NEWSFLASH: Surge of #farright, #proRussian parties in #EU parliament
Parties which often express pro-Russian narratives and oppose #Ukraine aid gained last night as voters returned their verdicts, winning approximately 150 of 720 seats in the parliament.
NEED TO KNOW:
1. The European parliament is still likely to be headed by a pro-Ukrainian party, the European People’s Party. The EPP is led by Ursula von der Leyen, who has supported Ukraine by visiting Zelenskyy here in Kyiv several times.
2. Beaten by the far-right in France, France’s Macron has called snap elections, putting French support for Ukraine at risk.
3. The results make the path to further Ukraine aid more complicated, and show that support for nationalist, far-right, or pro-Russian views is growing.
Below, we break down the results in 6 countries:
#lepen far-right #NationalRally party, now led by #jordanbardella won a landslide victory, garnering more than a 1/3 of the vote. The #French president's party came in second with 15 percent of the total vote.
GERMANY:
#Germany has the most votes in the European Parliament: 96 out of 720 seats, making it a critical voice on Ukraine aid.
The far-right #AfD party in Germany came in second with a record 16 % of the vote, winning 15 seats in the #europeanparliament
This year's #Europeanelections in Italy were won by the far-right Brothers of Italy, which is the party of Prime Minister Giorgia #Meloni. It gained 28,7% of the vote. In the 2019 elections, the party won only 6% of the vote, barely passing the electoral threshold.
Although #orbans ruling #farright #FIDESZ party won, it ended up with the worst result in its history of participating in European parliamentary elections, with only about 44.6% of the votes.
The opposition 'Respect and Freedom' (TISZA), led by #petermagyar won 29.7%.
Austria is known for its neutral stance in the #RussiaUkraine war and its refusal to provide military aid to #ukraine as Austrian Prime Minister Karl Neghammer has regularly emphasized.
