🤔Anti-woke guy starts a crusade against plagiarism, not realizing that this would destroy his wife's academic reputation.

🤔Anti-woke guy starts an inquiry into Walz not going on deployment, not anticipating that this re-opens the conversation on his running mate's draft dodging and insulting gold star families and POWs.

🤔 Anti-woke guy starts an investigation into crowd sizes, not anticipating that people will point to his many empty stands.

They're genuinely surprised by equal treatment.🤷🏿‍♂️

I'm not even talking about the fact that all three attacks were bad faith. That's too obvious.

I'm talking about the failure to think even one step ahead, and realize that the next step after their feeble attack, is a knockout counterpunch.

This is like those courtroom dramas where a lawyer gets a cocky witness to slip and introduce a key piece of evidence that opens a door to a line of questioning that turns the case.

@mekkaokereke

It's almost amusing. Literally 0 comprehension of repercussions. Anti-woke seems to be the political version of "hold my beer".

@the_Effekt @mekkaokereke Consequences? That's what people without bunches of lawyers on retainer get, right?
@mekkaokereke The military service issue has extremely strong parallels to the Swift Boating from 20 years ago - remember those purple band-aids at the Republican convention? Then, as now, it was projection to compensate for their objectively weaker record of service. It's even the exact same person pushing it. And certainly no better press and information environment. So what's different? That's a serious question, though of course I do have some ideas.

@raph

1. Better media literacy. As in, the typical Dem voter now knows that the NYT, and WaPo print nonsense half the time. 🤔 Maybe more than half the time...

2. Better counter-punching strategy. "When they go low, we go high," doesn't work. That's a great way to lose. And just pointing out the hypocrisy was also a losing strategy. What Harris-Walz does is much better.

@mekkaokereke @raph 3. Their convention has already been held & they assumed the ticket would continue to be Biden/Harris. Thus, lost the national airtime to agitate on the issue. It also matters that Walz is both only the VP candidate & much more likeable than Kerry. Kerry pinned a lot of his identity at the Dem convention on his military service, while Walz emphasizes his teaching & governing.

Both very worthy candidates, but Walz has some advantages Kerry did not.

@mekkaokereke @raph
2 is big.
We progressives have figured out how to play, in an arena where the press, the TV, the radio, and the socials are all in the opponent's pocket.
It took a while.

@mekkaokereke Not exactly a courtroom drama but it immediately made me think of that scene from My Cousin Vinny where the prosecution tried to disqualify Mona Lisa Vito with the trick question. He didn't realize that when she called his bluff, he made her more credible to the jury.

If launching your attack and failing makes the opposition look better, you might want to second guess it. 🤷

My Cousin Vinny (5/5) Movie CLIP - Automotive Expert (1992) HD

YouTube
@jwill @mekkaokereke One of the best "courtroom" scenes in cinema, IMO, drama or otherwise.

@EdCates @jwill

She killed it in that role. So good!

@mekkaokereke @jwill SO very good. I just rewatched the provided clip and another one in the sidebar of her busting the case due to the tire marks.

From her tossing the prosecutor's sexist presumptions in their face to her and Vinny practically turning her testimony into campy foreplay...what a delight.

@jwill @mekkaokereke people always comment about how the scenes became a staple at law schools BUT the whole movie is a study in American vernacular and accents. had an acting teacher at HB Studio that always referred to it as a master class in East coast USA north to south accents.
@blogdiva @jwill @mekkaokereke
"My Cousin Vinny" Director Jonathan Lynn (who'd studied law at Cambridige) gave after-dinner talk ~decade ago at SF Oxford-Cambridge Boat Race Dinner. (He'd studied law at Cambridge before going into entertainment.) He was great! I was lucky to get chance to ask question about the wonderful casting for that film, he expounded with enthusiasm. If everr get a chance to hear him, take it!
@blogdiva @jwill @mekkaokereke when are we going to get the classic story of the hot shot New Mexican from Big City Albuquerque becoming the first ever public defender in small town South Dakota huh
@jwill @mekkaokereke Having a sick day so I'm watching "My Cousin Vinny," because after yesterday's discussion it was kind of a necessity.
@EdCates @jwill @mekkaokereke "If you think I'm hostile now, wait 'til you see me tonight!"
@dkbgeek @jwill @mekkaokereke I love how Fred Gwynne (Judge Haller) does such a good job of portraying being absolutely charmed by Ms. Vito without having to say a word along those lines.
@mekkaokereke I'm reminded of the Nixon defence of "when The President does it, it's not illegal!"
These freaks genuinely seem to believe that itks fine if a republican does it.
@mekkaokereke He's failing at an increasing pace

@mekkaokereke

> ...the failure to think even one step ahead...

