glad you're back! Excellent essay with lots to think about as usual. Oh how we've missed you here.

And I agree - I also think that Harris / Walz will win handily.

I still think that everyone needs to read your last book (A Firehose of Falsehood), and I for one am very much looking forward to your next one out early next year.

@Teri_Kanefield So great to have you back Teri. I'm looking forward more than ever to the thoughtful insights you mention in this blog!
@Teri_Kanefield β€œThe safest general characterization of the European philosophical tradition is that it consists of a series of footnotes to Plato.” Sounds great! See you in December!
@Teri_Kanefield Hi Teri, welcome back. I’m looking forward to joining you on your journey.

@Teri_Kanefield

Thank you for this post, Teri - I think your comparisons to Chile are apt and very useful. FWIW, I found you online exactly when I needed to find a voice of reason in a hysterical media world. I don't watch Maddow (or any cable news) but I have always been uneasy hanging out online with people who put soooo much stock in online pundits, who don't need to have many qualifications beyond being good communicators. So, I have appreciated the journey so far......

@Teri_Kanefield Muchas gracias. Yo me apunto al viaje.

@Teri_Kanefield Welcome back! I always appreciate and respect your perspective (even if I sometimes disagree, but I'm a disagreeable sort of person).

I'll be interested to read your footnotes from your readings!

@Teri_Kanefield Welcome back. You were missed.
@Teri_Kanefield ...Great to have you back! This is an excellent blog,post.....and I'll certainly be joining your journey with pleasure!!
@Teri_Kanefield it is so great to see you back! I just read your post, and I look forward to reading more.

@Teri_Kanefield

I read your post. Intriguing! I shall join you on this journey.

@Teri_Kanefield I'll have a good read after sleep. Glad to see you back :)
@Teri_Kanefield And yes, disabling comments on your own website saves both your time and your sanity. You have summarized historical facts that mirror current events in a way few can. I’m always grateful for you taking the time and energy to put this out there.
@Teri_Kanefield for us former philosophy majors who still have Plato on our bookshelves, what should I brush up on before 12/1?

@scott

You don't have to brush up! I plan to start with Eurythpro. From there I may go back to Antigone, then forward with the dialogues leading up to the Apology.

I am reading these works differently in light of our current politics.

I started out as a philosophy major. I didn't understand that my hearing loss made learning language through my ears difficult. I just figured out it was easier to satisfy my language requirement by translating ancient Greek which I understood to be bizarre.

@Teri_Kanefield @scott
Does a Plato/Socrates connection to Antigone exist, or is it just that play's theme that you will go back to?
