every woman in academia needs to stop and read this 2021 profile of Katalin Karikó. it’s enraging and inspiring all at once.

and every man should read it for a very simple reason:

🗣 THIS IS WHAT A REAL GENIUS LOOKS LIKE

not Jobs.
not Musk.
not Zuckerberg.

not 99.99% of the Silicon Valley conartists calling themselves geniuses.

no.

it’s this middle-aged mother who works at a lab.

Messenger RNA vaccine pioneer Katalin Karikó shares her long journey to Covid-19 vaccines

"I'm not a very emotional person, but I just cried a little,” Katalin Karikó of BioNTech said of the health workers who clapped for her after she got the Covid vaccine she had a hand in developing.

STAT

one of the unsung heroes in the Katalin Karikó story is her husband, Béla Francia, who believed his wife in spite of NIH denying her funding for decades and UPenn tenure because they couldn't believe her genius

just as men need a good spouse to be great; so do women.

we need more men who will validate their wives' life purpose and support them in manifesting their genius.

NORMALIZE WOMEN GENIUSES and the people who love them because they believe in them

#NobelPrize #feminism

BTW

do not let #UPenn brag about #KatalinKarikó

when was the last time you saw a male ADJUNCT ASSISTANT professor win a #NobelPrize?

denying her tenure & demoting her is how universities commonly commit #WageTheft by withholding :

— hundreds of thousands in pay equity

— tens of thousands in comprehensive health care

— tens of thousands in retirement / pension money

— tens of thousands of dollars in sick day, vacation & sabbatical equity

#UPenn owes Karikó MILLIONS for her work

@blogdiva okay fine, it’s impressive. But your ‘not’s’ are just silly.
@JonnyBlueApple @blogdiva how wasteful is a company like meta? How fake is the myth that musk is a genius? Can I laugh at the apple fan boys (and elderly)?
@blogdiva @Cdespinosa Most of us read this thanks to a device that wouldn‘t exist without Steve Jobs. Acknowledging a man’s achievement takes nothing away from women’s great achievements. There‘s room enough for many great humans on this planet.

@dgavin @Cdespinosa you're so off, it's not even funny. i hate that Silicon Valley's war against history works on so many willfully ignorant rubes:

The Brief History of Smartphones

You Might Be Surprised to Learn Who Invented Smartphones

The first device that technically qualifies as a smartphone was a sophisticated brick phone and surprisingly, it wasn't invented by Apple.

Adding into a thread about an amazing woman's achievement to make sure everyone knows that a man did something too is not needed.

We ALL know Steve Jobs did stuff, but we are learning about Katalin, so maybe just once, you don't need to reply to make sure men weren't forgotten?

Let women have their own moment my dude.

@dgavin @blogdiva @Cdespinosa steve jobs is a salesman.

Maybe some love for the woz, especially because he isnt completely full of himself and still(to my recollection) does stuff for kids in education?

@dgavin @blogdiva @Cdespinosa Jobs was ignorant about science and technology. He was a showman, a borrower of other people's ideas, and, yes, someone gifted at marketing. There's very little of any consequence that wouldn't exist but for Apple.
@samueljohnson Hi, Sam, I can say a lot about Steve, but “ignorant about science and technology” is pretty laughably false.
@samueljohnson @blogdiva @Cdespinosa I’ve been waiting a long time for the perfect moment to place this. You totally deserve it, congratulations.
@dgavin @blogdiva @Cdespinosa You're now muted without my watching the video you took so long to come up with. Bye.
@blogdiva the amounts of discouragements and blockades she slogged thru during her career to get to that vital moment

@blogdiva I’m very grateful to her for her part in developing the mRNA technology that may have saved my life recently, and has certainly saved many, many others. 🙏🙏🙏

(BTW, a gold medal from the Nobel Prize, plus her daughter’s two Olympic gold medals = extra wow! 🥇🥇🥇)

@blogdiva the hero we need but don't deserve

@blogdiva I purchased multiple copies of her autobiography “Breaking Through: My Life in Science” as soon as it was rea released and gave them to friends and relatives as gifts. It is a wonderful read.
