How about governments?
The Government of Canada has hundreds of official accounts there, and none that I know of here.
The reply to an official petition to Parliament was "meh".
@EricLawton @dangillmor @kataclyst you have a good point. I questioned myself these days why several politicians also don't leave this platform:
It's pretty clear that the acquisition of Twitter was intended to segregate progressive movements and bring the far right together on the platform. What I can't understand is why some decent people continue to use the platform. Also, why some politicians or people with some influence on the platform haven't migrated elsewhere, which could probably isolate the platform mostly with the far right and weaken its objective. I think it's too late and the probable victory of Trump will be a disaster for the whole world. Perhaps in the future I'll have an answer to my question. Here you can read the full NY Times article about the X owner's (now) open political bias in favour of the far right from the previous boost https://archive.is/SMkUm #x #twitter #musk #trump #farright #politics #left #disinformation
@dangillmor The crumbling of the fourth estate is a sight to behold. A profession with such a bold, uncompromising history throwing away all of their dignity and responsibility to the people of this country and the world is something I never thought I'd witness, and I very much wish I didn't have to.
There are no principles, no ethics, no self respect, just an unending pursuit of money that's going to lead them right off a cliff. And they will jump into that chasm with a remarkably naive glee.
I don't think they're listening to you. Meanwhile, unsurprisingly, "Black Twitter" is alive and well and has Joe Biden's back. They're calling bullshit on this attempt to gaslight Joe Biden and the Democratic Party.
Where is the shoe-leather journalism that is digging into who these "donors" are that a pressuring Senators and Congressmen to attack Biden publicly? I've seen some posts about that on Twitter but no confirmation from regular news sources.
I'm not leaving Twitter - my #WNBA people are all there. Yeah, Musk''s a fascist. But Chennedy Carter and DeWanna Bonner are not.
@dangillmor I use Threads, Mastodon, Bluesky, LinkedIn and X-Twitter for my astronomy posts.
Sadly I still get the biggest response on X-Twitter. Mastodon has been slowly rising but is still far behind. Why I can only speculate.
The question is whether the big response to your tweets justifies your working unpaid for someone who is trying to get Trump elected and pull down democracy in the US. I had 60,000 followers on Twitter, but when Musk took over I left instantly - because I knew he'd make it into what it is today: an authoritarian propaganda outlet. Mastodon is growing slowly because few people care about this, or notice their own role in this.
Respectfully, you should follow a lot more people if you want to get a big response. If you are a journalist at least like 1000 people.
The authentic engagement you will get here will blow everything else out of the water. But you do need to keep adding people and growing your account in a way that we have seem to have forgotten about in all those years in those walled gardens.
@kevinjardine I see you're also not using hashtags. And have you got full text search enabled on your profile?
Unlike all the other networks you mentioned, there is no algorithm on Mastodon. That means the only people who see your posts will be your followers who are lucky enough to be looking at Mastodon when you post them (or any of their followers who are lucky enough to be looking at Mastodon when they boost them), or those who explicitly search for hashtags and keywords that you use.
Much like early Twitter, this means using hashtags liberally, scheduling posts for when your followers are online (you can do this with third-party clients), and perhaps sharing the same post multiple times per day to catch people in different time zones.
The platform isn't going to do it for you. And that's exactly the main reason why so many people like it here! :-)
@futurebird I recently followed many more people after interactions on a post of mine (still not close to 1000). Now I don't have nearly enough time to keep up with the content in my feed.
I've loved being able to see everything from the people that I follow. Should I just give that up? Do you worry about missing important posts from people you enjoy engaging with?
I think everyone misses some posts, the really neat stuff has a way of coming back.
@OffTheBooks @futurebird Mastodon has a few tools to help with that. You can put people in lists, and enable removing their posts from your timeline to enjoy when you want to dip in.
You can hit the bell on a profile page and you'll get a notification for every post.
And you can mute an account with a time limit, If they're hitting your timeline too much right now due to some event.
Let's be real that feature is for #monsterdon when you aren't watching the movie.
@hendric @OffTheBooks @futurebird
Absolutely gold-star level tips. Mastodon has so many Easter egg abilities.
I know @FediTips offers great tips and insights too.
There are many astronomy accounts on here, I've listed some nice ones at:
https://fedi.directory/tag/astronomy/
This isn't a complete list in any way, but hopefully it helps in building more connections as they tend to recommend even more accounts.
Why can't journalists realize they are one of the major forces that keeps other people over there?
If you need to observe what's going on make a non-identified account forget about follower count and just take screenshots and post them in your paper, on here and elsewhere.
You don't need to add your voice and intelligence and value to the conversation there (and become a part of the attraction) to report on what is happening.
I went to berniesanders dot com just to check. Social media: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Youtube.
The journalists can't leave, that's where all the politicians are. The politicians can't leave, that's where all the journalists are. Maybe this latest news will shock a few more into coming to their senses, but it's hardly the first time people on the outside would expect the X cult to lose its grip on the masses. It's a difficult one to get people out of.
