I've been told that I'll be required to return to the office several days a week starting this month.

I have a vulnerable partner who would likely not survive #covid. I am fighting this but it would be irresponsible of me to not start interviewing.

If you have a remote data engineering or architect opportunity, preferably Senior to Principal level, I can provide my resume. I have a ton of #Snowflake and #SQLServer experience as well as over a decade building in #AWS.

#fedihire #fedihired #getfedihired

The response has been fairly overwhelming so far.

I'm in shock to a degree. Thank you.

@bflipp Good luck and good on you for standing your ground. I jumped when they tried to force me back in, too. Different department doing the same gig for more money. Plenty of jobs out there, screw 'em.

@bflipp
I likewise held my ground against RTO policy, and due to my good fortune of having
1) company tenure
2) senior-level experience in a niche field in high demand,
3) sympathetic direct-report managers, &
4) remote hire coworkers to serve as precedent,

...I was grudgingly granted permanent remote status. The remote jobs are out there. Best of luck.

@bflipp If you’re in Atlanta, Chicago, LA, Seattle, Istanbul, Mexico City or Toronto, Gusto is hiring for a bunch of different roles. If you're in NYC, Denver or SF, you're expected to be in the office 2 days a week, but it's pretty easy to get exceptions. If you find one you'd be interested in, I'd be happy to put you in as a referral! https://gusto.com/about/careers/join-the-team

@bflipp you might try canva.com, they’re remote friendly, use aws extensively and use snowflake (or at least, used to). It was a great place to work when I was there.

They’re adding lots of international offices, but used to do a lot of their engineering in Australia, so it’d be worth verifying if remote from your timezone is fine for whichever team you apply for.

@bflipp Doesn't "several" days of the week just mean all of them, including the weekend?

@bflipp

I understand your concern about protecting your partner's health with the return to office requirement. This can be a stressful situation. Your partner's wellbeing is the priority here.

Before considering resignation, I recommend having an open dialogue with HR to request accommodations under the ADA. (1/4)

@bflipp

Highlight your partner's high-risk medical status and provide supporting medical documentation from their physician. Emphasize that you've successfully maintained performance remotely. There may be flexibility if the company works through the interactive ADA process.

If remote work isn't immediately feasible, discuss with HR alternative safety measures or a gradual return to the office that could mitigate risk. (2/4)

@bflipp

Also, make sure you're informed about any updates to your company's remote work policy, as this could affect your discussions.

If they deny accommodations, request a written statement detailing their reasons. This will support an ADA complaint or consultation with an employment lawyer if needed.

(3/4)

@bflipp

Discreetly look into jobs offering remote work, as they can be a fallback option if your current employer won't provide accommodations. First focus efforts on asserting your ADA rights, as the outcome depends on your employer's policies and response.

Remember, this situation can be emotionally taxing, so consider seeking support from professional counselors or support groups. They can offer both practical advice and emotional support to help you navigate this challenging time.

(4/4)

@bflipp sorry to hear about that. Could you ping me your LinkedIn to get in touch? My team is actively hiring DEs.

@bflipp just seeing your timeline, and the thoughts about branding - there's a business opportunity there.

What if you've reached out to a half dozen brands that are pumping their Mastodon presences on to random volunteer run instances, and pitch either the idea of hosting of us bespoke one for them (as a service? as an actual employee?) or, better yet, developed a domain like brands.social where you could do a SaaS thing where the whole business model is selling verification and support?

@mrzaius I have considered something like this off and on and in the past I have ran private cloud infrastructure on contract (I have my own company already) but it burned me out. It did not pay enough that I could quit my day job and it stole all my free time.
@bflipp We've got an open position for a junior and a director position... maybe not something in the middle like you need but check out https://boards.greenhouse.io/arine
Arine

Based in San Francisco, Arine Inc. is a rapidly growing healthcare technology and clinical services company with a mission to ensure that individuals receive the safest and most effective treatment for their unique and evolving healthcare needs. Non-optimized medication therapy results in more than $520 billion of waste, avoidable harm and hospitalizations each year.  Arine solves these issues through our software platform, combining data science and clinical expertise to develop personalized care plans for patients and their care teams.  Arine works with leading healthcare organizations to provide and facilitate clinical interventions that have resulted in significant health improvement for patients.

@bflipp I'm so sorry to hear this. Other employers have worked with some caregivers and/or partners to keep working from home even after these policies are implemented. My caregiver, who lives upstairs and shares air all the time with me, has such an arrangement with his company. If you could use tips on wording a request or getting something like this, DM me and I can connect you. He's also in HR, so he knows the ins and outs from their perspective.

@VaylLarkinPoet I am trying to just have a conversation first. I've made my request, my boss and her boss in the C-Suite support me. Its up to the owners to make the call. I'm a valuable employee, I've won awards there, I believe I'm well liked by most.

I do not feel the need to push very hard as I am hopeful I can just find other "remote first" work where it will never even come up if the answer from ownership is "no."

@bflipp we’ve got a bunch of open roles at Stitch Fix. Nothing directly in data at the moment, but if you see anything that tickles your fancy, I’m happy to give you a referral.

We’re all 99% remote.

@bflipp We’re looking for a few folks at that level to help build out projects involving AWS, Python, SQL, data visualization, machine learning, etc. We work in the legal space, so projects are often related to investigations, compliance, litigations, etc. We’re 100% remote and will stay that way. Happy to chat further if you like, and good luck!
@marknoel Sounds interesting! Would love to hear more about the work and platform/tools you're using.

It never fails to amaze me people look for jobs and don't mention which continent they'd consider relocating to.

@bflipp

@dj3ei @bflipp He is obviously looking for a job where no office presence (and hence no relocation) is required.

Ooops... Good point.

But then (to my rescue), there is also time zones. Online meetings during office hours in which time zones would one be willing to accommodate?

@virbonus @bflipp

@bflipp maybe you could create an avatar robot at work and just remote into him from home? #future

@bflipp my company might be interested, we're doing (among other things) analysis of satellite pictures looking for irrigation anomalies.

WFH is completely at discretion of employees, and the leadership does not want to change that (because our office is a three-story building surrounded by skyscrapers).

Downside is that for legal reasons all employees must live in the Kanto region.

@bflipp Boosted. Everything you’ve posted about your job to date sounds like they suck. This proves it. Good luck on the search.

@bflipp A few possibilities for snowflake:

https://hnjobs.emilburzo.com/#snowflake

That site searches the most recent HN "Who is hiring?" thread. No recruiters, and most jobs are posted by devs or managers, so, no HR corporate blurb. So much more restful than LinkedIn. =:)

@bflipp GRRR, I am so angry for you, what inconsiderate fools your management team are.

I won't ever go into an office again, and I don't have a good reason like you do, except my productivity and mental health.

Acquiring and keeping good technical workers is so hard - why would you alienate a good worker by trying to kill their partner?

Fuck them!

@bflipp obviously a hard call to make but never underestimate the power of a simple, unembellished, "no". No reasons, no explanations, no entreaties.
@bflipp I don't know about local laws if this is even possible. Hopefully your workplace will consider you as a carer of a vulnerable person and consider 100% remote work a reasonable adjustment. Hopefully they'll have to take 'reasonable steps' to accommodate you.
A lot of disabled people everywhere are fighting forced return to offices after companies showing it can be done.

@bflipp
I was in exactly the same position. My solution was to get a formal letter from my partner's specialist physician stating that she is at high risk and they recommend that I keep working from home.

That worked, but I also started looking for new work at the same time.
