Rivian R2 wishes as an R1 owner

After 7 years with a Tesla Model 3, we picked up a gen 2 Rivian R1S in April of 2025. We still have the Model 3 as a second vehicle, but it’s been really cool experiencing a new electric vehicle from a very passionate new company. 2026 is a really exciting time for Rivian, as in the first half of this year they’re launching their R2 vehicle - a smaller, less expensive SUV offering that should have a lot more mass-market appeal.

After 15 months of hard work, my dad has finished this impressive model of Minas Tirith! It is 1.4 m high and entirely hand-made out of wood. One of the most time-consuming parts was manually engraving the bricks on all walls and buildings, but this was key to properly convey the huge size of the city. I suspect that current unemployment numbers are missing something. The numbers don't seem to reflect the reality I'm seeing on here or on LinkedIn. The number of people looking is higher than I've seen in my career, but the official numbers aren't that bad (4.6% in the US). So let's run a little unscientific experiment.

“Apple would never have a screen in a screen”, says the CEO of Rivian… yet just a year ago, iPhone Mirroring – which puts your iPhone screen inside your Mac screen – was a major new feature of Mac OS. And widely liked too, for a reason: sometimes the thing you want just happens to be on your phone. No matter how much car companies want to trick themselves into thinking they can build in the apps and services to cater for *all* their customers, they simply can’t.
