LOL, it just gets better and better with Adobe. This is late-stage enshittification.

They've apparently run out of "AI" training data and now want access to every user's personal data for their AI.

If you don't accept the new TOS, you can't even get support or uninstall the software.

Adobe can go f**k itself. There are alternatives. I've switched to Affinity + other software - yes, it can be tricky. But better than continuing to use Adobe.

Change to Adobe terms & conditions outrages many professionals - 9to5Mac

Update: Adobe has now clarified the meaning and intent. A change to Adobe terms & conditions for apps like Photoshop...

9to5Mac

@naturesketchbook I have no idea what you expected when they switched to a subscription model. This is vendor lock in at its best. Once they got you they can do whatever they want, see Broadcom -> VMware. Switching to an alternate product usually comes with drawbacks which most of the users avoid by surrendering to their terms.

But at least another one finally woke up. Congratulations.

@naturesketchbook I did an edtech session with it and was even going to try it out but it was too ... Adobe. I bailed.
@naturesketchbook Adobe learned from their earlier experience surviving foisting Creative Cloud on everyone (remember that interview where the CEO was like 'creative cloud creative cloud' in response to every question?). They learned from Reddit thriving after killing Apollo and other apps. They learned from Twitter surviving everything Musk did to it. They learned from Netflix thriving after the password sharing crackdown "scandal." This will continue until *we* change our behavior.
@naturesketchbook @lisamelton Can anyone recommend some Affinity classes so I can learn that and dump Adobe?

@naturesketchbook Just to make this sure: are we talking about the TOS from Feb 17, accessible at https://www.adobe.com/legal/terms.html#content?

Why is this a problem now and not in February?

Also, at https://helpx.adobe.com/manage-account/using/machine-learning-faq.html there is (as of now) given a way to opt out of at least some analytics.

Of course, this still is a no go, both privately and in business. Let this be another(?) giant falling because of their enshittification.

Legal

Adobe Legal Terms

@jesterchen @naturesketchbook It is a problem now because nobody bothered to read the changes to the TOS in February but now you have to press a button on a dialog box that tells you about changes to the TOS.

IMHO the culprit is that you have to opt-out of using your data for machine learning. This should be opt-in according to GDPR principles.

The rest is the usual legal gobbledygook in order to provide cloud services.

@naturesketchbook gimp is also an option. Free, multi-platform.
@Miro_Collas Yes, Gimp can be an alternative for some, I tried it and tried to like it, but couldnā€˜t use it for what I need. And I donā€˜t like to recommend software that I donā€˜t personally use.
@naturesketchbook That's perfectly reasonable. It doesn't sit everyone, no. But it would for a many people who currently use PS and want alternatives.
@naturesketchbook I was planning to go back to GIMP but would love to hear thoughts on Affinity

@StevenSavage I find Affinity Photo works well for what I do (mostly photo editing and image/text design) and the software is stable and works intuitively (shortcuts, UI). I’m also really positively surprised by their Publisher software (DTP, Indesign alternative) and use it regularly for designing PDFs. Now we all just hope that Canva wonā€˜t turn Affinity into a subscription.

I tried GIMP, and wanted to like it, but I find the UI is really a gamestopper, itā€˜s just not usable for me.

@naturesketchbook @StevenSavage

I use Affinity as well and also concerned that Canva will make it subscription.

@MichaelBishop @naturesketchbook ironic note. A huge amount of my books covers were made by gimp.
@naturesketchbook Surely there's a way to get a program off a computer without going through the official uninstall process. I don't know what it is, but I feel sure there would be a way.
> proprietary software mistreats me
> i've switched to another proprietary software

Seriously though, @naturesketchbook, I'm glad you found something better that worked for you, but please refrain from advertising something that will certainly also be enshittified.
@naturesketchbook @NickSchwanck ā€œlate-stage enshittificationā€ implies that we're near the end. This is only the beginning.
@naturesketchbook my relationship status with Affinity Photo is still a bit complicated, but I'm in LOVE with Affinity Designer for years now. Best tool I've ever used! A pleasure to work with. No subscription, no bullshit. Yet. Just great features
@naturesketchbook Iā€˜ve worked for automotive companies as an ArtDirector. I needed special clearance for doing so, because I had to work on secret stuff which was not meant going public before market launch. Adobes behaviour just doesn’t fit for a professionell Environment. Hopefully they get doomed
@RickConfident I agree. It's a horrible move considering this software is the market leader for use in professional settings.
I wouldn't want to explain to clients that their super-confidential project is now leaked to Adobe servers.
@naturesketchbook Well, this is irritating and I really resent paying them just to get out of the contract because they misbehaved.
@naturesketchbook have you tried Inkscape recently? It's my favorite vector drawing program.
@jurgentje I don't do much vector drawing these days, but I found Inkscape's UI very confusing and not intuitive enough. But I keep it around.
@naturesketchbook have you tried Krita for drawing? It's my daughter's favorite, especially in combination with our Huion tablet
@naturesketchbook
I wouldn't defend Adobe, but the posting is somewhat ironic as it directs me to one of those wonderful data-scraping publications where I don't get the option just to "Reject All" but have to scroll my way through oodles of 'justifiable interest' sections switching each one off manually.
So thanks for the post; it might have been interesting, but I chose not to read it.
