To teach kids about democracy, I let them vote on dinner.

They picked pizza.

So I made bangers and mash because they don’t live in a swing state.

@dgar well you see the Pizza Party primary was quite crowded... the carnivore vote split between meat lover's and pepperoni... somehow, the consensus candidate that emerged was Hawaiian. Yes, arguably better than bangers & mash, in principle, but would Hawaiian pizza get you out to vote? Simply unelectable...
@dgar Who has the ownership of the means of pizza production gets to decide whether they want to make pizza or not. Good lesson! I anticipate kids to get organised and seize the means of pizza production eventually, now that they know how democracy works.
@cwtshycwtsh @dgar also you no longer have to cook dinner. Amazing all round.
@dgar Teach them about taxes next!
@dgar They'll break into your bedroom on Jan 6.

@dgar

But local elections are where your vote *does* matter, and it doesn’t get more local than that.

@dgar

aussies making fun of the pathetic archaic american voting system. i'm over here jealous as hell! we need ranked choice voting (what you weirdos call preferential voting) and even your educational outreach laughs at us (0:33) 😭

Honest Government Ad | Preferential Voting

YouTube
@benroyce
Honest Government Ads are excellent, and blunt as hell. 😂

@benroyce @dgar don't get too jealous, some people are trying to switch it to FPtP.

Some state and local elections changed / broke it so it's effectively FPtP and we have loads of other uniquely Aussie stupidity going on 😃

@benroyce @craige
Australia is shit in its own special ways.
@benroyce @dgar States are alotted presidential electors according to population. 48 states* then antidemocratically award ALL their electors to the candidate who wins the state, thereby disenfrancising all who didn’t vote for the winner. If all states split their electors according to state vote totals (*like ME & NE do) then the Electoral College would always match the popular vote AND no one state could reasonably throw the election (which was the ECs purpose) Its a simple fix really.

@opethminded @dgar

the EC was put in place by the founding fathers because they had a fear the populace would elect a demagogue, and the EC they thought could filter that out

ironically, the EC gave us a demagogue in trump. so the EC didn't even work as intended, and created the problem instead of preventing it

#electoralcollege

@benroyce @dgar If states awarded their electors as stated, Gore/Hillary win easily. There never woulda been tRump. I’ve run the vote totals myself. The founders left it up to the states how to award their electors. All but two phucked it up. The problem will never get fixed until people accept whats wrong and demand it. Or you can scream “Abolish the EC” as has been done every election since Abe to no effect. Rs hold the state majority and would control any Amendment if it did go forward anyway
@dgar you're not in a swing seat but you are, I suspect like me, in a One Nation seat - what would be the appropriate meal for that?
@craige my federal member is LNP.
@dgar I was talking State 😃
@craige Labour guy. Butcher.
@craige so… cheap imitation potato?
@dgar I'll have to come up with a one nation meal myself then 🤣
@dgar Try doing it the Irish way, Proportional Representation with a Single Transferable Vote: Vote No 1, 2, 3, etc in the order of your choice
Shepherd's pie
Pizza
Couscous
Stir fry
Fish soup
Steak & chips
Depending on the vote, the first preferences may win, if half of the quota (number of voters) votes No 1 for the same thing; otherwise we're down to counting the second preferences, etc, then to eliminating those with insufficient votes…

@dgar I hate how real this is 😂

@dgar teach them about proportional representation next

Mashed potato pizza

@dgar
Congrats! You have mastered the concept of the Electoral College. 😁
