A friend sent this to me and y'all might enjoy

@tweedge I actually would enjoy a fridge with an ESP32 and a few sensors provided all is documented and I can flash it with #ESPHOME so chose what I automate what I want myself.

What I don’t want is an app that stops getting updates after 3 years and just serves to send me spam.

@tweedge You may like this one, too:
@tweedge One day I'm going to set up a certification authority for things which don't have an app or AI or chatbots -- like the FSC, MSC, Organic or Circle-Ks -- a certificate that everyone can come to know and companies proudly display (for an accreditation fee, of course), hire some great lawyers from the income to defend it, and thereby make my millions -- miiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiillions 😄 . I'd call it something like "Made with Natural Intelligence" ("NI"; logo from fiver of stylised human top-half where arms are also a smile).

@tweedge for refrigerators this is actually possible IF you go to smaller higher end appliance stores that stock premium brands like Fisher-Paykel which make very streamlined, high end but not “smart” refrigerators.

But you will pay premium prices.

(Saying this as a very happy owner of one having rejected all the multitude of mainstream mass branded options - most of which also didn’t physically fit into the space previous owners chose for a fridge)

@tweedge Yep. Only "smart" things i trust are the ones i made myself.
@tweedge I bought a "smart" tv last year. And for perhaps 2 day I had it connected to the internet. Then I decided that I didn't like it and unplugged it. I expect you can do the same with a smart fridge :)
@uberprutser @tweedge A telly that wasn't connected to the internet wouldn't be a lot of use to me as I don't have a telly licence ...
@TimWardCam @uberprutser @tweedge You don't need a license just an antenna.
@meshaiman
Depends on where you live. If you don't pay for the public media services, it's illegal to use an antenna. Many people therefore use their TVs as monitors for Netflix or to play back video files locally and depending on what your thing is, this doesn't work well without a network connection.
@TimWardCam @uberprutser @tweedge
@TimWardCam @tweedge In the Netherlands the national tv and some local stations are using DVB-T. Were I live cable tv is not an option. Actually a new DVB-T standard "forced" me to buy a new tv :(
@TimWardCam @uberprutser @tweedge Thing is, I don't want my TV directly connected to the internet. Something else, like a Chromecast, is fine, as long as it's made by a company that is somewhat competent at software and hardware. Plus, it's usually easier and cheaper to replace when it gets outdated (as opposed to the processor in smart TVs, which usually is already on the slower end when brand new).
@tweedge I paid extra for my sonos not having a voice assistant and microphone
@tweedge this is not a joke, sonon one sl without microphone was like 20€ more expensive
@MiaWinter @tweedge you are able to get Sonos gear without a voice assistant? That’s a relief - my Sonos is probably 18 years old and I presume it’ll start failing sometime soon, and I absolutely don’t want anything “smart”
@IanHill @tweedge i don't know if the new stuff has that option, the one I got was one of the last of that generation, but I was kinda glad they had it, like playing with open cards.. "we can't sell your data, so compensate for it" yea gladly, now get out of my house you leeches
@tweedge oh hey that fridge is the camera I'm looking for
@tweedge This is me every time I go shopping...
@tweedge I'm pretty sure my contractor grade "smart oven" is secretly mining crypto or something. I didn't think it was possible for a simple appliance to have a UI that sucks so badly. It's slow and feels warm, even when the oven is cold.

I wish could travel back 30 years so I could tell my teenage self that in the future we will have smart home heating systems where you can set a schedule that it will completely ignore and just turn on randomly when it feels like it. #SmartHome

@tweedge Why would you need an app for a fridge?!

@tomgwynplaine @tweedge

Well part is the CEO urge to use the "less than perfect" chips made in Taiwan. Their offcuts and rejects are a) cheap b) plentiful and c) offer wildly more power than needed.

The other part is that having contents logged and what is in a fridge helps people with disabilities and remote monitoring e.g. of aged person still living independently.

Suitable for everyone? No. Useful in niche cases that benefit from mass market support? Yes.

Hope that helps! I'm no expert!

@Homebrewandhacking @tomgwynplaine @tweedge I somehow feel that the disabled and elderly are not top-of-mind for the people designing and selling these fridges, even if that subset of the population finds some of those features useful.

@varx @tomgwynplaine @tweedge

Sure. You're familiar with ads for infeasibly clumsy people on TV? Reconsider my statements.

But yes they aren't the "target market" but they're the only people with anything approaching an actual need for an app. Do you need an app? I don't need an app. But must use computing and apps so line goes up. As they say.

@Homebrewandhacking @tomgwynplaine @tweedge Yeah, I'm aware of those -- there's a market of people with poor motor control, and (happily) there are companies that target that market.

The thing I'm getting at is that there's a difference between "why would this be useful to anyone" and "why is this being made at all". For fridges, I think there's quite a divergence.

