@Jedigirl I'm not sure about the "I acknowledge your job needs to be done" part. I think people enjoy the fruits of such jobs but don't care how they come into existence, so they might not even notice that there was a job there with someone trying to make a living.
@lulu @Jedigirl They would likely notice if nobody did that job.
@ariaflame @Jedigirl Of course. But unfortunately not as long as it gets done. That's why I think strikes are so important.
@Jedigirl I don't see the implicit acknowledgement in that statement. Certainly there are jobs that don't need to be done. Maybe even jobs that shouldn't be done?
@Qbitzerre @Jedigirl a lot of those jobs pay surprsingly well though...

@Jedigirl

@timo21
I've always thought of it as 'You couldn't pay me enough to do that job, so I won't pay you enough to do it - even though you are doing it!"

@Jedigirl

The only thing they are "acknowledging" is that they are an inhumane asshole who thinks they are above doing that one job that needs doing.

#BadEconomy #DignityOfLabor

@Jedigirl
These things can't all be controlled through a central office, there are jobs where you can't make a living wage, for people who want to supplement their income, if you're in a job that doesn't cover your basic needs it's up to you (not the government) to decide whether or not to stay in that job...enough with the nanny state. People need to be better decision makers not have their decisions made by the state

@zombywoof

You can decide to _leave_, but getting another job is not as simple as "deciding to".

@zombywoof @Jedigirl In the US the median cost of living is 0.8 years of full time male median income, 1.06 years of female median income and 2.79 years of minimum wage.

Current unemployment runs about 3.7%

Where do you propose the minimum wage worker gets the other 2 years' worth of income just to get by?

@zombywoof @Jedigirl Funny this. The state is us. In a democracy we are all responsible. What you suggest is that we should stop organising in institutions because the weak don't deserve protection. If you are rich enough you can hire a militia to protect your property.
@JosjeT @Jedigirl
I'm not saying that
I think the really weak need some kind of support
But
I think too many people are looking to the government to solve their problems
If the job you're in isn't cutting it for you financially don't ask the government to supplement your income. Get a job that satisfies your budgetary needs, there are plenty out there.
We've become bad decision makers in north America & dependence on government is contributing to it
@zombywoof @Jedigirl I get what you're thinking. I am not sure that your analyses is true.
@JosjeT @Jedigirl
I have to add the government isn't the only reason we've become bad decision makers
(when I say "we've" I mean society in general)
We've been played by Madison Avenue and political action influences for many decades pretending to want to take care of us or sell us something that should make our lives easier. Neither socialism or free enterprise can deliver everything society needs, the individual needs to do his/her part.

@Jedigirl

Remember.... "Minimum Wage" is nothing more than your employer saying to you, "I'd pay you less, but I'm afraid of being violated in a prison shower".

@Jedigirl

Take it up another step and just say, "We need work slaves for our wealth to continue prospering, so suck it up and get working."

@Jedigirl With a side dish of "I don't like to be made uncomfortable, and I don't like seeing evidence of how badly this economic system fails to work out for most people, because I happen to be one of the lucky people for whom it does work out."

@Jedigirl

It asumes in the first place that there can be wages you can't make a living with.

Where is that?
A lawles country?

@Jedigirl I think the appropriate term is "entry level" as in this job is for people who haven't had a job before. It is of low value and low risk, so if they flake out and don't show up it doesn't hurt us too much. Because it's low value to the company, the pay is equivalently low. If they demonstrate that they can show up every day and excel at it, then they can move up into a job that requires more skill, dedication, and is more valuable, and thus higher pay. They can also put on the resume "Worked at this job for a year and didn't get fired, so you know I can show up" and get a job of more value. People aren't meant to stay in that kind of job for more than a couple of years, or if they're older than about 21. The job is to recruit graduating high school students into the company and then filter them upwards, or out. It's kind of like an internship, except for people who aren't in college.
