I don’t understand why people who send me emails to promote their software or products expect me to answer them, even just to tell them I’m not interested.

They sent me something, without any invitation. They want to sell me something, or get me to promote their product. Why would they feel I have an obligation to let them know I don’t want to? Just accept that no answer after a few weeks means « no », and stop wasting time and energy on emails.

@thelinuxEXP
well, unless its a foss software it is good to introduce them or just mention them somehow in some videos or podcasts.
@sohrabbehdani @thelinuxEXP
You mean he should promote a brand for free? Hell no

@bery @thelinuxEXP

i said free and opensource software, not a brand or company

@sohrabbehdani @thelinuxEXP ohhh, i misunderstood you as saying "unless it's foss, promote it anyway" myb lol
@sohrabbehdani I wasn’t talking about FOSS projects, more like commercial offers :)
@thelinuxEXP dude it's so funny that I automatically read all your toots with your voice and accent in my brain
@thelinuxEXP especially when they took no effort to check what your channel is about and why it is or out scope you would ever promote that stuff.
@keywan « Hey The Linux » is a thing I don’t want to see anymore
@thelinuxEXP This is the path of AI! Judgment day is innevitable. Skynet will spam you!
@thelinuxEXP
Cultural differences in expectations? You have a very global audience.

@Madagascar_Sky @thelinuxEXP Possible. But keep in mind that the onus on managing social expectations falls on the sender, not the receiver, imo.

As in, it's the sender that should know if the receiver's culture is one that promotes always replying, and not the other way around.

@nanianmichaels @Madagascar_Sky And I would add that a culture that puts the expectation on the receiver to reply to unsolicited commercial offers seems pretty weird to me!

@thelinuxEXP @Madagascar_Sky It might be a culture where replying to any solicitation (commercial or otherwise) is the norm. I could see that being a thing in some Oriental cultures (no idea if that's the case or not, though).

My point so stands, sender is responsible for managing cultural expectations.

@thelinuxEXP @nanianmichaels
Yeah man, you do you. You don't have to change to accommodate stupid expectations. It's they who will have to learn.
@thelinuxEXP People pushed that idea of constant need to reply because of instant messaging and reception notices. They tend to forget spam and harassment feeds on that mechanic. There's no reason to enforce that outside of people you care about. (or when you explicitly asked for messages that requires an answer, like job applications for companies)
@thelinuxEXP I would auto reply my rate for sponsors.
@jacket @thelinuxEXP Conveniently adding a few extra trailing zeroes to make sure they **really** get the hint? 😝
@thelinuxEXP I believe its kind for content creators to reply to commercial request to advertise. Alternately, a content creator can write on their website/social media that no response after a specific period time ( 2 day, 2 week etc) its auto reject. Also they can set auto reject responses after a certain period of no response.
@proverb If I did that, I’d spend 1h each day writing « no thanks » email. I don’t think it’s fair to expect that from anyone!

@thelinuxEXP I don't have a youtube channel so I can't understand properly the situation but they should use a little logic: it's a Linux & open-source channel so logically only FOSS should be promoted, but the fact that for example raid wants to promote is absurd
@bargoderea I’m not against promoting non FOSS things, if I feel they’re a good product that I would use myself, but they shouldn’t expect me to answer them when I didn’t reach out to them :)
@thelinuxEXP This infuriates me. One of the worst offenders was #DataDog who repeatedly "cold called" my personal mobile (dozens of calls over a few years, and probably double that in emails to work and non-work acounts).
I've publicly stated that that is the #1 reason I'll never willingly use their products, or consider them when the decision is mine.
@thelinuxEXP I did go out of my way to respond to #Miro. They'd sent a bunch of "talk to us about your experience emails". My experience of miro has been so universally awful (I don't have great eyesight, and it's an accessibility hellscape), I sent them a fairly lengthy email explaining the issues I had with their product (polite, and fairly detailed I think).
So if your product is so bad that it makes me consider quitting my job, I might actually respond to your emails.

@thelinuxEXP simple (and I would expect this is more a rant post than actual question)

Because it's cheap and it works well enough.

Email 1,000 people and 1 may bite. Cost of marketing program is miniscule compared with other marketing efforts.

It's the Nigerian Prince marketing model.

@thelinuxEXP want to also include unsolicited jobs from recruiters, who directly ask you to tell them when you CAN have a call. I am sorry, I do not recall ever saying I was interested and wanted to hop on a call.

@thelinuxEXP

THAT right there, one of the nuisances of my existence as an academic librarian. I hate "cold call" spam.

@thelinuxEXP my favorite is when they send me a meeting
@thelinuxEXP I'm not even that popular on YouTube, less then 10k subs, and I've gotten offers to try out and promote dog collars and all kinds of stuff because some of my videos feature my dog. I can't even imagine what somebody with any kind of meaningful follower count has to put up with.
@thelinuxEXP tómalo como un reconocimiento al valor de tu opinión 😎
@thelinuxEXP I get requests for sponsored blog posts all the time. I guess they don't expect an answer but the hope that it's easier to say yes than to turn them down.
I now answer with a prepared text that asks for an unreasonably high amount of money. I mean if they are willing to talk about that amount, I might probably get weak and have their sponsored post. I might hit gold! 😄

@thelinuxEXP corporations ruined email by spamming us with endless garbage and now they get upset when we don't reply to their emails?

Email has become worse than useless.
