@itsfoss Bottles, because it makes using Wine (for running Windows applications like Ableton Live) so much easier and not affect your system's Wine installation (because of the containerized approach). It's also FOSS and on Flathub for easy installation.
@cameronbosch @itsfoss Bottles is good but oversold to newbies IMO. It works great on some applications, not all.
@jpgaubier @itsfoss Then again, you could say that about Wine in general. It usually doesn't hurt to try. One less application running on Windows means one less barrier to staying on Linux.
@itsfoss quickemu for quickly installing a Windows VM to use programs that don't run well or at all on Bottles.
@Siucraym @itsfoss I wouldn't. Newcomers would see websites not working and may not blame them on Firefox, but on Linux in general (because almost every distro preinstalls it). And i have other issues with Firefox to the point I cannot use it. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend Firefox until these issues are fixed.

@Siucraym @itsfoss @cameronbosch

I would suggest Floorp instead of Firefox. Cameron, what issues do you have with Firefox? I've been using fork of Floorp called FireDragon (Garuda's spin) and I don't have any issues.

@backtoanalog @Siucraym @itsfoss Isn't Floorp not FOSS though? (I do use a non FOSS browser, but only because I cannot find any better alternative.) Firefox is missing PWA support (they actually are now the ONLY browser to lack this feature and pulled it), are not run well, almost killing off Thunderbird, the general lack of direction with Firefox, controversial decisions that they feebley try to defend but fail, and many more issues.

@cameronbosch @backtoanalog @Siucraym @itsfoss Floorp is actually open source, it’s based on FF after all so uses the Mozilla license.

@orbitalmartian @backtoanalog @Siucraym @itsfoss Just because something uses a copyleft base doesn't always mean the entire resulting product is copyleft or FOSS. For example, both the LGPL and MPL allow for use in propietary code bases as long as the LGPL/MPL parts remain accessible and comply with the terms of the license.
@orbitalmartian @backtoanalog @Siucraym @itsfoss Interesting, because I had heard that Floorp wasn't under the MPL...

@orbitalmartian @Siucraym @itsfoss @cameronbosch

If you read Floorp licensing info, it says MPL 2.0.

Try contacting developer with your PWA issues. That feedback will be important to them. Maybe they'll be able to help.

If Firefox and forks don't work for you, you can use Brave (It is a nice Chromium alternative).

@backtoanalog @orbitalmartian @Siucraym @itsfoss I tried Brave. Too much crypto crap in the browser and other shady things for my liking.

I am using a Chromium non FOSS browser @Vivaldi mainly because it's the best option given my circumstances.

@cameronbosch @backtoanalog @Siucraym @itsfoss @Vivaldi Vivaldi is great, I always forget it’s not FOSS. It’s amazing.
@orbitalmartian @backtoanalog @Siucraym @itsfoss @Vivaldi Same here. I know why they didn't open source the UI (the part that isn't FOSS), but I still really like it.

@backtoanalog @orbitalmartian @Siucraym @itsfoss And there was serious backlash when Firefox removed the feature. Did they care? Of course not. That's the attitude that caused me to leave.

Firefox 85 is Here, But Mozilla is Killing PWA Features

Mozilla released Firefox 85 this week, adding protections against so-called supercookies. But it’s also taking a major step back from PWAs.

Thurrott.com
@backtoanalog @Siucraym @itsfoss @cameronbosch Or Thorium or my personal favourite and which I use on all my devices, Vivaldi.
@cameronbosch @Siucraym @itsfoss If it wasn't Foss, Garuda wouldn't have been able to fork it. There is an extension (plugin) called Progressive web apps for firefox that will help you with your needs.

@backtoanalog @Siucraym @itsfoss True on the forking of Floorp.

I'm more shocked Mozilla still refuses to add back PWA support. That is a deal breaker for me, hard stop. Also, the plugin straight up didn't work when I tried Librewolf. And I tried for almost 12 hours to get it to work without success. Won't be moving back unless they add it back.

Also, an extension like that can't be any good if it's not in the browser natively. Why hasn't any fork added the code back?

@cameronbosch
Which Websites don't work with Firefox and which issues do you mean?
Also: what would be your recommended alternative?

I never encountered a website not working with Firefox, except some videoconferencing services many years ago. Today they all work with Firefox for me.
@Siucraym @itsfoss

@josterburg @Siucraym @itsfoss Sites that use PWA technologies. Also, I would use either Vivaldi (if you aren't a FOSS purist) or Brave (if you are).
@itsfoss Microsoft Edge
so you can remember how crap windohs is
@itsfoss AppImageLauncher because it doesn't require knowing any command to install appimage

@itsfoss

LibreOffice because most people could benefit from having a full "office suite."

@TimBondy @itsfoss That's a great choice. I could also add @ONLYOFFICE to this list as they are also a FOSS/copyleft office suite with Microsoft Office compatibility that can often be better than LibreOffice and can be deployed for servers.
@itsfoss #pacman becouse you need to install software

@itsfoss @xanderekpl

In that case, Octopi for access to AUR (preferably Chaotic AUR).

@itsfoss Blank Debian or MX Linux, with a KDE Desktop Environment
@itsfoss An IRC client (e.g. HexChat). You can usually get better tech support on IRC than you can by calling Microsoft or Apple tech support on Windows/MacOS.
@itsfoss This is theoretical and not necessarily an application (but it could be), but maybe a guide on how to use the Linux terminal (bash, fish, or zsh) and some common dos and don'ts.
@itsfoss "man"

@itsfoss @Axel1973

I am assuming you mean cli command for manuals. It has too much information for new users. I would suggest TLDR, or better yet, TealDeer. It gives user the most used options.

@itsfoss keepassxc to save and retrieve passwords

@itsfoss
Firefox: to browse
KeePass/Bitwarden: storing passwords
Editor (vim/nano or notepad): to store notes
Lynis: scan your system for security and learn Linux along the way

Oh right, one ☺️

@itsfoss I need Krita, Inkscape, OpenToonz, & OBStudio. What do I need to make getting those programs as easy as possible? Edit: Oh! And I need to make sure my XP-Pen Deco 01 works.
@itsfoss Timeshift, Snapper or Systemback - a snapshot application with short instruction how to use it correctly. Saves life if you screw something up.

@itsfoss Mastodon autobooster for all itsfoss links

@itsfoss

FreeTube!!! So the new user can watch YouTube videos without interruptions of ads. And not the other way around, like it is on YouTube. :)

@itsfoss Flameshot. More DEs should have as easy to use screenshot tools by default, but many don't
@itsfoss that's not easy there are several must have Apps for Beginner in Linux, mainly theese: Firefox, Libreoffice, Thunderbird.
@itsfoss just one? 😁
For what usage?
@itsfoss Firefox because it's the best browser that's protecting your privacy :)
