So numerous brands are giving up on Threads by Instagram, allegedly due to lack of engagement 😂 BBC Gives Up On Threads (By Instagram), Sticks With Mastodon https://darnell.day/bbc-gives-up-on-threads-by-instagram-sticks-with-mastodon Instead of simply adding a link option to Instagram, Meta decided to create a new app that collects user data. This move by BBC tells you how good Mastodon is right now.

@nixCraft

Threads is pretty dead when I log into it.
@nixCraft Thread was a stupid idea from the start, it didn't offer anything new, Twitter is still a much better option than thread.
@nixCraft everyone be sure to follow and engage! 👉 @BBCRD @BBC_News_Labs @BBC5Live @BBCRadio4

@dave @nixCraft @BBCRD @BBC_News_Labs @BBC5Live @BBCRadio4 threads has no real features that allowed user engagement.

I welcome competition even as bad as it was with user data. It's healthy for the internet in general to have options.

That said. What a poorly thought out plan from the get go. Not allowing basic features like being able to look at hashtags or trending topics was such a waste.
Among other things. They aren't new to the space, they should have known better

@dave @BBCRadio4 @LillianVS @nixCraft @BBCRD @BBC5Live @BBC_News_Labs if I’m not mistaken, once you signed up your insta acc was tied to threads permanently?
@dave @nixCraft @BBCRD @BBC_News_Labs @BBC5Live @BBCRadio4 This highlights a big problem with mastodon, the terrible search results. Searching for "BBC News" or "BBCNews" only results in bot accounts that aren't affiliated with the bbc. Unless you already know the name of an account there's no easy way of finding it.

@geoffl
That's silly. Does it show up at all?
I can see it, but still buried way down.

If you can see it then this sounds like a good idea: https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/discussions/21045

Feature: Show first verified URL in people search · mastodon/mastodon · Discussion #21045

Type a famous person in search, and try to find which one is which? I suggest to change it to this: Notice "hypercritical.co", I mocked it to here: Take first verified URL from user profile and sho...

@dave Once I followed the accounts they show up at the top. Previously they didn't show up in the dynamically loaded suggested search results but did after I hit the return/enter key, but not at the top, still under the non-official accounts. (this was on the app)
@geoffl okay, yeah sounds like goofy sorting then. Hopefully https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/discussions/21045 will get some traction 🤞🏻

@nixCraft And nothing of value was lost
@nixCraft @timrichards there’s so many people writing essays in their Instagram captions so people are clearly not adverse to text based Instagram run platforms. They could have easily done well with a great Twitter alternative but they failed
@joannaholman @nixCraft Having it be algorithm-only is the kiss of death IMO

@nixCraft I noticed so many accounts with posts from months ago. Who post daily on IG.

Wonder if keeping large parts of Europe out is one reason of low engagement.

@nixCraft a bunch of vergey dweebs threw tomatoes at me for saying it a week after launch, but it’s so clear that threads completely biffed it. musk gave them a golden opportunity but they really needed to replicate the twitter experience 1:1 to retain any significant share of those immediate 10m users. instead zuck said they’re anti-journalist and just want to be a “positive vibes” space…which may have worked in like 2014, but man, who but rich tech bros lives in that world anymore?
@nixCraft probably because they haven't oosted in almost 2 months...

@nixCraft rarely agree with #BNC but if they with paid full-time social media editors do that, then it's not worth the time and effort needed.

Let's see how fast @dw_innovation can get @dwnews to move to  /  .

Considering how fast   went  and even @antidiskriminierung giving up on it, that's likely only a matter if time.

@nixCraft Its all so silly because from the amount of people writing extended captions on their instagram pics and videos its clear people wanted more text options inside instagram itself and yet they built threads
@nixCraft I wonder how the people who migrated their insta over & can no longer revert it back to what it was are feeling right now?
@nixCraft well, now we wait for RTÉ to do the same.
