WE DID IT. My new zine “How Git Works" is out now!

You can get it here for $12: https://wizardzines.com/zines/git

How Git Works

wizard zines

to answer a couple of questions about the difference between “pdf version” and the "print + pdf version" of "How Git Works”:

- the PDF version is a PDF, which you can read on your computer or print using your home printer.
- the Print + PDF version gives you the PDF, plus a physical copy of the zine shipped to your house

None of the print copies have actually been printed yet, so those are a preorder: they’ll ship by late July.

also (as always) please email us at [email protected] if you run into any problems with the zines you buy or have any questions! I really appreciate hearing about anything that's gone wrong.
@b0rk Thanks for putting this all together in one small place! Just purchased a copy.
@b0rk p....rinted copy? We used to do that in the 90s at the magazine I contributed to. How quaint :D
@b0rk Do you know how accessible the PDF is, particularly for screen reader users?

@jscholes I'm not sure about the PDF, but How Git Works comes with an HTML transcript that we've tried to make accessible. Would love feedback on it, and I'd be very happy to give anyone a refund if they're not satisfied.

not all of the zines have an HTML transcript yet but that one does

@b0rk Oh nice! Thank you for this. Sounds perfect.
@b0rk Thanks for this details post! Was just wondering when my print ships, and all the answers are right here. Perfect!
@bjhess glad it helped! the print copies actually just arrived at the warehouse yesterday so I think they’ll start shipping soon
@b0rk You can git it here! 🤣
@b0rk already ordered, very excited to see the print version.
@b0rk omg this looks incredible AND I have no idea what git is, this is for me
@buerviper thank you! I should warn you though that the zine is not really written for people who have no idea what git is -- it assumes that you've been using Git for at least a little while and are familiar with some of the basic commands
@b0rk ah yeah, that's me still. I used a bit of git but it is like an obscure black box, so if this helps me understand it 1% better it's already worth it

@b0rk

Very happy to boost this as I'm a total beginner to Git and some things you said were really helpful in untangling it and making it less impenetrable, so thanks!

@b0rk Congrats! Random question: which is better for *you*: if I buy the PDF and print it myself, or if I buy the print+PDF version and you print and mail it to me?

$4 for not having to use up ink and figure out how to fold and staple and having it match the other physical zines I already bought seems like a good deal for *me…* 🙂

@zellyn it's the same for me, please get whichever you prefer! I price the print zines more or less at the cost of the PDF + the extra costs to print & ship & fulfill it.
@b0rk Fantastic! Awesome cover as well.
@b0rk Instant purchase 🥳
@b0rk purchased the PDF. Thanks for the hard work!

@b0rk git pull, git commit, git push.

Does not work?
rm -rf then git clone.

@b0rk
Just ordered a print copy, thanks 🙂

@b0rk Ordered!

Btw, I wasn't sure until a bit late in the process whether the "print" version meant that it was a special PDF version designed for me to print it rather than read it on a screen, or whether I was purchasing something already printed. Maybe I'm just new to purchasing magazines 🙂

@andrewrk thanks, you’re not the first person to mention that — i’ll try to make it more clear!
@andrewrk @b0rk Same here 🤔
I am not quite sure what the second option entails andnwhich one I should order if I want to print it myself.
@totoroot @andrewrk you should get the PDF version (the cheaper option) if you want to print it yourself
@b0rk @totoroot to be clear, I was pleasantly surprised that you offered an already-printed version, and intentionally ordered that one!
@b0rk I think this was the number 1 spot on the "We need a Wizard Zine about this topic" list. Congratulations!
@b0rk Bought. Please do GitHub next!

@b0rk
This is terrific! Heck, just learning about git-prompt.sh is a big help

#programming #git

@b0rk No...no... nobody knows how it works 😂 Might grab this...
@b0rk this is a triumph! I did not know it was possible to make a topic this tangled into a teaching zine this clear.
@b0rk
I so relate to the first sentence:
“If you’re still perplexed by git even though you’ve been using it for years, this zine is for you!”
@b0rk Independent media is amazing. Totally worth sharing! If my budget allowed, I’d definitely make a purchase. GitHub can be tricky for some folks, myself included!
@b0rk Purchased the moment I saw the email. Perfect timing, as I have two adult children taking their first steps into building web things as side projects. Looks great for them, but based on your blog posts I'm sure I'll be learning things too.
@b0rk Congratulations! Purchased and reading now. I laughed out loud at "the specific flavour of suffering the method causes" on Page 17.
@b0rk I didn't know git was run by Elves.
@b0rk Um, I clicked on PDF+Print for $16, and it took me to a page that says $23. Is this because I'm in Canada? I mean, no biggie, I’m going to buy anyhow, but a bit off-putting.
@timbray yeah it's because it's $16 USD, and because Shopify does something really weird around currency conversion that I honestly can't totally explain. I'll put it on my list of things to try to make clearer
@b0rk *snicker* she can explain deep git lore but not Shopify currency conversion… Um, Shopify, this feels like a problem?
@timbray @b0rk next zine topic is clear, then ;D

@timbray i finally looked it up (https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/markets/pricing/exchange-rates ) and it looks like the rules are

$16 USD
-> 21.83 CAD
-> 22.27 CAD (after 2% shopify currency conversion fee)
-> 23 CAD (after shopify rounds the price up for some reason)

I just found the setting to turn off the rounding step, which hopefully makes things clearer? Curious to know what you think.

Currency conversions and exchange rates

Understand currency conversion when accepting payment in a currency that's different from your local currency and set your rates.

Shopify Help Center
@b0rk Hmm, the problem isn't so much the amount or the algorithm but that there was nothing on my screen saying “Converted from USD to CAD” or some such. If that’d been there I (and most Canadians) would be “yeah, whatever”.
@timbray that's very fair, thanks! Will think about how to clarify.

@b0rk
Are `worktrees` mentioned, and if not, would they be in a follow-up zine?

Because I'm mystified by those and never know when to use one.

@telorand they’re not! This zine only had space for the core git features

might make a few bonus pages about topics like worktrees and post them on mastodon though

@b0rk , I couldn't find how long the wait for pre-ordered print would be? I'm looking into gift options for a couple of grads here.
@jdoe they should arrive by the end of July! it might be earlier but I prefer to make conservative estimates :)

@b0rk Do I need this? Maybe not.

Will I learn something? Almost certainly yes.

Am I going to buy it because I got to follow along in its creation and I want more of this kind of content in the world in the abstract? Because works like this are how ten-year-old me fell in love with computing in the first place, ever since David Macaulay's visual unboxing of the machines around me in the world? Because people should be able to communicate complex ideas in this way?

Absolutely yes forever this.

@b0rk can’t wait to read this!
