I’d love to run a poll and ask how many people have actually worked on a political campaign. Not posted about it but actually worked.

But I’m not sure people would answer it honestly.

Anyway, this is my regular reminder to do more than post- please sign up to volunteer, get involved and listen to people out in the real world, encourage people to vote and tell them why you do, volunteer to be a poll worker, help people register and get to the polls.

We all have to do some real work here.

@TonyStark

I worked on the Nader 2000 campaign, for 7 days.

I worked for Nader before and after, but the campaign itself for 7 days

@serge Cool. Didn’t vote for him but hey it counts.

I’m trying to add mine up but it’s 6 in the last year so I have a ways to go.

@TonyStark Does phone banking and door knocking count?

@TonyStark Shontel Brown 2x
Sherrod Brown
Biden
Harris
Lots of local offices
Ballot measures

A lot.

@TonyStark I assume you include volunteering here, based on your examples. I’ve volunteered for numerous campaigns. I’ve not knocked on doors since the pandemic started, I’ve phone banked (texting) and done postcards instead. Texting is so much easier than calling, I highly recommend it to those who want to get their feet wet.

@tweetsjen It all counts and thank you for doing it. Texting is definitely a great start.

My daughter’s friend’s older brother (that’s awkward but accurate) tried one with my local Dems in our primaries and really liked it as a first volunteer opportunity. Thanks!

@TonyStark I have walked precincts, stuffed envelopes and driven voters to the polls, in addition to using my professional skills to help one candidate develop website copy. Campaigns are hard work, and a lot of the work is tiring and can be frustrating (though intermittently also fun).

@TonyStark
I did door knocking for the Warren campaign in LV which was a very eye-opening experience. It was women mostly who answered, and when I asked if they had decided who they were voting for, ~70% told me something akin to, "I'm not sure. My husband hasn't told me yet"

I did poll observer work in 2020 and 2022 and monitored the absentee vote counting in 2020 (where I learned how people in WitSec vote). I did poll observing in the primaries this year and will do so again in the general

@kims You’re awesome! Thanks for sharing that!

@kims Sorry about the answers there, though.

I just got a work, I don’t want to say colleague, but someone I deal with for work, to at least consider Harris. She’s very into women as leaders but has a Trumpy husband. She’s not happy with Vance and she watched clips from the NABJ snd made some comments to me. She’s also concerned about abortion rights. I know- where has she been but I start slow with them and sometimes they come along.

@kims Wow. That husband observation is just 🤯 I mean, it's also a great example of the value of getting out of our bubbles and into the real world. Tells me what we're up against. Not that I didn't know this on some level already. But 70%? Ugh. Scary how the world actually works. I see why people prefer just fighting with strangers online.

@TonyStark

@TonyStark Canvassed, cut turf, coordinated postcards, phone and text banked for Congressional and local statehouse. Collected signatures for ballot issues here in Ohio. Won’t stop. Still working locally, for Sherrod, Ohio Supreme Ct, Harris, and statehouse races
@mmynatt Oh, yes. I know you do a whole lot. Thanks, Mary!
@TonyStark i will share my story of how I came to be involved. Up until 2008, I was strictly an avid observer of politics. I frequented an old blog run by someone (sadly now deceased) who effectively cajoled, shamed and persuaded people to actually DO SOMETHING. So I did. And it was terrifying…and exhilarating. I have been volunteering ever since and even ran for local office office. I will go to AZ in Oct. to work the coordinated campaign there. It makes a difference!! 👊🌊

@amazing_tvn 👏👏👏👏👏⭐️

Love this.

@TonyStark

Long ago, I did a lot of research via a Criss-Cross directory.

It would no longer be useful these days, as most people would not answer the phone because they would suspect a spam call coming in.