@varx @tomgwynplaine @tweedge

If you need to design a thing then you need to know what you're trying to do. That means addressing or concocting a need.

The question I was providing a potential answer to was "why does a fridge need an app?"

This is called "making conversation". The expected responses include offering alternative theories or adding additional information.

I am no longer interested in conversing with you on this topic. Good day.

@tomgwynplaine @tweedge Because I want to be notified if the door isn't sealed after a minute, or if the temperature has risen above a certain threshold. It's especially important when we're leaving home, out of earshot of any audible alarms. Rather than returning later to throw away hundreds of dollars of spoiled food, I can go back inside to fix the problem.
@tomgwynplaine @tweedge Oh, and this is especially useful for parents. I got a message from my son a day after they left on holiday saying their fridge was using unusual amounts of electricity, so I went over to check. Someone had left their freezer door open just a crack, and all their food was thawed and spoiled. A proper alarm could have saved it by notifying them of the door status before they left.
@tweedge Don't get me started on remote electronic voting.
@tweedge I had a similar experience a couple months ago looking for a new laundry washer & dryer - all the latest models had wifi. Why the hell would my washing machine need wifi? I bought the model from a couple years previous, with no smart features.

@hyc @tweedge A wifi washing machine can be turned on automatically when your home automation system spots a period of cheap electricity.

I use free electricity for doing the laundry when available, as that's always (so far) been during the daytime, but on non-free days I don't stay up to put the machine on at 2am when the price drops.

@TimWardCam @hyc @tweedge do you just schedule it for 2am then, og does your laundry machine have an integration for electricity prices?

@mrFred489 @hyc @tweedge If I had a washing machine that could be told to start a cycle unattended I'd get it to start at 2am - we're on the Flux tariff so fixed prices at fixed times of day.

Today the weather forecast was crap - it was supposed to be cloud and rain, so I charged the battery up quite a lot last night. And then the sun came out and completely filled up the battery ... so I put the washing machine on to use the generated power rather than export it.

@TimWardCam @mrFred489 @tweedge I'm usually awake at 2am anyway, so this bit of automation wouldn't mean much to me. Right now I'm on a flat rate tariff, haven't looked into whether a time-of-day tariff would make much difference yet.
@hyc @mrFred489 @tweedge Ah. I'm still working four days a week and I find it easiest to keep to a standard 9-5 working day, so being awake at 2am wouldn't really suit.

@tweedge

These internet-connected washing machines come with DoS features built in. https://mastodon.social/@gmarkall/111941407358680026

My million dollar idea I want someone to steal and do, so I can be a customer. "Dumb Stuff" we sell electronic appliances that aren't Internet connected. That's all. That's it. That's the pitch. I would buy the <bleep> out of this company if their electronic gadgets were even half way decent, and repairable. Electronic, no wifi, regular screws to open it up. That's it. Do those three things, and you can be sold by this store. I will pay this business to curate and find these devices for me.

I want a fridge that won't join a botnet

I remember trying to buy a TV that does not have “smart” functionality a few years ago. It was a chore. Today it seems nigh-impossible. By the way, we need a nice way of referring to non-smart devices

Songs on the Security of Networks
@tweedge I was in BestBuy a while back asking for a dumb TV. The staff did not get my humour
@tweedge I bring a “Houseplants of Gor” vibe to device usage that smart devices do not like

@tweedge

It should be illegal to sell proprietary devices with proprietary os' that can't be re-flashed with something open source and privacy respecting. if you put a computer in a device that doesn't need it, the device should work without the computer inside or with a custom rom on it as well

@tweedge I set up a wiki to collect products like this and yes I work in tech 😂
@spongefile @tweedge you are doing good in this world, thank you!
@tweedge "I want a washer and dryer with mechanical timers" - same energy.
@tweedge how can a fridge be smart even?
@tweedge is turning the light on when opening a door considered smart? or a wheel for temperature control inside? or what

@ralen @tweedge all it needs is timed conveyor belts

@ralen @tweedge the one we have can have its temperature controlled over the internet, nothing else. totally useless feature tbh
@luna @tweedge we have a big samsung fridge from early 2000s, it's not smart i guess but is very good and convinient
@tweedge It has actually come to this. Unless you buy the cheapest shittiest one they have.

@tweedge

I bought a new freezer just before Thanksgiving. The door, on the top, has a littler door with USB logo. There's nothing behind that smaller door on mine, some other model must use it. I shudder to think why a freezer would need USB.

@tweedge You don't have to work in tech to want an appliance or car or anything mundane with the add dangerous tech.
@tweedge I moved into a new build and it came with a dumb app-less refrigerator, dishwasher and oven. My neighbours who came visiting were surprised to know why I didn’t get the ‘smart’ appliances. My answer was simple but they couldn’t believe why I thought so.
@tweedge I don't get it. Just buy second hand?
