Welcome to the #CrossBorderRail Mystery Trains Days Thread

Today: Berlin - Karlsruhe - Wörth/Rhein - Lauterbourg - Strasbourg - Haguenau
Tomorrow: Haguenau - Reichshoffen - Strasbourg - Offenburg - Freiburg (Breisgau) - Berlin

Crossing these borders:
Berg (Pfalz) 🇩🇪 - Lauterbourg 🇫🇷
Kehl 🇩🇪 - Krimmeri-Meinau 🇫🇷

But that's not the point of this trip... I am instead going looking for cross border trains, not checking infrastructure

Here’s today’s intro video

Why am I going to Lauterbourg and Reichshoffen?

I think DB fetched a different train out of the depot this morning as it hasn’t been cleaned

That also means reservation signs seem to be wrong (I took what looked like a free seat, but it was reserved)

Pro tip if travelling without a reservation: use Comfort Check In in DB Navigator. It won’t let you check in if a seat is actually reserved

I’m going to have to write an explainer

It’s obvious to many people what’s broken - EU wide train ticket booking doesn’t work as well as it should

But where it’s better or worse, why this is the case, why the industry alone will not fix this, and what to do about it are all poorly understood

This is WHY the Commission should act https://jonworth.eu/note-to-the-new-eu-transport-commissioner-fixing-cross-border-rail-ticketing-will-help-millions-of-europeans-and-can-secure-your-legacy/

Note to the new EU Transport Commissioner: fixing cross border rail ticketing will help millions of Europeans, and can secure your legacy - Jon Worth

Dear 2024 nominee for European Commissioner for Transport, Congratulations on your nomination. Being Transport Commissioner is a massive challenge, and an enormous privilege. As pretty much all of us living in the EU use some sort of transport every day, what you do is going to have an impact on […]

Jon Worth

And in spring I wrote a detailed and long report about European rail ticketing - that has a bunch of case studies about what needs fixing https://jonworth.eu/a-report-for-jakop-dalunde-mep-and-a-follow-up-event-about-rail-and-multimodal-ticketing-in-the-eu/

The political context has changed a bit since then, but the practical issues remain the same

A report for Jakop Dalunde MEP and a follow up event about rail and multimodal ticketing in the EU

I was commissioned by Jakop Dalunde, MEP from Miljöpartiet de gröna (Greens/EFA), to write a report about the ongoing challenges to fix multimodal and especially railway ticketing problems EU-wide. The report - entitled "Simplifying European Ticketing – A chance for a green transformation of public and multimodal transport in the

Back to today's project... going to find the cross border Régiolis trains parked up rusting

Rheinland Pfalz now only sees the new contract for operations in place from December 2027! 😡 https://www.zoepnv-sued.de/projekte/grand-est (right at the bottom)

That's a full 3 years later than planned, and means the trains will only run 8 years after being ordered, and 6 years after the first one was delivered. FFS

ZÖPNV Süd

Ok, the approval of these cross border Régiolis trains

They're notionally class Z85500, can also be known as Régiolis and Coradia Polyvalent, built by an Alstom works that got taken over by CAF

But I find no approval of them in the ERA ERATV database: https://eratv.era.europa.eu/Eratv/Search

Someone who knows this better than me - @partim maybe? - is there something I am missing to find an approval?

Or could EBA still approve these for Germany?

Damn rail reporting is full of 💩

“Das Besondere an den neuen Triebwagen: Sie verfügen über eine Mehrsystemtechnik, mit der sie elektrisch fahren und nicht elektrifizierte Teilstücke mit Dieselantrieb überbrücken können. 40 Mio. Euro hat die Entwicklung des neuen Fahrzeugtyps gekostet, welche die Projektpartner gemeinsam stemmen.”

Eh come on

Geneva has Régiolis that can do 15kV
France has dozens of electro-diesel Régiolis *for a decade*

So all these FR-DE Régiolis do is combine these two

Meanwhile my trip is going to 💩 in Frankfurt

The Riedbahn is closed for works

My train was meant to take the diversion via Darmstadt

But 💥 something has hit a bridge, part closing that line… so we’re going on the even longer detour via Worms instead

I’ll get to Lauterbourg eventually 🙂

How many sides of Mainz would you like to see?

DB: yes

Ah this is what has buggered everything up https://www.presseportal.de/blaulicht/pm/14915/5834425

A passenger was just really rude to a DB staff member here about the delay

It was a 🛻 striking a bridge! You can’t blame DB here! FFS

This Lauterbourg - Strasbourg line is infuriating. The speed is ok - it serves a lot of small towns. But most of the stations are awful and not accessible and the trains too irregular… so rail doesn’t have the modal share it deserves here! #CrossBorderRail

Today and tomorrow for #CrossBorderRail I’m using my spare Birdy

It’s in better condition than my main one, the expedition rack with Vaude bags works well, but it has hub gears and back pedal brakes - not my favourite for touring

But given it cost me just €150 I can’t complain (I added extras costing probably €80)

And damn I’m tired and annoyed

How the HELL do France and Germany manage to spend €376 million of public money on 30 #CrossBorderRail trains but LEAVE THEM SITTING AROUND - and possibly for another 3 and a half years! - rather than RUNNING THEM?

