2 weeks after BSidesSF/RSA & I still don’t have my voice back. Tell me all your voice recovery tips! So far I’ve tried:

* hydration (esp throat coat tea)
* humidifier
* cough drops without menthol (Luden’s)
* 48 hours of near-total vocal rest
* ibuprofen
* gargling salt water

Anything I missed?

2 weeks later, greetings from the ER 👋

Still don’t have my voice back, and now I’m having shortness of breath, so that’s a “do not pass go, go immediately to the ER” kinda moment, sadly.

I packed snacks, though it’s actually not too busy this morning, mercifully…

@leigh hope things improve quickly!
@leigh Oh no! Sounds like some sort of infection that has spread to your lungs. I hope they get you sorted quickly 🫂

@wendynather it turns out “chest pain and shortness of breath” is the unlock code to get seen quickly even in our overburdened ERs… small mercies…

But yeah I’ve been worried about “walking pneumonia” for a while now 😓

@leigh @wendynather ughhhh it’s the worst cheat code though :( I hope you recover soon.
@thatandromeda @wendynather thanks ❤️ ECG seems like it was clear! So now I just wait probably 5 hours to get seen…
@leigh I know that feeling, more recently than I’d like to admit. Glad you’re getting checked out! I hope it passes soon.
@leigh yikes! That sounds deeply unfun. Hope you recover fast!

@leigh @wendynather Years ago, I walked around with walking pneumonia (unknowingly) for far too long before someone with more sense than me told me to take some sick leave and get it seen to. Thankfully the antibiotics worked quickly.

I hope whatever you have is resolved quickly 🤞

Bleeding from the ears also gets immediate attention in Emerg. Follow me for more hot tips!

@leigh Yikes! Best wishes!
@leigh oh no! hopefully you can recover your voice soon and the wait isn’t too bad.
@leigh that's not good, I am glad you are being seen and hoping you have a quick recovery 💐
@leigh good luck! <3 hope it's not too serious and you get a quick recovery
@leigh Oh jeez, Leigh 💜💜💜 I’m so glad you’re getting good care.

@leigh <waves away clouds of gloom>

… what snacks did you bring?

@leigh oh jeez - best wishes and thoughts from afar, Leigh
@leigh Noooo… Hope they have the fix!
@leigh oh no Leigh I’m so sorry — wishing you a fast-as-possible recovery
@leigh Gah, had no idea you're dealing with this! Glad you're in the right place for help, hope they can figure out whatever's going on quickly!
@leigh good luck Leigh! Pulling for you!
@leigh noooooooes 😥 hope you're taken care of quickly and back to feeling better soon!
@leigh yikes! I hope they find that it's something easy to treat, and you feel better soon...
@leigh wishing you a speedy recovery!!!
@leigh ooof this sucks and I'm thinking good thoughts for you.
@leigh Hope you’re improving. Was thinking about you and this post this morning.
@leigh nuebulizer + saline solution
Aloe drink + honey - room temp.
Everything else is good on your list.
@leigh Lost my voice when I was at university and living on the cheap. One evening, I made a sandwich containing only raw onion and Miracle Whip® . First bite of the sandwich, and my throat loosened up. Probably the onion that did it, and probably a one-off, but it worked. (This is how ridiculous “folk medicine cures” begin.)
@jdeisenberg haha that is amazingly disgusting and I love it
@jdeisenberg @leigh this sounds like muscle tension dysphonia, which raises an interesting point: it's really important to figure out if your problem is in the larynx or just near it

@leigh Not sure if it helps to get your voice back*, but ginger tea** with honey, and (optional) mint is great for a sore throat.
If it doesn’t help, at least it tastes great.

* Never payed attention to voice recovery
** Use fresh ginger, cut into thin stripes

@leigh Can I be nosy and ask what kind of no-voice ailment this is? Do you sound raspy when you try to talk? Do you end up in a coughing fit? Something else?
@ruthan hey sorry for the late follow up! I’ve been a mess. I can talk for a couple mins and then my voice gets weaker and creakier 😢 sometimes there’s coughing, sometimes not. Curious if you have any thoughts!

@leigh Once the shortness of breath gets squared away (yikes and godspeed!) it might be helpful to try a bit of humming:

1. take a few of whatever kind of breaths you take to relax
2. inhale with a breath that pushes your belly button out (does not have to be huge! can actually be quite small)
3. retaining as much breath as possible (keeping belly button out), gently hum a few sirens. no need to get carried away on going super high or low, just wiggle around a bit like a lil ghostie :)

@leigh i'd do this for maybe a minute at a time, a couple of times a day to start. if it seems to be helping, you might work up to doing more frequently. if you notice your voice "sticking" at a certain point, hum in some other pitch ranges and come back to it later.

and of course, stop if it feels bad or causes other problems!

@leigh Andy Serkis had some home remedy of honey and other stuff that he used when he did Gollum in the LotR movies and a singer friend said it was good stuff for her.
[ETA: looks like “Gollum juice” was his name for it.]

@leigh How about a neck/throat ice-pack? Prob a bit uncomfortable but cold can do good things for various inflammation-related ailments.
@leigh no, that's pretty much it. I might by that point be thinking about whether to ask my doctor about steroids
@leigh boiled coca cola with lemon and ginger is always my go-to if my throat and/or voice is fucked
@leigh After two weeks, I might be looking more at a doctor to make sure nothing's wrong, but in the moment, "Entertainer's Secret" is supposed to be useful. Not sure if it's good for post-con stuff after (hopefully temporary) damage is done though.
@aschmitz good to know! And yeah, gonna make a doc appointment today 😢

@aschmitz @leigh
For future reference: I bring Singer's Saving Grace (throat spray) and Throat Coat tea to every speaking engagement or major business meeting, and I use Throat Coat in general when I have a sore throat or scratchy voice

The spray is a strong herbal flavor that takes some getting used to (partly licorice but not a tasty flavor). But it's reliably magical at scavenging a scratchy voice after an hour of speaking.

The tea is not quite as effective at holding off scratchiness but brilliantly soothing for a sore throat or COVID. More pleasant flavor also. Slippery elm, marshmallow root, licorice, fennel, cinnamon, etc. They also have excellent non -menthol lozenges (also pectin, like Luden's)

@saraislet @aschmitz I have 5 bags of throat coat and a thermos of boiling water with me right now lololol
@leigh When I was a kid, I had laryngitis for a couple of weeks. No idea if this really works, but my mom got a big mixing bowl; filled it with near-boiling water; put in a lot of Vicks Vaporub; I put my head over it, she put a towel over my head, and I breathed the steam. Sort of an improvised sauna. Also a big believer in hot honey and lemon (with a LOT of honey and a LOT of lemon). Hope it's not walking pneumonia or something more serious.
@mikeloukides @leigh as far as home remedies go, +1 on all this and “yes and”: eucalyptus oil can replace vaporub and adding ginger to the lemon/honey brew.
