Look at somebody and know their life story in seconds.
This is why I don't have photos of myself online.

This was built with publicly available data. Imagine how much creepier it would be with all the data housed in social media servers. If you don't know about Clearview AI, take a gander.
The Secretive Company That Might End Privacy as We Know It

A little-known start-up helps law enforcement match photos of unknown people to their online images — and “might lead to a dystopian future or something,” a backer says.

@adamhotep They should make this illegal to own
@Jessica @adamhotep the real issue here are the search engines and data brokers backing all this shit. this device doesn't do anything but make a few API calls.
@privateger @adamhotep I mean you can make thermite with stuff in the kitchen cabinet
but that doesn't mean it shouldn't be illegal to carry it around in your pocket
@Jessica @adamhotep common precursors to drugs are also banned if its at all practical :D
@privateger @adamhotep I mean I don't really care about drugs tbf as long as it doesn't affect people too bad
I'm just saying the combination of tools like this could be dangerous and should be regulated if it becomes a thing.
@Jessica @adamhotep
I agree, but believe that we should legislate the backing services of this stuff instead.
Any person can slap together something like I-XRAY with like ten minutes of work, then sell subscription access in some way for creeps to effectively stalk people. This is gonna continue unless something is done about the APIs themselves.

https://pimeyes.com costs 30$/mo, with a free tier. You can find someone's life history with that. Shouldn't be a thing.
PimEyes: Face Recognition Search Engine and Reverse Image Search |

PimEyes is an advanced face recognition search engine, a reverse image search tool, and a photo search mechanism used to find which websites publish your photos online.

@privateger @adamhotep @Jessica We should file GDPR complaints. Illegal retention. Yuge fines.
@Jessica I'd rather privacy be taken more seriously. This is just a college student toy project. The data is entirely available to the public. Corporations like Meta have even more than that (search for "shadow profile").
@Jessica @adamhotep They should make it illegal to be used by governments or agencies or police departments!
@adamhotep This should be a crime if it isn't already.
@adamhotep In many European countries, the mere production, possession or import of a recording device which hides in an everyday item is illegal and can give you many years of prison. When the police confiscates it, it has to immediately kill the recording functionality.

@adamhotep The laws are from the 60's, but they got a lot of recent attention with the discussion about Amazon Echo, smart TVs, cloud-based teddy bears etc.
@adamhotep @hegedusgergely This’s scary, though girls who use FaceApp can easily hide in real life.

@adamhotep this is the future, in better times.

None of that Meta or Apple Vision Pro crap.

In other words, Apple lost its way. They should've poured their resources in AR, not VR.

@adamhotep I imagine pigs will love this for their undercovers at protests.
@adamhotep “dude” “psychopathic” … are they bragging with that quote?

@adamhotep yet people don't believe when you tell them that it's all already possible to find all this info, that it's not us being paranoid and that we know these databases exist. This is the public stuff. the stuff going on in private with backroom deals to allow cross access to databases for some businesses and governmental entities and all that shit... scary, but people will just ignore you rather than face reality.

This is a good thing to bring awareness to the common folk.

@adamhotep

That’s super creepy. I am glad it is being publicized.
