The fucking Times. It follows up yesterday's awful poll with another. That they even asked this question is evidence of the bias--the agenda--in their poll. Who made age an "issue"? The credulous Times falling into the right-wing's projection. This is not journalism. Shameful.
NY Times, did you ask your random voters whether Trump is too insane, doddering, racist, sexist, criminal, traitorous, hateful to be effective as President? And why are the people you picture both white? This is not a poll. It is your agenda. This is not journalism. Shame.

@jeffjarvis
🤦‍♂️ Holy-TRANSPARENT-Batman!

Look,
equally brutal, and I think worth mentioning, is the ease at which people accept and process this, BUY it if you will. Yeah, the Times are complete assholes for doing this...but what does it say about people when it works?🤔

🙈 🙉 🙊

@jeffjarvis Isn't the word "just" interesting in "just too old to be president"?

One can envision the "American" with their hands on their hips speaking through an exasperated sigh.

@jeffjarvis Yeesh, they just keep going back to the same well. Don't they?

I finally pulled the trigger on cancelling my subscription.

@jeffjarvis
They are owned by one or more of the tax cut crowd.
That is the only thing they are concerned with...tax cuts.
@jeffjarvis Has anyone figured out where this age issue started? From my perspective it was something MAGAts said for a while despite their candidate being less than half a decade younger. I don't remember when non-MAGA folks started talking about it, seems very recent, though.
@jeffjarvis @jinglepostman Incredibly bad journalism. Not polling, per se, but the play, the ageism in the coverage, lack of focus on what Trump and Biden are actually doing and saying on the trail (look elsewhere for reporting on Trump's crazy talk) and the reality of the issues. And so much more. No accountability. We need a corps of public editors of diverse perspectives and a platform for ongoing debate about media performance.
@jeffjarvis Probably not a majority of Biden's voters, but enough think he's a one and done president. His age is a factor as we're living in times we need younger, energetic, motivated, decisive president. Biden isn't it. There are several equal or better qualified democratic candidates who can win in November. Biden needs to withdraw and give the future to them. JMO
@wsrphoto @jeffjarvis Biden already has a younger and perfectly capable person to take over if he's unable to complete his term. Why is she not good enough?
@textualdeviance @jeffjarvis I'm predicting Biden won't finish second term. The stress of world and domestic politics and events will overwhelm him physically. VP Harris was my vote in 2020 when Sherrod Brown didn't enter race, and would be now if Biden withdrew. She's ready now.
@wsrphoto @jeffjarvis Great. Then she's ready to take over if he can't finish the term, just like I said.
@wsrphoto @jeffjarvis "energetic?" Really? What specifically would a younger person do as President that Biden isn't doing because he's so old? Chop firewood? Now the White House lawn? Clear brush from his ranch?
@tob @jeffjarvis presidency is non-stop requiring energy to work long and hard. I don't see Biden, despite being healthy and fit for being mid-80's, having stamina unless he limits his time and attention. Do we want a president not to be able to match the demands of the job?
@wsrphoto @jeffjarvis Is there any specific evidence that Biden isn't able to match the demands of the job? I mean, just speaking generally about human physiology, another decade of productivity is not an unreasonable expectation for a healthy, white American man of Biden's age and background.
@jeffjarvis Gee, if we cancel both NYT & WaPo what’s left? Not WSJ. Foreign papers, broadcasters like BBC, certain Internet sites and social media?
@JonChevreau I highly recommend Meidas Touch (on YT and they also ahve a website). Though their coverage is mainly the "intersection of law and politics". I used to rely on the Guardian, but over the last few years, they've been going the way of the NYT, @jeffjarvis
@JonChevreau @jeffjarvis NPR, PBS, AP, The Guardian, local newspapers, local newspapers, local newspapers.

@jeffjarvis

I've seen so many bizarre headlines in regards to polls. Enough to make me sound like a conspiracy theorist and say the polls were intentionally designed to get the reported results.

@jeffjarvis

I guess some people think I should consider voting for a well documented serial lying, pussy-grabbing, secret document stealing, criminal that believes he is above all US laws?
And these people are serious in that belief that everyone should consider the Orange Shit Stain for President of the United States?

Good luck with that. But also realize that #Trump will do away with all media except those under his complete control if he gets elected.

@jeffjarvis

The chance of the New York Times winning the respect of MAGA conservatives is, like, one in a million.

NYT response:

@jeffjarvis

Democrats!!! Take this advice from a European. Replace Biden with someone else!!

The only reason an asshole like Trump can win again is if you do not provide a likable alternative.

You made that mistake putting Clinton against Trump. Don't make that mistake again.

@jeffjarvis
I think if we are going to mention age... the NYT is 172 years old. That's a bit old to be a news source right?
We should let the younger news sources do the job and the NYT should retire.
Remember, corporations are people too, it's time for a NYT retirement potluck.
@jeffjarvis the Times isn't "falling into" right wing tropes and talking points. They're leading them. The Times is the point of the spear. If you're reading them, you're getting gored by it.
@jeffjarvis I couldn't fucking care LESS whether or not he's "too old to be effective, because we have a competent and effective vice president and it's her literal JOB to take over if necessary. And also because the enemy is full-on galloping fascism.
@jeffjarvis I disagree. Age is a very real issue. Biden does Democrats a real disservice in not offering a younger choice. A Biden/Trump rematch is not in the best interests of the country.

