i do not use mastodon. this is not a mastodon account. if you are using mastodon, i highly recommend trying alternatives. a diverse ecosystem is a healthy ecosystem

@linear I thought that was just me and I had set up something wrong!
one of these days a kde developer will finally figure out how to make plasmashell not crash when the monitor suspends

until then i will simply have to be content with manually relaunching it on all my computers that run kde, multiple times a day

Remarkable investigation into Telegram by IStories (in Russian):
https://www.istories.media/stories/2025/06/10/kak-telegram-svyazan-s-fsb/

English version by OCCRP:
http://www.occrp.org/en/investigation/telegram-the-fsb-and-the-man-in-the-middle

tl;dr:

👉 Telegram uses a single company with ties to the Russian FSB as their sole infrastructure provider, globally.

👉 Combined with a cleartext device identifier Telegram's protocol requires to be prepended to all encrypted messages, this allows for global surveillance of Telegram users.

I am quoted in this story.

Guys, I think I downloaded the wrong developer release. My Mac OS GUI is looking a lot more polished and refined than what I am seeing on apple.com
one thing that is striking to me about it is that it is one of the first i have seen that uses a visual effect that could not plausibly be implemented on and rendered by an iMac G3, unlike previous UI redesign paradigms. you do actually need some GPU shaders to adequately approximate this.

this is actually very interesting since it means that embedded device manufacturers are not going to be cloning the UI for use on, for example, your workplace's weird IoT coffee machine that has a cpu about equal in performance to an iMac G3 and has an 800x480 single-touch capacitive touch display that only runs at 10fps, or your grandma's home security system that uses the exact same SoC and panel
ngl, being someone with really strong opinions about UI design, the liquid glass ui refresh looks really well thought out and executed

this is the first ui refresh i have seen from
any significant tech company in the past 12 years that has given me a strong positive first impression. i never liked the corporate flat design stuff, and most "neuomorphic" stuff gives me the creeps, like sterile hospital vibes
