This is like a bully sitting on your chest controlling your arms going ‘don't punch your face!’. You preinstall Apple Music on a billion+ devices, undercut your competitors on a subsidized price they can never match, boost yourself with illegal anticompetitive features and entitlements and systemwide ad spots, regularly stall them from submitting updates, and then complain they don't innovate enough??

I'm seriously about ready for this company to burn to the ground

Apple Music is so 'innovative' that I had to nuke my 20 year old hand-curated library of a hundred+ thousand songs because of the catastrophic, unfixable mess the software made of it. I'm now living off a single tiny playlist

@stroughtonsmith A few years ago I had to reimport my (at the time) 70,000+ song library back into the Music App because it had corrupted my Library. It wasn’t until I had everything back that I remembered I had iTunes Match still setup, and then all of the music was gone on all of my devices and then the slow “churn” of indexing and uploading took roughly a week! Ugh!
@stroughtonsmith perilously close to exercising this option here as well. It has been so thoroughly messed up.

@stroughtonsmith I highly recommend Tidal.

I keep trying to give Apple Music a chance, since it’s integrated in my HomePods, it’s bundled in Apple One, etc. but Tidal is just better.

@stroughtonsmith or if you want to use your own music.. Plex with Plexamp. I use this for my legacy library and Tidal for music discovery. Plex also integrates with Tidal so you can get the best of both worlds.
@stroughtonsmith Apple Music is so innovative that *they* nuked my entire music library, lost forever, when I wanted to change my credit card after living in a new country for 3 years.
@joshhunt @stroughtonsmith It's unbelievable that iCloud and iTunes accounts are still region locked, and you can’t just change your address and keep all your purchased content. I've moved countries 3 times now, and I've had to create a new account every time, so that I can keep my previous purchases, in order to use a new credit card and billing address.
@stroughtonsmith It's so bad and it never seems to get better. Even playing songs from Apple Music is slow and unreliable. I've been seriously considering trying Spotify.
@stroughtonsmith I've migrated to Doppler by @edwellbrook last year and I'm super happy ever since. Apple has ruined Music. Songs were unavailable on my phone, artwork removed, albums split for unknown reasons. And I was using solely iTunes Match.
@stroughtonsmith yeah, like despite all of this Apple Music would be something innovative… Has it even changed a bit in the latest 5-8 years?
@gklka @stroughtonsmith I guess Dolby Atmos support, but even that idea is taken from Tidal 😅
@stroughtonsmith Barring a massive leadership shakeup, it feels hopeless for an Apple course correction. They are so far up their own "rear end" that they can't even see daylight anymore.

@stroughtonsmith I'm frankly amazed that it took so long for some kind of antitrust to take notice.

Apple charging 30% for their direct competitors (music streaming and the other stuff on iTunes/books/etc) is so egregious.

@stroughtonsmith Won’t dispute that Apple has been problematic, but Spotify also isn’t exactly the paragon of customer choice that they like to position themselves as. They proved that years ago when they pulled the plug on officially supported third party clients for paying users, as well as with pushing the Spotify Connect ecosystem and not offering a way to turn off the extraneous bits (podcasts, etc) in their app.

Maybe it’s just time to give up on streaming and go back to local libraries.

@stroughtonsmith At least Apple Music pays artists more than Spotify afaik. Spotify doesn’t even pay some artists at all apparently, so whatever punishment they get is well-deserved imo even that not being apples intention.
@stroughtonsmith @9to5Mac Will happily keep paying the service that pays actual artists more.

@Noelwalling @stroughtonsmith @9to5Mac Bandcamp + regular iTunes purchases for those who are not on Bandcamp

I'm still with my huge mp3 folder after all this years. No trust in streaming services and they also miss lots of rare music (like Japanese Touhou circles)

@stroughtonsmith @9to5Mac Ha, all companies do “burn to the ground” eventually, though some like IBM keep coming back in new forms. But don’t worry about what they say, they don’t have to be nice to competitors, just work with them 🙂
@stroughtonsmith yeah Spotify doesn’t innovate like Apple Music that’s introducing amazing new features like … *checks notes* … a queue that finally works sensibly in iOS 18. 🤣
@stroughtonsmith Are we forgetting that Spotify is still available on android, and holds majority market share? When you consider that Spotify is refusing to release an app for the Vision Pro, it makes sense for Apple to have their own music streaming service and not be wholly reliant on a third party for such a critical piece of infrastructure (think maps saga). Spotify has only their own unsustainable business model to blame.

@stroughtonsmith Kind of confused by this take because Spotify is still much more popular, despite the higher price and despite not being pre-installed. They’re winning on product for many folks. As for Apple, if you create and maintain the entire platform it’s perfectly reasonable that you get to pre-install your own apps. The EU’s awful choice screens for the browser are downright user hostile.

All this said, I do agree that Apple has gone too far, especially with the Settings ads

@stroughtonsmith Wasn't the last big Apple Music app update basically just ripping off Spotify features like the video and motion background stuff?
