@kim_harding Holy shit. That tree has been deleted.
@scy The power of the thunderbolt
@kim_harding wtf, lucky footage. 👏
@kim_harding this is litteraly incredible 🤯

@kim_harding

That was a huge bolt to explode the entire tree. Usually, when trees are hit by lightning, it results in bark being blown off.

In this case, it was the tallest point, which did not help.

@kim_harding decimating (traditionally) meant destroying 10%. That tree looks like it was centimated! 😅
@soviut @kim_harding centimated would be only 1%. That tree was mated.
@soviut @kim_harding @poleguy I've heard of animals that die after mating – who knew that the same could happen to trees!
@poleguy @soviut @kim_harding the branches looked pretty intact, maybe hemidemimated.

@kim_harding

I think "decimating" grossly understates the results. More like "disassembling with extreme prejudice."

@kim_harding I'm not trying to say this is suspect or anything so please don't take it that way, but I'm curious...why was this particular tree being filmed like this when it happened? Was this just a zoom cut of a larger scene?
@kim_harding I guess when it's your time to go, the universe will let you know
@kim_harding fuck me.
just think about how those things hit approximately 240,000 people annually.
@kim_harding A good reason not to shelter under a tree!
@daniele_Hesse @kim_harding probably less unsafe than 5 m off or so, where that branch struck down…
Bolt of lightning obliterates massive tree in 'incredible footage'

The extreme weather event, showcasing the raw power of an electrical storm, occurred Saturday in western France.

For The Win
@kim_harding
Very very frightening
@kim_harding that should be reason enough for birds to invade some country.
@kim_harding
Incredible! It's almost hard to believe that this is even real. And the fact that a boost from @sybren (Blender #b3d developer (animation & rigging)) brought me here makes it even harder. ;-)

@kim_harding oh fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu

so this is why they say to stay indoors during a thunderstorm…

@kim_harding The most frightening thing about this is that whoever was filming was at a vantage point HIGHER than the top of the tree!
@mike It was filmed from a webcam on a building further up the valley

@kim_harding

My gods, I hope everyone nearby was alright.

We had a large oak hit when we lived in Florida. It was about 20' from our home, and it blasted sod up 15' into the air. Killed the tree, but luckily not too much other damage, and nothing so dramatic.
