The "Book386" (a Hand386 in the Book8088 case) that I've long wanted was just released (called the Pocket 386)! https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256805356267711.html
the seller linked in my previous post is out but this other one has 4 left: https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256806577006233.html
@polpo totally portable
@vga256 @polpo You might think you're joking but back around 1998 Toshiba Librettos with this spec used to sell for about ten times the price.
@cstross @vga256 @polpo Did they do less-than Pentium Librettos?
@jxyzn @vga256 @polpo IIRC the first Libretto was a Pentium 50MHz (I had a second-hand one), but there were earlier pocket-sized laptops, all the way to the Atari Portfolio, aka the DIP Pocket PC (an 80C88 from 1989) which ran on 3 AA cells!
@cstross @vga256 @polpo Oh yeah, the Portfolio! Great for ATM-hacking, as shown in the T2 documentary. I wish I still had my Portfolio. I'd settle for a HP 200lx...
@cstross @jxyzn @vga256 @polpo IBM PC110 was a low end 486, so not much difference to the 386 in that. Nokia Communicator started out at 386EX and went up over time.
@etchedpixels @jxyzn @vga256 @polpo Then there's the Psion 3/3a/3c/3MX, which ran on a NEC V30 core with some custom hardware (V30 was a fast 8086 superset), and the Psion 5/5MX, on ARM, which evolved into Symbian unto the later Nokia Communicators (S80). The Atari Portfolio devs previously worked on the Psion 3's predecessor, the Psion Organizer family ...
@cstross @vga256 @polpo My pocket PC is my phone.ΒΉ

Sure, its UI is a bit fiddly to use, but by the standards of when the Libretto was new, it's practically a supercomputer.

____
ΒΉ Well, OK, my
tablet. I actually use my "phone" more as a cellular modem than anything else.
@polpo
To have $219 or to not have $219, that is the question
@polpo Interesting, it was 10 left 25 mins ago, and now only 7! :D
@polpo ohhhh that's incredibly tempting

but i cannot spare the money for that right now though, i need to save all my money for my upcoming move...
@polpo No mention of how much RAM though, or clock speed. 1MB, 4, 5, 8, 16, or more?
@polpo Reeeeeally wish they used proper 4x3 LCDs.
@polpo that is going on my wanted list 😍
@polpo YES this is wonderful!
@polpo Wasn't the 386 discontinued back in 2007?
@polpo They're already out... it's probably for the best. 😌
@polpo oh my gosh, this is so incredibly tempting
@polpo I've become weary of these small 90's laptops after it came out that they were ripping off GPL BIOS code from Sergey Kiselev without providing source code.
@developing_agent @polpo The Chinese have a complicated relationship with intellectual property

@mjgardner
Having a "complicated relationship" doesn't excuse their behavior insofar as my willingness to buy their hardware.

When they benefit from code that Sergey provides they can do the bare minimum that he asks in return.

@developing_agent Good news! You weren’t in the target market anyway!

@mjgardner

The hell gives you that idea, lol. πŸ˜†

I'd love to own exactly this, hopefully someone comes along who isn't a lazy parasite. 🀞 In the mean time I guess I'll just have to stick to (Sergey's) PC XT.

@polpo needs a banana, I can't picture it's size, tho someone posted a pc in a pocket so that's helpful
@polpo awww... sold out
@togo @polpo stilll available here:
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005005542582463.html
(unfortunately by the time I save up enough money to buy one, they're gonna be gone again 😭)
@polpo Sold out after only selling 19. ☹️
@polpo Woot! Restocked, looks like I got one.
@charonpdx Nice! Looks like there's plenty now.

@polpo

You would have loved the Gateway2000 Handbook.

(I did, wrote a lot of FreeBSD on it in BART)

@polpo I wonder when they discover Vortex86 SoC family and start making fast 486 computers in such form factor.
@hrw yeah, a fast 486 is what I'd really want in this form factor. There has to be a good reason why they haven't used a Vortex86 yet...
@polpo i got my Book 8088 v2 the other day, this shell and keyboard look pretty different from it
@jswagner ah you're right, it is pretty different!
@polpo That image with it in a jeans pocket is hilarious.

@polpo This is very cool.

I absolutely do not need one (I keep telling myself!), but I'm really glad things like this are being made!

@polpo I would strongly suggest watching the video on that page and paying attention to the 4:3 resolution being stretched on the widescreen panel though, and the "mouse" appears to be by mode-toggling the cursor keys.
@LionsPhil unlike their previous devices which always stretch to widescreen, you can actually get into the display's OSD and set the ratio to 4:3 (and adjust color balance, which can get out of whack on the Hand386... I went down a huge rabbit hole with mine). The mouse seems fine for quick testing which is perfect for my use case (developing PicoGUS on the road).
@polpo I'm tempted to get one, as it'd be useful to have to hand as a portable Win3.11 environment, especially if it reduces the need for me to get my future 386 desktop build out from storage, outside of some specific use cases that need more exotic hardware!