Ok. New day. Calm morning. So I’ll cycle Haguenau - Reichshoffen instead of taking the train #CrossBorderRail

Let’s see how many Régiolis I find today! 🙂

They parked the dead car in the right place! 🙂 Gundershoffen

The Régiolis hunt continues

I need to check all the pics but I think I’ve identified 7 more here in Reichshoffen

So that’s 2/3 of the 30 strong fleet I’ve located

That’s enough for my purposes now…

And here’s the current #CrossBorderRail service Strasbourg - Offenburg

Ah no. They hopped off right before departure. But this is all damned silly - there’s so much cross border traffic at Strasbourg-Kehl (by car, tram, foot, bike) you can’t check it all. This is wasting police resources for a bit of security theatre. #CrossBorderRail

Had a question about my ticket. Oh I’ll try the Reisezentrum I thought. And then reminded myself why I never go to the Reisezentrum! #CrossBorderRail

Top tip on German trains: if something is unclear with your ticket *seek out on board staff before they find you* - that way you’re being the helpful and proactive one, not being evasive or hiding

Due to a partial cancellation of a later train I wasn’t entirely sure I could take this earlier one

Find train manager, ask, explain - and now it’s all fixed

This turned out quite elegantly - approaching Frankfurt
@jon also a good way to get hired
@jon This is very true.
@jon is this not a case of "at least 20m delay at ticket's destination, Zugbindung aufgehoben"? Given that it's you, I assume it's more nuanced, but it's not occurring to me how it would be.
@JonBright because there was a replacement train, meaning i could potentially not have ended up with 20 mins of delay. But the replacement was much shorter, leaving me likely without a seat… So that was the argument!
@jon ah, the dreaded ICE 27xx. Makes sense.
@jon I hope you're at least in the right queue. That's usually my downfall when I try to negotiate a railway travel office.
@jtwcornell91 no idea. Gave up and am trying my luck on board!
@jon and that 1h will be over in ten minutes and you will not have noted. Next ticket will say 1h again!
@jon Interesting use of the present tense!
@jon, "I had a problem. I thought, I'll try the Reisezentrum. Now I have two problems."
@jon step free into single deck, but wheelchair area and toilet is in the double decker part! 🤡
@K1ngdaKa88 hmmm. So… you still need a ramp?
@jon depends on which station (Platform height) or if you want to use the Bathroom or not during your journey. 🤡
@K1ngdaKa88 Ah. So at a 55cm Platform (there are some here) you go in the double deck. But if you then try exiting at a 76cm platform station…? 🤔
@jon idk, ask @bwegtBW / DB who ordered such non thinked through trains...
@jon What’s interesting is that I have never seen any border control checks since Poland joined Schengen when traveling back and forth between Paris and eastern Poland by car. But I see them each time I do the same journey by train.
I guess for the polizei dangerous people only cross borders by train?
@nehalem501 indeed. Poor people take the train (in the minds of the police). Although tbh use any train line to Poland *except* Frankfurt (Oder) - Słubice and there are likely no checks.

@jon

I cycled across the Europabrücke in June. I wouldn't even know where they should have set up a check point.

@knud exactly. This whole situation is so absurd.
@jon Depends on his looks. People looking German enough with short hair are usually not bothered.
@giggls see the following toot.
@jon
It's like there are still hard borders in Europe with a no-mans-land stripe....
@jon Classic pain point for me. I tend to switch to the tram between Strasbourg and Kehl, that's only 1.60€ or something 😄
@johnny yes. I’d planned to cycle to Kehl for this reason. But it’s a massive thunderstorm here right now! 🙂
@jon hi! Sorry that I reply this post with this, but I was looking for info on the D-ticket. When I try to subscribe I get this. Do I need to be un Germany to do the procedure? Thanks!
@reignasi use mo.pla or hvv, not DB to buy it
@jon understandable 30 euros for a reservation for 30 mins TGV is too much... assuming it is not sold out
@jon and did I see correctly that they are only certified to run in France? No German markings on the side of the train? (Ignoring the marketing)

@jon re the bike, have you encountered any issues bringing the folding bike on any trains around Europe?

I’ll be doing an interrail later this year (UK -> France -> Spain this time) and hoping to bring my Brompton on the trains

Curious also if there are issues with folders on trains elsewhere in Europe

@fodwyer only in… Montenegro! Officially in France you’re meant to cover it - I have a Tern Carry On cover for this purpose
@jon that does not look like a two flower village 🌸 🌸
@jon "ville fleurie" but nobody brought flowers to the car grave 😥😥
@jon An oil change and some injector cleaner and it'll sail through its CT.
@jon This pure fact is infuriating, really, but it's even more infuriating knowing that nobody will take responsibilty, let alone being forced to resign due to this.
@jon Now I wonder what partially electrifying and upgrading e.g. Wörth - Strasbourg and using some standard BEMU would've cost. Especially since RLP is already going to use Akku-Flirts from 2025 on adjacent lines.
@onterof Flirt has no approval for France. So that solution would be more costly.

@jon >LEAVE THEM SITTING AROUND - and possibly for another 3 and a half years!

Wait wait. What??!!

@jon https://infodujour.fr/societe/50925-regiolis-transfrontaliers-un-projet-ferroviaire-franco-allemand This article from 2021 suggests that it is completely following the plan if the trains enter service in 2025 (which month?).
