My house isn’t messy, it’s just sorted by Date Last Modified
@tenkuucastle
Not putting away something you just used is actually a good idea.
Now if only there was someone who put away the stuff you hadn't used in a while...
@tenkuucastle I prefer sorting by Date Last Accessed - it requires less work.

@tenkuucastle

Thank you for clarifying what is happening here. Because I was unsure if some rooms were stacks or heaps. But sorted by last modified makes more sense. 😂

@wurzelmann

@tenkuucastle Exactly my point but it seems they don't understand😅
@tenkuucastle Technically, it's more of a cache, since unmodified but accessed things get stuck on the top of the pile too
@tenkuucastle I'm just experimenting with my floor as an open plan storage concept

@tom

Tom, it works wonderfully. Been doing it for decades.

@tenkuucastle

@tenkuucastle LOL, my house looks like my Downloads directory.
@imbrandon @tenkuucastle At some point it'll become too big to be efficient compared to a well-sorted closet. Now if you could somehow speed up the pile like you use faster RAM for cache.
@tenkuucastle ascending or descending?

@Andreas_Sturm
Descending, I assume.
Ascending would mean that, if you used an item you'd put it under all things already stacked on the shelf. So you would have moved those items, creating a logic hole 🫣

@tenkuucastle

@Ifrauding
For ascending you would only have to remove and replace everything, every time one.piece was used. That would have earned my utmost respect 😉🤣

@tenkuucastle

@tenkuucastle well of COURSE! Lexicographic wouldn't make any sense, would it?
@tenkuucastle i have been stack-oriented my entire life. Housekeepers are my bane.
@tenkuucastle I'm in this picture and I don't like it.

@tenkuucastle

And it's O(1) for insert, O(n) for lookup. Sorting, however, involves an unfortunate O(n^2) complexity (I guess)

@tenkuucastle Your house is the result of a Lotus Notes full text query?
@tenkuucastle be careful. my house failed because it was trying to keep track of access time
@tenkuucastle omg is there a diagram of people who sort files a certain way and what their desk/room/house looks like???

But what is your cache eviction policy? Least Recently Used?

@tenkuucastle

@tenkuucastle this is such an awesome description of how my house is ‘organised’!

@tenkuucastle
My apartment space is waaaay inferior to my computer space. When I need more storage space, I just buy a new HDD for my NAS or another external SSD for my laptop.

But this does not work with a building where you only own one apartment (that was bought for you by your mom as part of the later heritage, because you have not enough money, which is also the reason that you cannot buy nor rent other parts of the house to expand the storage space you need). 🤷🏻‍♀️

@tenkuucastle @hotkey
It still might be worth a defrag. It would be fun to see you move boxes around.
@tenkuucastle every time I clean up I lose shit!
@gretared @tenkuucastle Every time I have to clean up, I lose my shit.

I keep my ingredients in my cupboards like this. Most recently used to the front 😅

The Noguchi Filing System Keeps Paper Documents Organized On Its Own

As much as many of us would love to go paperless, it's just not possible for everyone. For those of us still struggling with paper files, the Noguchi

Second time I’m saying this today:

… I’m in this post and I don’t like it.

@tenkuucastle

The Archaeological Sort, the deeper it is then the older it is.

@tenkuucastle
Or as I like to tell my wife, my office is not a mess, it's optimized for the O() costs of insert, not search :)
@tenkuucastle I will look at the children's rooms different now.

@tenkuucastle For children's room doors / für Kinderzimmertüren:

My room isn’t messy, it’s just sorted by Date Last Modified.

@tenkuucastle There is no chaos, it is just a system whose systematic I have not yet recognized.
@tenkuucastle My apartment is organized chaos.

Owner won't approve renovation cost, $4,000+. So there's stuff to donate, recycle, store (rental), trash, or keep. Goal is reduce 2-bedroom stuff to 1-bedroom stuff.

@tenkuucastle

brb. Need to hang that printed in the kitchen.

@mvsde

@tenkuucastle My brother the ecologist used to say that he used the geological method of filing.
@tenkuucastle that's how I order file folders. Drives people crazy but it works well once you try it for a while.
@poindexter @tenkuucastle I save a lot of photos to my computer related to projects I am working on and looking or searching through them in "reverse chronological order" to find something I remember from earlier is thousands of times more efficient than alphabetically by file name.
@Urban_Hermit @tenkuucastle I kept Picasa around just for the timeline feature - that ended up being much more useful than searching by subject.
@tenkuucastle The bottle said “Shake before serving…” well, since it was a open house party… 🤷🏻‍♂️
@tenkuucastle I need this on one of those farmhouse home signs.
@tenkuucastle This is indeed my official storage method!
