We've got this cheap egg cooker that plays the loudest, most terrifying alarm you've ever heard when it's done cooking. My wife requested that I make it "less aggressive" so I hacked it into the most gentle egg cooker of ALL TIME

(warning: probably loud)

These are such beautifully simple machines. It's got a heating element, a fuse and an alarm. when the water evaporates, the plate gets hot enough to open the fuse. The power is then rerouted through the alarm. So you control cooking length simply by adding more/less water!
All I did was replace the alarm (which took 120V AC directly) with a little AC-DC module (basically what's inside a phone charger) and so it sends out 5V DC when its done cooking. I'm knocking it down to 3.3 and hooking it up directly to the the music box.

@gvy_dvpont This is similar to the way that simple rice cookers and electric kettles work.
I always thought it was a very clever solution that didn't involved complicated parts.
@gvy_dvpont ... Why did they design it the original way? Who thought that was a good idea?!

@Craigp @gvy_dvpont not much thought goes in designing cheap chinese products, you know they don’t make stuff to be good.

A Japanese rice cooker does this:
(I think everyone should have a zojirushi rice cooker at home)

@Craigp

@gvy_dvpont

I'm going to guess that the alarm was motivated by someone who always forgot that they had eggs cooking and wound up coming back from the yard/basement/garage to find the eggpocalypse.

@arniepix @Craigp @gvy_dvpont As someone who owns one of these devices, and who is married to someone who had previously forgotten about eggs being boiled in the traditional way on the stove, I can confirm that the alarm is appreciated by some. 🤣

@ilikepi
@Craigp @gvy_dvpont

This is why I bought my wife a whistling teapot.

@Craigp @gvy_dvpont the adrenaline helps the eggs go down
@naught101 @Craigp @gvy_dvpont When you dunk boiled eggs in cold water to help the shells separate better, it is called scaring the eggs… this is an alternate way to scare them.
@gvy_dvpont The original alarm is so horrible. Why would they do that lol
@MLE_online feels like they just repurposed hardware from some old early digital alarm clocks lol
Good sound to wake you up, bad sound to tell you about your egg being ready.
@timonsku It also sounds like phone alert to tell you that there's a severe weather warning and to take shelter
@MLE_online @timonsku SEVERE EGG WARNING WE ARE HARD BOILED THIS IS NOT A DILL

@reconbot @MLE_online @timonsku

A) i absolutely love this solution
B) the engineer who made that alarm, & the manager(s) that approved it should all be fired.
C) one of my favorite features of my Zojirushi rice cooker is that it plays Twinkle Twinkle Little Star to let you know it's done. ❤️

@masukomi @reconbot @timonsku I wish my Zojirushi rice cooker did that, but it's an analog model, so it just clunks and turns on a light when it's done

@MLE_online

I have a roughly 30 year old version of this one https://www.zojirushi.com/app/product/nslgc

I think the only thing that's changed on this model is the tint of the metal. ;)

I love it so much, but I will admit to being tempted by the unnecessarily awesome $$$ ones they have. Alas, i was tempted by a CNC more, so that's not going to happen. ;)

@masukomi what? no. I just cook in batches

@MLE_online oh.

Yeah, that's a good use too. I tend to make large quantites of rice when making batches of dog food, but I'm so used to doing it with my wee 3 cup one that I forget i could just get a bigger one.

@masukomi I mean, this thing cooks 2 cups of rice just fine! that's how I usually use it.
@timonsku @MLE_online i remember having an alarm clock like that when i was young and getting so upset and angry that more than once i'd turn it off and deliberately sleep in late out of spite

then i had my laptop play a random song in the morning and one of my best ever wakeup experiences was lying in bed watching my consciousness gradually piece itself together to the tune of "The Scientist" by Coldplay

my cell phone alarm is now always configured to a softer song

@timonsku @MLE_online

Are you crazy? In what world would that be a good sound to wake up to?!

@naught101 @MLE_online good at waking you up and "good to wake up to" are two entirely different things
@gvy_dvpont
I know very similar sound. For some reason this seems to be a best practice among egg cooker manufacturers.
@Gargron @gvy_dvpont Oh yeah, one of those dash egg cookers, I love ours but yeah startles the hell out of you when that damn thing goes off, I'm sure it scares the cats.
@gvy_dvpont Why don't they always sound like that!? (we have one of those at the office lunch room & that heinous alarm causes minor panic attacks weekly...)
@Gargron @gvy_dvpont Yup, that's the exact same one we have.

@gvy_dvpont

RUN FOR YOUR LIFE THE EGG IS COMING OH GOD WE SHOULD HAVE LISTENED WHY DID WE NOT PREPARE FOR THE EGG

@gvy_dvpont it sounds a bit scary too, nevertheless
@gvy_dvpont made my day… best mod ever!
@gvy_dvpont Clearly the original engineer was hard of hearing and his neighbors despised him.
@gvy_dvpont
🤣 The first alarm sounded like it’s a warning that it’s about to burst into flames and burn down your house. The new alarm sounds like it’s time to take a nap.
@gvy_dvpont I'd buy that for the music alone.
@gvy_dvpont Two observations about this:
1. WOW, that egg cooker alarm should be illegal. It could double as a fire alarm.
2. That music box clearly doesn't have enough notes to cover the range, so it just goes up an octave to compensate. Fascinating.
@gvy_dvpont wow, that Before sounds like the noise my phone makes when there's a tornado bearing down on my house
@gvy_dvpont mais pourquoi pas plutôt une casserole, une cuisinière et un compte-minute #ÀLAncienne
@gvy_dvpont i want one which says in a Dalek voice "Eggs-terminate! Eggs-terminate!"
@Dingsextrem @gvy_dvpont And that turns off and opens the lid automatically.
@gvy_dvpont Good Lord that sounds like a tornado alarm.
@gvy_dvpont oh wow, I own one of those -- haven't used it for quite a few years, and the start of the video triggered the reptilian "kill that sound now" response that the device entrained in me.
@gvy_dvpont how do you go about finding the parts that make noise? If I were to dig into a much larger appliance, what should I look for?

@iris First of all, obligatory: please be careful!! Don't go digging while the device is plugged in. What I did was kinda dangerous TBH (not sure what your comfort level is with electronics, just making sure).

Most alarms/buzzers I've ever seen are round/black with a hole in the middle:

@gvy_dvpont Now make it steam powered, and out of copper to really lean into the steampunk aesthetic.
@Will we already got the steam!!!
@gvy_dvpont Soviet appliance turned into a japanese appliance!
@gvy_dvpont I have this cooker and have always wanted to do something like this. Total cook time is typically around 15 minutes so I just set a SEPARATE alarm for 14 minutes so I’m ready for it. 🤪