@jeffjarvis So, this is the same poll as yesterday; they are just slowly releasing answers over time and harping on their favorite tune: “Biden is old.” I’d like to point out a big flaw in their poll beyond the chosen questions.

Look at the % of people they polled by population density: 24% city, 41% suburb, 35% rural. The actual population density in America: 31% urban, 55% suburban, 14% rural. They are over-representing rural voters by almost 3 to 1 in this poll. It doesn’t appear they corrected for this at all.

Also, 35% of their respondents are from the “South” region, only 20% from the northeast. Although they don’t specify exactly what that means, this doesn’t appear to be anywhere close to an even distribution.

Finally, 66% of their respondents were white. White people are 57.8% of the population according to the latest census.

In summary, this poll HEAVILY over represents southern rural white voters.

@mls14 @jeffjarvis
Since the President is elected by electoral votes won, not total votes won, I suspect looking at how well the poll captures the electoral vote is more significant than the urban/suburban/rural partition
@PaulWermer @jeffjarvis Ok then, 35% of respondents being from the south is even worse. AZ, GA, MI, NV, PA, WS are the biggest swing states. Only one is in the south region - GA, which has a large black population they undercounted. So thanks for pointing out that these results are even more skewed!
@mls14 @jeffjarvis interesting point. If the election is dependent only on swing states, that really changes how polls should be designed if we want meaningful results, rather than the bs horserace calling we see.
@mls14 @jeffjarvis
Important distinctions, probably too easy to overlook.

@mls14 @jeffjarvis

I stopped believing polls were even trying to be accurate when despite them, the GOP has been taken to the cleaners in most special elections and proposition ballots in swing areas, since Dobbs.

Instead I sit in a corner like this 🤞

@Edelruth @mls14 @jeffjarvis I'm not American, so things may be different over there, but here in Australia it's completely normal for the polls in a by-election (which I *think* is analogous to what you call a special election) to be less reliable than the polling in a nationwide federal election. I wouldn't put *too* much stock in that specific fact.

There may be other factors that make it right to mistrust polling, but I'd say not that one.

@mls14 @jeffjarvis This is real “consent manufacturing go brrrr”

That and the “majority of voters in our poll say Biden is to old” like *they* weren’t the ones who introduced and pushed the idea.

@MisuseCase @mls14 @jeffjarvis it's such a hilarious criticism in this election. Yes, Biden is too old and clearly isn't as mentally sharp as he once was or as one would like a president to be. But Trump is *also* too old, and has shown his mental faculties to be so much worse even over half a decade ago when he was still early in his presidency. If it's a problem for both sides, it doesn't work as an attack against one side.
@mls14 @jeffjarvis Excellent points. Would love do to away with public polls altogether. They are so easily rigged, and without analysis like yours the average person has no idea as to how faulty they are.
The media thrives on polls. They are cheap and easy to conduct. They replace real reporting that would actually educate the public on candidates and issues.
@mls14 @jeffjarvis …….. anything for ratings ………
@jeffjarvis The NYT is effectively killing journalism!
@jeffjarvis "A majority of voters thinks the New York Times should get on the ice and be pushed out to sea."

@jeffjarvis
I know it seems crazy that people working so hard to be informed are trapped in a collective delusion, but here we are.

Polls are designed to be garbage. The people who respond to polls are weirdos & liars. Some lie for fun, some because they think that’s what they “should” say, some are malicious, but the dead certain thing about pollsters is they only speak to people who answer “unknown callers”, that is, almost no one.

@jeffjarvis The poll has many holes. For one thing, it shows 47/47 preference among females. YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING. There is absolutely no way that is correct.
@jeffjarvis They want the money T brings... 🤑
@jeffjarvis Leave them a public comment. Educate these a-holes.
@jeffjarvis just had lunch with my mom, five years older than Biden. Her model of how the world works is seriously broken and her attention span is tiny. I'm 67 and I'm too old to run.
@TomBerend
Well, on that scientific basis....
@jeffjarvis The Times is not "falling into the right-wings's projection", they have been actively promoting it for a long time.

@jeffjarvis
Don't forget there's a soupçon of racism in declaring him too old; we might get Kamala taking over!

All the while Trump is openly talking about concentration camps and is unable to speak common English words.

@jeffjarvis The president alone doesn’t run *everything*. It’s who you appoint, and surround yourself with. We know who is gunning to be with TFG and we know who surrounds Biden. To focus on one person is missing the forest for the trees.
@jeffjarvis
the story says, 'Bidens Voters say he is too old.' Voters hate Trump so much, they will vote for a guy who it too old to be effective. That should be the real headline.
@jeffjarvis
omg, is this thread even real..
