In February 2023, I helped @mwichary run what became the #1 tech book campaign on Kickstarter for his massive tome, Shift Happens. How did we raise over $750,000 in the campaign (and sell more copies later)? How did we deal with the expected—and surprise problems? I've detailed all that in this essay: https://glennf.medium.com/how-we-crowdfunded-750-000-for-a-giant-book-about-keyboard-history-c30e24c4022e Hard-won advice from this weathered campaign veteran.
How We Crowdfunded $750,000 for a Giant Book about Keyboard History

Yes, you can hire me as a crowdfunding consultant, book editor, or project manager. See this page for more details. The book project Shift Happens raised over $750,000 via crowdfunding on Kickstarter…

@glennf this post could be a book on its own. So much good information here!
@jenni Thank you! I have a partial draft of a book underway but so busy with other projects, this is my summary!
@glennf @mwichary A ton of hard work, but totally worth it. I have always loved keyboards, but now more than ever thanks to you two.
@chockenberry @mwichary CRAIG! Thank you! Glad to be the midwife on this.

@glennf @mwichary A bit of trivia inspired by this morning’s chapter on the influence of Olivetti: I worked in the building where the first Olivetti typewriters were made. It was called “Vecchio Ico” (pronounced eee-co) and the I.C.O. stood for Ingegnere (Engineer) Camillo Olivetti.

Cool building and so many stunning typewriters that everyone else took for granted.

@glennf @mwichary if you’re gonna have a product that is a luxury good that costs a moderate amount of money and might take many months to ship and be subject to delays, keyboard enthusiasts are quite possibly the most well suited customer for you!

But seriously, I am excited for my copy to arrive soon. Congrats on a great creation!

@harpaa01 @mwichary a chef’s kiss emoji to your reply!
@harpaa01 @glennf @mwichary Mine arrived a week or so ago and it was absolutely worth the wait. And the weight. And the money. To your point, I ran one of the first “real” Mac type shops in the early 90s and we would fight over new ADB keyboards when they arrived. Anyway, you are going to love this.
@goodthinking In my house there's no fighting over quality Apple ADB keyboards; I have amassed enough of them that there are always enough to go around! :D
@glennf @mwichary A very interesting read, and congratulations on what looks a brilliant publication 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

@glennf @mwichary @a2_4am I appreciate how thorough and informative your article was.

Your article is bound to help other folks who are interested in starting their own Kickstarter campaigns. Thank you!

@krishnadraws @mwichary @a2_4am Thank you! I feel like this is scratching the surface, but it includes a lot of detail that I think everyone should now when they're trying to puzzle out whether it makes sense.
@glennf The ZX Spectrum was my first computer, but I have never seen this clamp-on joystick before. 😳
@glennf @mwichary That was a very interesting peek into the funding process—thank you for writing that. I can’t wait to get my copy of Shift Happens!
@glennf @mwichary Looks awesome. Of course, I own a book about the history of typewriters that includes 30+ pages of different keyboard layouts around the world (fascinating!) so I may not be the standard book-buying demographic

@glennf @mwichary

This is fascinating, Glenn. And so well timed. I am just now trying to understand how to shape a KS campaign. I may be pinging you on this soon :)

@shoq Would be delighted to talk!
@glennf @mwichary Extra points for a including the Speccy in your post. Some points taken back for describing that keyboard as anything else than a horrifying rubber-keyed monster.
@glennf @mwichary thank you for doing this, it’s just lovely
@glennf @mwichary fabulous details about the project! And my copy came today! Undamaged perfect and it’s finally real!
@glennf @mwichary I got my copy today and it is even more spectacular than I hoped. You all have so much to be proud of.
@glennf @mwichary this is a masterclass in how to run a campaign. Thanks for all the mentions of how BackerKit was used for post-campaign pledge management! I’ve already pointed to Shift Happens in meetings on how to build audiences the right way, now there’s a whole essay to point people to, this is great.
@glennf @mwichary will there be an electronic version? epub/pdf? I have a relative who would love this book, but due to disability can't use tree based books anymore.
@glennf @mwichary Great read! I’m enjoying my copy of Shift Happens even more than I expected.
@glennf @mwichary Congratulations! I'm expecting my Shift Happens package any day now. Thanks for all of the work and the fascinating background.
