Have a bunch of one-time code generators in Google Authenticator and want to move them to the new Passwords app?

Google Authenticator has an export feature that’ll export 10 generators at a time to a QR code: 🍔 > Transfer accounts > Export > Next

To open that QR code in Apple Passwords on the same device, screenshot it, open it in Photos, and tap and hold on the QR code.

Passwords will then let you associate each of the generators you exported with a password you have saved.

@rmondello Thank you. If I had just one wish for a new function to be integrated into Apple Passwords, it would be the ability to upload attachments. 🙏
@rmondello Ooh, that’s nice. When I moved my auth codes out of Google Authenticator a few months ago I had to download a CLI utility from GitHub to decode them. Google doesn’t make it easy.
@rmondello I suppose it would be too much to ask an "export" function to write a list of seeds in a csv list, huh? 😜 🤷
@rmondello If only Authy supported exports...

@rmondello
this doesn't help original poster. but for generic info.

and "oathtool" in many linux systems. although oathtool uses hex as a default, not base32 like many others.

@rmondello @siracusa nice! Now if only there was a Passwords app for Apple Watch. I use the 1Password Apple Watch app all the time for 1 time passwords required for things not on Mac/iOS/iPadOS like MMOs on console etc and that super convenient.
@rmondello I’ve been curious about security implications of putting your 2FA codes in the same place as your passwords (and having them auto-fill as a result). On the face, it seems to defeat the point of using 2FA. What am I missing?
@rmondello I think the only thing missing in the Passwords UI is a countdown timer for Verification Codes in each login details page.
@francesco You’re 100% right. We missed that in the shuffle.
@rmondello hmmm... this doesn't seem to work for me. I can get to "Add Verification Codes in Passwords" but choosing the option then takes me to iOS Settings, not the Passwords app. Any tips?
@michaelseager This is a known bug, sadly, that affects some folks who took very specific actions in the past. I think you can work around it by going into Settings, General, AutoFill & Passwords, and then manually setting the Passwords app as the verification codes app. If it already is, toggle it to something else and then back.
@rmondello thanks, this worked. I also toggled the setting to “Set up codes in” to Passwords. Thanks for your help!
@rmondello @siracusa Thank you for the love you show for your work.

@rmondello there’s still no easy way to export Bitwarden into Apple Passwords right?

Will likely do “Online mode” (great name btw!)

@rmondello used this yesterday and it worked like a charm. Now the only one that doesn’t work is SendGrid 🤦🏾
@rmondello I love the Passwords app. My only wishes are some kind of tagging or folders and the ability to add attachments/notes.
@rmondello @ggete I guess it’s better than nothing, but why on earth isn’t this as simple as exporting a file into the other app?!?