@TonyStark
My first was in 6th grade, handing out fliers for a City Council Candidate. Worked on a Governor campaign for someone from my hometown. Started in earnest in about 1990 for Mike Thompson for CA State Senate, walking precincts. Worked all his campaigns. Walked for Supervisors, Council members, school board members, organized one of the first fund raisers for Dianne Feinstein for Senate. Campaigned for my successful three terms on City Council. "Come on, it'll be fun" was the motto.

@mizblueprint It actually is fun.

Thanks for doing all of that and sharing it. My first campaign was for a local representative in the 80s. First Presidential campaign was for Bill Clinton. I’ve done 30, 35 years worth of local, state and federal since, sometimes 6 to 8 at a time. More if you add school board. This year it’s Harris, state auditor, a treasurer, my state level representative, my U.S. House rep, and my U.S. Senator.

I’m also an elected committee member on my local Dems. 😅

@TonyStark I wrote postcards through Postcards to Swing States in 2020. They provided the names/addresses of people in my state, and even gave a sample of what to write to encourage people to vote. It was an easy thing to do during the first year of Covid.
@TonyStark I joined the League of Women Voters a couple of years ago when I retired and have been working with them on getting out the vote ever since. So I haven't been working for a particular campaign but I've been writing postcards, doing various chores for the local polling places, that sort of thing. I don't do door knocking simply because, in this area, there's a not inconsequential possibility I might get shot. But otherwise, I work on informing voters and getting people registered.
@isotope239 You are fantastic. Thanks so much for helping us all out and for posting that. It’s appreciated very much!

@TonyStark Aw thanks! I don't know about fantastic, but some days I'm pretty good. The League has made it super easy to get folks registered, I use a website I've mentioned in your threads before: https://www.vote411.org

It's also a good site for finding out what you can do locally, where the help is needed.

@TonyStark I’m a chief election judge. I also drive my very politically involved friend around knocking doors.
@zemsgram Thank you! That election judge is really important. Both of those are. 👏
@TonyStark Texting, postcarding, phone banking for a bunch of people since 2017. Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, Andy Kim, Sue Altman, Susan Wild, Josh Shapiro, etc etc.
@PamelaBarroway Yay! Thank you, Pamela!
@TonyStark YVW! Early this spring I also went to Trenton with a bunch of people to rally for Andy Kim's #AbolishTheLine lawsuit in the primary right before the hearing. And it was frickin COLD that day!
@TonyStark In the past couple of decades, more door knocking and phone calls than I can recount. For presidential to local candidates and causes.
@TonyStark 27 years worth of volunteering so far and I can’t even remember how many races exactly. I’d feel really weird commenting a lot if I didn’t.
@ScottSummers Yeah that one often gets me, along with people who comment on politics but don’t vote.
@TonyStark My son's high school community service credits and Senior internship were done on a Senator's campaign (that shall remain nameless but he won...😜 ) and it was very good exposure for my son who at the time wanted to major in PolSci.

@TonyStark Volunteered for Whitmer, Nessel, Obama twice (that was my first go at doing it) and every state level one I could for 16 years. Harris now. I talk to who I can. I get people to polls in my family and my neighborhood.

You gotta do the real world stuff.

@TonyStark I've done every D governor in NJ for 20 years, Andy Kim in the most recent primary, Tom Malinowski, I mean it's hard to list them all. I've also phone banked and written postcards to swing states and several special elections including the Wisconsin Supreme Court. Nothing feels better than real action. I also donate whenever I can.
@TonyStark I worked on state and federal campaigns in 2016. 2018, and 2020, but it got dangerous for me to canvass in this area, so I did I text banking, phone banking and postcards after that. Now I’m doing postcards.
@DebR Thank you, thank you, thank you, and I love postcards!
@TonyStark I started out walking and knocking doors for a better school board. Again in 2020 for President (primaries) before COVID. Helped run an online campaign for school boar during COVID. Wrote postcards & text banked. It’s all fulfilling work!
@jpanzer That’s cool. Thanks for sharing!
