I'm desperately trying to get off of Twitter but the #gamedev world (particularly the indie game dev world) seems deeply entrenched there.

I'm trying to build my network of game developers on here. Please share your suggestions on who I should follow! Thank you!

#indiedev #indiegame #gaming

RIP my notifications 🤣
@prime That gamedev world will stay there as long as people keep returning to it.
@yora Yes, that is obvious.
@prime I hope to be able to say goodbye to X soon...
@owlnewworlds Yeah I COMPLETELY understand why any indie game dev still needs to be there.

@prime Hello! Owner of Lucid Silence Games here. Lots of fun game dev folks on here if you don't mind some smaller names.

@godotengine and @playdate even have official presence in the fediverse (and you can find lots of great game dev folks in their follower list!)

@louis

Dope. Thanks! Nice to meet you :)

@prime Go here and follow everyone suggested, including the guy who made the post @azrhyga https://mastodon.gamedev.place/@azrhyga/113012773402614015
Azrhyga (@azrhyga@mastodon.gamedev.place)

Gamedev Mastodon
@RinostarGames Thanks very much for the shoutout!! It is really appreciated a lot!!
@prime I'm not a gamedev myself (merely with some level/modding projects in the works), but I hang out with some people who are, mainly in an indie scene that deals in GZDoom. But they seem the type of people who acknowledge Twitter has gone to shit but aren't willing to act on it. 🤷🏻‍♀️
@Rainne I totally understand! I disconnected for months, but my job pulled me back in and I loathe it, but: a small grace is that the gamedev world on Twitter seems insular and quite kind and not prone to much of the toxicity that has consumed the rest of the platform. At least.
@prime As a marketing platform I just think the reach Twitter gives makes it too good to give up in a business sense. As much as I'm sure so many devs wanna GTFO, bills gotta get paid, sales gotta get made and fedi is... Pretty unpopular actually. Not unusable, but the userbase is much smaller.

@mdstevens0612 Agreed completely.

I know it's great to have strong principles but at the end of the day, sticking to your principles at the cost of paying your bills and struggling is not always possible. Being able to boycott anything is kind of a privilege, and for indie and solo game devs, boycotting mass market social media is very counter-productive.

But still, I want to keep talking about this so that more people consider joining activitypub-powered networks.

@mdstevens0612 @prime I've been seeing people (from other industries) say the click-through and conversions they get from twitter are now negligible, and even Mastodon manages to outperform it (along with Threads/Bsky, but those aren't as unexpected)

@Kiloku @mdstevens0612

I suspect this to be true as well; I know tweets still get "engagement" but do they result in actual plays/wishlists/sales? Hard to say.

I don't think there can be any argument that the *quality* of Twitter engagements has plummeted. It's pretty obvious that the platform is rife with bots.

@prime Just curious, if the engagement you get is questionable, what keeps you on Twitter? What benefit do you get out of it?
@chicxulub my Xbox paycheck 🤣
@prime imma suggestion @eniko who suggested a lot of people but forgot herself 8-D
@oblomov @prime well, you know, it's unseemly to cast a vote for yourself >_>
@eniko @prime so is it up to me to suggest @lisyarus or will you do it? Also does @grumpygamer count as indie?

@grumpygamer @eniko @prime @lisyarus

no offense intended! I think of you primarily as the (one of the) mind(s) behind some of the LucasFilm Games/LucasArts greatest hits, which I have trouble identifying as indie 8-D. I know it's been a long time since, it's just the image I grew up with 8-)

@oblomov @eniko @lisyarus @grumpygamer

I'm trying to network with all game devs, definitely doesn't need to be Certified™ Indie™ 😀

@prime @oblomov @eniko @lisyarus Now I'm dying to know how you become Certified™ Indie™?

@eniko @oblomov

Ah well I FOLLOWED YOU ANYWAY there 😂

@prime

Games are not my thing but will boost, good luck

@prime

@ovid and @ifixcoinops may have some suggestions. :D

@prime just a small indie game dev here, I also hate X and love my time here 👍✨

@prime Welcome! I'll suggest @terry, @eniko, @saint11, @exelotl, and @goodboyrik

I never got into #gamedev twitter, but the people here have been real kind and inspiring!

@prime I haven’t seen @PHIL_FISH mentioned yet, so… there ya go 😄
@prime hey, follow me! I'm not so active now, but working on it

@prime Shared, though more of a game composer myself.

I'm slowly in the mode of easy back into indie gamedev. The one engine I used after RPG Maker though is windows only. ;/

@lwflouisa I keep seeing more and more people using @godotengine. Might be something to look into.

And hey: composers are DEFINITELY part of game dev, a huge part! Music makes games magical!

@prime @lwflouisa @godotengine We use Godot for the RPGs we've either released or in-dev. Last was 2D, current one 3D with 2D sprites. It does the job well enough for 2D and has reasonable 3D.

For social platforms, Twitter was always insufferable, even before the change in management, so the Fediverse seemed best for first-class support (we run our own server for the company). Bluesky we have as a secondary but I don't think it will last. Twitter we have but only for name reservation. If you joined late, as we did, then it's really not worth trying to wrestle the algorithm when you have more power and less investment risk on other, slower growing platforms.
@Pyral @godotengine @prime Ah yea the only reason I still use it ( I joined here several months ago ) is Silent Manga Audition.
@Pyral @godotengine @prime What made me switch from Mastodon.social to Comics.town is an entire story on itself, but I used to mainly use Peertube and Pixelfed.
@lwflouisa @godotengine @prime comics.town, mastodon.*, it's all pretty secondary if federation is enabled, in regards to base communication. The company Fediverse presence just means we aren't limited to what another instance admin decides to allow or cuts federation from.
Comics.Town

A friendly and inclusive place for independent comic of all stripes!

Mastodon hosted on comics.town
@Pyral Ah Pleroma, I haven't used that protocol in a long time. If I ever get to where I'm hosting my own instance, I'd like to try Pleroma.
@lwflouisa in general, Elixir is promising tech and I'll likely write the company web server in it instead of PHP when I get to it.
@prime I'd keep an eye on your instance's suggested users and trending posts
@prime
I suggest following the #gamedev tag ;)
@prime I feel like the game dev scene on here would be a million percent better than on that old crust site haha. I reckon @colingourlay would know a few good accounts to follow.
@phocks @prime rather than pick out a few I follow, I entrust my recommendations to the wonderful @FediFollows ’s directory: https://fedi.directory/tag/game-development/