@mekkaokereke I guess that's because they are used to getting away with unequal treatment. All three are examples of people with a lot of privilege that they refuse to acknowledge and they cast themselves as victims.
@mekkaokereke I can't decide which explanation is more plausible: that he/they are extremely not self-aware, or extremely stupid. Even William of Ockham would have a hard time...

@mekkaokereke They are used to getting their way in silence...

Meaning until now no one has opened their mouth and made them think (one/two punch) so they don't know how to do it lol 🙃

@mekkaokereke thinking ahead requires confronting the idea that one might lose. Which puts a hell of a damper on a superiority fantasy.
@mekkaokereke Did I miss something about his wife & plagiarism?
@rejinl @mekkaokereke The case he mentioned is a different anti-woke guy who got the president of Harvard fired. I forgot his name.
@EricFielding @mekkaokereke So many anti-woke guys, I lost track.
Who is Bill Ackman and why is he so mad?

The aggrieved billionaire is gunning for Harvard, Business Insider, and anyone who talks about his wife.

Vox

@stoicybele @rejinl

Yup.

I'm talking about that 3 month period when the same far-right agitator that invented the whole CRT panic, said out loud, "Now watch. I'm going to turn the whole country, including gullible liberals, against DEI!" And then he did it. By going on the attack against Black women in academia, tech, and business. And practically no one said anything about it.

https://hachyderm.io/@mekkaokereke/111622169550049574

And people like Ackman piled onto it. And the president of Harvard lost her job over it.

mekka okereke :verified: (@[email protected])

Attached: 2 images Remember when we let one far-right dude make up the whole critical race theory panic, and then reactionaries passed "anti-CRT" laws that were really anti-diversity laws, so that teachers were afraid to even teach about civil rights and the Holocaust, and then US students' knowledge of the Holocaust dropped precipitously? And it dropped the most where those anti-CRT laws were passed? Well, what if we let *the same dude* make up a whole plagiarism inquisition against the Harvard president?

Hachyderm.io
@mekkaokereke @stoicybele Ah! I thought this was about Vance (who's wife wasted no time ending her career as soon as he was picked).

@mekkaokereke

How anybody would proudly wear the anti-woke label is beyond me. Maybe they're so anti-woke that they don't comprehend how insulting that would be in reality.

@the_Effekt @mekkaokereke insults are the point. They revel in being cruel, it makes them feel big, as is the case with bullies.
@mekkaokereke Unfortunately we’re still feeling the pain from the anti woke guy’s plagiarism attacks. We lost a great Harvard president and as far as I know, he didn’t lose anything. I certainly feel like we lost that round.
@BLA @mekkaokereke Yeah, his wife lost credibility, not him. Guys like that don’t give a damn about their wives. He probably wanted to undermine her career to make sure all their fascist friends know who wears the pants in the family.

@BLA

Yup.

DEI programs still haven't recovered. Organizations used the bad faith attacks as air cover to end any program that was designed to provide equity or fair treatment to Black women.

It's always "Black women will save us!" and never "We will save Black women!"

@mekkaokereke I think the “surprised by equal treatment” is a key component of the whole movement, or whatever you’d call it. Rules are made for others, not themselves.

@queenofnewyork @mekkaokereke

makes me think of that frank wilhoit quote

"Conservatism consists of exactly one proposition, to wit: There must be in-groups whom the law protects but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect."

@queenofnewyork @mekkaokereke

AKA:

#IOKIYR = It's OK If You're Republican
#IOKIYAR = It's OK If You Are Republican

Been around for years, sigh

@mekkaokereke The anti-wokers are asleep at the wheel!

@mekkaokereke I've said it so many times, autocorrect now completes it, but...

The first rule of the GOP is that rules don't apply to the GOP.

@mekkaokereke I'm a firm believer in enforcing the #TrumpPrecedent. It's the only way they'll learn.
@mekkaokereke It's the first time the Trump campaign has *received* any sort of equal treatment. I remember the 2016 campaign, where the press put Clinton's emails under an electron microscope while publishing anything Trump said as fact.
@mekkaokereke I hear Vance once was fiercely anti-Trump. Are we *sure* he isn't still?
