ATP Insider: Roast My Home Screen

We judge each other's iPhone home screens Surely, we won't have strong opinions about that, or anything else on the way there…

Accidental Tech Podcast: ATP Insider: Roast My Home Screen

Three nerds discussing tech, Apple, programming, and loosely related matters.

@atpfm I haven't listened, but if this isn't enough reason to become a member, then I don't know what is!
@atpfm I learned about this topic 5 minutes before got the @overcastfm notification via @RecDiffs I can’t wait to listen!
@atpfm as I have a kids party to sit through tomorrow this is fantastic news
@atpfm And, of course, I immediately subscribed again - gj
@atpfm 15 minutes in. Love that it m is going sideways before you have started. 🤩
@ArjanBos @atpfm agreed, that’s why I pay the 7eur a month. Top quality content and banter, love it!
In what way does battery % take up more space? I kept switching back and forth in settings and the battery icon might be slightly taller but i think its just an optical illusion and the difference between a solid battery icon and a battery icon with an outline, a gap, and then a fill.
When you swipe down to control center (?) it always shows the % next to the icon, which takes up space, but that's regardless of your setting. Right now with Overcast+Airplay in the dynamic island, all I can see is a battery icon and a wifi strength icon on the right side, no room for cell signal strength, but, again, regardless of battery % on or off.
@atpfm
@atpfm Looking forward to this 😁
@atpfm I'm only 30 minutes in. It's sure not disappointing 😂
@atpfm omg I’m sure you roasted @siracusa for the Settings app. Everything looks so stressful! I do this:

@atpfm Everyone has their opinions like driving in that everyone who's driving faster than me or slower than me is an asshole, but there are 3 rules:

1. No one needs battery percentage on all the time. Low Power mode turns it on for the only time you will.
2. If a badge isn't something you are acting on today, just turn badges off.
3. Anyone concerned about getting the camera quickly should either use action button, or lock the phone and then swipe/hit the camera shortcut. Works every time.

@charlesesmith this old dog hasn’t yet committed the swipe to muscle memory. Too often trying to force press the Lock Screen camera icon results in a half-swipe that fails to open the camera. I’ve missed lots of shots this way. @atpfm
@charlesesmith @atpfm And wait for the lock and unlock animations to play before getting to the camera, or risk triggering a double-click and having to dismiss the wallet first? Not on your life! 😮
@cai @atpfm Skill issue 😉 also you have to wait for animations either way.
@atpfm Ok, ok, I’ll subscribe already! These episode titles are too good to miss
@atpfm John mentioned that he (might) have the new calendar app, which is that? 👀

App Store
@atpfm I’m sorry we (by that I mean “I” but I’m sure I speak for all of us) are going to need your desk photos
@atpfm Another reason to use the Home app instead of the Control Center controls like @caseyliss is (at least for me) there’s like a 1/10 chance the Control Center just shows a blank page for Home controls

@atpfm I'm a bit of an update addict - so quite often I'll open the App Store (via the App Library), and do this:

1) Tap the profile picture
2) Pull to refresh
3) Update all (or just the ones I want)

Much faster than searching for the app, @siracusa!

(I'll also add my home screen!

On my Mini phone, the icons are the easiest to reach.

I have one screen, which switches with Focus, which also switches to variants of the same BG.

Yes, MB is ruining the look... )

@havn @atpfm @siracusa Would add as someone who does the same thing, that a step quicker method that I use is long press on the App Store icon → Updates → Pull to refresh → Update All (or just select few)

@havn You can also use a shortcut to directly go to the App Store's Updates page.

Shortcuts

@praaanjay @havn And in iOS 18 you can put that shortcut in the Control Centre. As a compulsive updater this is the first time I’ve not had the App Store on the first Home Screen since I got my 3G!
@tim_hale @havn Dang, I didn't think of it, thanks for the tip! Here's the updated setup, way more functional and accessible! Thank you.
@havn @siracusa IIRC what John was talking about is that if a developer opts-in to incremental release — where the app is rolled out to users over the course of a week — you have to search for the app and view its details before the App Store will show you the option of an update.

@caseyliss @siracusa Yeah, I remember that was mentioned - but I thought he then said he _didn't_ refer to that..?

(BTW, does it work in a way where you can do that to force "getting on the list"? So even though you aren't picked for the update yet, you'll get it if, and only if, you search like that?)

