PayPal is updating their Terms of Service to automatically give merchants access to your data starting in November and they've already opted you into it.

The EU has better privacy laws than North America, so if you're there you won't even have these settings.

OPT OUT BEFORE THEY START:

Go to Settings > Data & Privacy > PayPal Shopping and toggle it to off.

UNITED STATES: You likely have an extra setting to check called "Personalized Shopping".

EU & AUSTRALIA: You won't have to worry about this because this type of behaviour is already disallowed.

@schmutzie US and nothing to be found anywhere, but my account is technically set up as a merchant.
@schmutzie CANADA: You're left absolutely defenseless just like your friends in the UNITED STATES, unlike your friends in the EU or AUSTRALIA who are protected by policies that make it harder to farm you for profit.
@schmutzie I live in Japan, but I don’t think I’ve updated my PayPal account since I moved here from Australia. Couldn’t see the option, that explains why! Thanks.
@schmutzie Thank you for making this clear! 😅
@schmutzie In Switzerland (no EU member) there is also no such toggle.
@schmutzie US: I see PayPal Shoping under "Permissions" in D&P.
@schmutzie UK doesn't seem to have one either, but I did find some other privacy stuff I hadn't toggled yet, so it was still helpful to check.

@schmutzie "Paypal shopping" and "Personalized shopping" seem to be two different, discrete options in some countries.

Is "PayPal shopping" what used to be called "Interest-based marketing" in the old interface? Found this screenshot with the explainer: "Personalized deals and offers based on your browsing and shopping activity". Is there more information if you click on "learn how it works"?

@schmutzie As I'm European, I've still got the old interface with "Interest-based marketing". This section resp. wording seems to be gone from the new interface. "Manage your cookies" is missing on some screenshots, too.

@schmutzie Moreover here's an article about the upcoming features which made it necessary to update the TOS.

PayPal to pilot new AI-powered updates, including a cash-back feature and 'Smart Receipts' | TechCrunch

PayPal announced today that it will begin piloting a few new upcoming updates to its service, some of which will leverage AI-driven personalization.

@schmutzie while the toggle you mention exists, i continued going through my settings after turning it off and found in Settings → Data & Privacy another section called "Personalized shopping" which also looks exactly like this feature and was still toggled on.
@bjc @schmutzie Yep! Turned on in two places. Damn
@bjc @schmutzie Wait, what's preventing them from always updating their terms of service and having another setting turned on ad infinitum?
@bjc @schmutzie it’s a dick move that once you toggle one off and close it they throw you out of Data Privacy and you have to go back in.
@bjc @schmutzie it's weird, I'm looking in mine and not seeing Shopping, Personalized Shopping or any variation thereof in Data & Privacy. Maybe it's not there yet for me (I'm in the USA). I'm a longtime (begrudging) PayPal user. This is such garbage. Eventually I gotta just ditch these shitheads altogether somehow.
@schmutzie I don't see this setting. Are you using an app on your phone or a desktop browser? Thanks.
@stevenray @schmutzie I have the "advertising ID" option totally disabled (on android). I wonder if that is why I don't see the second "personalised shopping" setting at all.
(in Canada)
@schmutzie
Thank you! I found some other things to disable while I was there.
@schmutzie oh effing fuck. why the hell is this gay nazi running paypal?
@schmutzie thanks! Although I can’t find the setting in my country. Where did you find that amendment? I’m hoping to tweak the URL to get one for different countries, like this url (that doesn’t have those changes yet): https://www.paypal.com/us/legalhub/privacy-full

@schmutzie They've also got one under "Personalized Shopping", starting next year -

> Starting early summer 2025, we’ll be building more personal experiences for you. You can opt in and out of sharing at any time by adjusting this setting.

@schmutzie Thank you for posting. As someone in the US, under Data & Privacy I updated settings for Paypal Shopping, Search Privacy, and Personalized Shopping.
@schmutzie this was one of the advantages of paypal

@schmutzie

On my PP (US / NA) I believe this option is listed as "Personalized Shopping" -- "PayPal Shopping" appears to be something else.

EDIT: Ah, you already fixed it :)

@schmutzie @litherland FYI, if you’re in California, North Dakota, and Vermont, this is by opt-in instead.
@soundclamp Wow, that surprises me about North Dakota (I was born in Fargo, and grew up just across the border in Northern Minnesota)—very conservative state. Good for them!
@schmutzie I rehab furniture. My rule is cash in hand or go pound sand when I sell. Because PayPal isn’t anything I deal with for multiple reasons.
@schmutzie Or better yet? Just opt out of PayPal. If a purchase *requires* PayPal I push the back button.
@schmutzie
My PayPal is listed as a business account. I haven't been able to find that option in my account info. (I'm in the USA)
@schmutzie I was all set to opt out of the latest Paypal atrocity, but then remembered I closed my account years ago. 🤪
@schmutzie thank you for this and other helpful tips!

@schmutzie

I escaped #paypal.

looking back, it's like a freaking hostage or abusive situation, getting out of it.

took **years** for them to stop bugging me -- even "automatically" reinstated my account multiple times.

dastardly pricks.

@schmutzie Paypal is one of felon45s backers, Peter Thiel. The billionaire fascist club working to turn America into a fascist hellhole.
@schmutzie yep we in EU are in this privileged. How much CCPA might look as step towards GDPR, there are fundamental differences and flaws in CCPA. While GDPR is based on OPT-IN principle, the CCPA on OPT-OUT and that’s the devils detail.
@schmutzie PayPal is banned in my country. :(
@schmutzie thank you!! Greatly appreciate this

@schmutzie I think PayPal was the first account I closed/deleted (several years ago) because of corporate shittiness.

I encourage everyone to do the same. Destroy the fuckers.

@schmutzie
In the EU here, that toggle didn't exist thankfully, although i did find a couple others that merited being turned off
@schmutzie (don’t see it here in UK, on app but) thanks for tip. We all have to stay woke to this stuff
@schmutzie @nirvdrum wow this is disgusting. thanks for the heads up!