@havn @siracusa Yes, that's exactly what I'm saying — you can jump the queue by opening the app's details in the App Store, where it'll offer you an update button, even if you didn't "earn" it yet.
@caseyliss @havn Also, if you “update all” you don’t get to pick which apps are updated first.
@siracusa @caseyliss @havn you can click in the list and get a few going individually, then tap update all.
@yertle @caseyliss @havn …after scrolling through the list to find the one you want. Going directly to the one app I care about still seems faster.

@siracusa @yertle @caseyliss "Seems" does a lot of heavy lifting in that last sentence, I think. 😛

Unrelated, another thing I like about checking updates regularly is the following: I feel like I'm getting a closer relationship to the apps I have installed. I get reminded that they exist, and can read some release notes if I want. A little blog of sorts!

But I only have _lots_ of apps - and it might be too many if you have _tons_. 🙂

@havn i like to see the release notes too, but there’s only so many variations of “bug fixes” i can take before I pull my hair out. I need people to just say bug fixes, or give real release notes. I can’t stand “our customers are so important to us that we squashed some bugs.”
@siracusa @yertle @caseyliss @havn is it just me? But automatic updates never work. If I don’t manually update every day, I end up with 85 apps to update every week or two. Set to update automatically and on WiFi and plugged in every night, yet none of my devices ever do it??
@siracusa @yertle @caseyliss @havn if you're a habitual manual updater like me, the list is always fairly short anyway. And like @havn said in another reply, scrolling the list gives me a chance to see the release notes. 99% of them I scroll past because they are generic garbage, but I like seeing the detailed ones. Sometimes it is the only way I learn about new features.

@siracusa @caseyliss @havn I dont think this is a beta thing but if tiu have a bunch of updates downloading, you can press and hold on the Home Screen icon of one and set it to a high priority.

I think this is also available during an iCloud restore of a new device.

@siracusa @caseyliss @havn yes you do. Long press on the app icon on the Home Screen and select “prioritize download”
@caseyliss @siracusa @havn jump straight to the list of pending updates across all apps by long pressing the App Store icon
@caseyliss @havn @siracusa as far as I know, opening the app details isn’t required, the update will always show up in the ‘upcoming updates’ list if you do a manual refresh.
@jeffreykuiken @havn @siracusa not 100% sure but I don’t _think_ that’s the case
@caseyliss @jeffreykuiken @havn @siracusa Definitely not the case. I always do a force refresh on that screen and have had to go looking for phased updates that I know exist.

@caseyliss @havn @siracusa

You don’t have to go to the app to jump the queue. Pulling to refresh on the update page will also pull in the apps that are on incremental release that haven’t come to you yet.

@caseyliss @havn @siracusa

I personally love that there are multiple ways to accomplish the same goal, so that everyone can take the path that works best for them.

@caseyliss @havn @siracusa manually refreshing the updates list will accomplish the same thing. It forces all apps to check for updates.
@havn @atpfm @siracusa I literally do this every morning. Maybe slightly healthier than doomscrolling social? Or at least that’s what I tell myself
@havn I am using a faster way: long press the App Store icon and immediately go to updates.
@havn @atpfm @siracusa long press App Store icon on Home Screen, tap “Updates”. Even faster 😉

@atpfm @Siracusa Towards the end, you suggested that whatever eventually replaces Twitterrific would need a beautiful icon, considering it’s an unreachable spot.

How about moving the purely functional Apple Calendar “1×1 widget” icon down there, thus freeing up a slightly more functional spot up top?

@markgrambau Not much of a looker…

(And top left is also a really hard spot for me to reach.)

Will anyone please share the runtime?

@atpfm @siracusa I felt the same issue as you, missing out updates or interesting release notes.

App Store

@atpfm My Home Screen doesn’t have any apps, technically (other than in the Dock). I have nothing but widgets.

On the subject of memorialised apps, Apollo is still on my second screen (my first screen of apps).

@RobHoward 1) I count eight apps, plus four in the dock, right? 🤨
2) WHAT IN THE EVER-LIVING FUCK IS THE POINT OF EMAIL IN YOUR LIFE
3) You should really remove the badge since it's clearly useless

@caseyliss 1) The eight apps in the middle are actually the Siri Suggestions widget. I find it generally does a good job of surfacing regularly used apps at the time I normally use them.

2) I’ve been meaning to get round to sorting my emails but it’s never top of my list. I do skim my inbox daily for new emails so I rarely miss any I want to see, but I can see the argument that improvements could be made.

3) The badge is very useful for sharing in screenshots to get a reaction from people, even on occasions like this where that wasn’t my intention, but I’m blind to it and kinda forgot about it when taking the screenshot 😬
