Speaking of

@hacks4pancakes grandma accidentally put the settings there, and now can't figure out how to move them off.

Her home screen looks like literally every app she's installed, in order 😆

@hacks4pancakes the dock is prime real estate. Both passively leaving Safari AND actively adding Settings there makes me wonder what this smartphone regular usage looks like.
My SO is an avid smartphone web browser user… her Safari icon is tucked away in a folder on her second screen.
I’ll put my money on Linda uses Safari to access Xitter web interface.
@fabrice @hacks4pancakes Like a lot of work phones, the use case is probably "hugely expensive 2FA device."
@hacks4pancakes facebook and instagram are on there

@hacks4pancakes
Objectively, the CEO of a company doesn’t need to use the product too often, that’s not their role? Using the product takes up so much time too. But not having it at all, that’s special.

As for the settings app, one use case would be to toggle advertising her number when she places a regular call.

@GuillaumeRossolini sure but she uses Facebook and Instagram
@hacks4pancakes I can understand wanting to keep an eye on the competition, but yeah the general picture looks weird
@hacks4pancakes funny enough settings is the only thing i have in the dock
@hacks4pancakes Is the pic actually new or maybe from the time before she came to twitter?
@hacks4pancakes Mail in the dock, Gmail on the desktop. I'm not well-versed in iOS, but can't Mail do Gmail?
@screambiogenesis @hacks4pancakes yes
I use Mail for work email and Gmail for personal.
Making sure to never cross the streams.
@winkleink @hacks4pancakes Ah sure, that makes sense. I’ve always been a “completely separate phones” kind of guy, so I didn’t think of it that way.
@hacks4pancakes Noting to myself to never let anyone see my home screen
@hacks4pancakes and either really like notification badges or doesn’t know how to remove them.
Also, bad at responding to messages.

@hacks4pancakes

I have settings in the dock cuz apple doesnt have a nice way to get to it...

WTH

@dustinfinn I’m sorry but very bad vibes, why do you need to change your Wi-Fi settings so much 😅

@hacks4pancakes

I am definitely not gonna understand this much ...

but when apple stopped the behavior from the control screen to turn off BT and WiFi - so now you have to do it in the settings screen - I just want to move to settings quick.

I dunno... I really didnt see this as being bad.

I for sure need some more insight...

@dustinfinn it’s right here
@dustinfinn swipe your finger top right to bottom left

@hacks4pancakes

The WiFi and BT icons under the Airplane and Cellular icon do not turn off BT and WiFi.

It just disconnects.

I need to see if I am misunderstanding a shortcut swipe - swiping at all from top right down brings up the control center in your photo.

@dustinfinn sure, just not sure why you would ever realistically need to turn them off all the way (airplane mode on control center does shut off everything)
@dustinfinn if you want to turn them off all the way you can just hold press on control center too. Never a need for the setting icon for it.

@hacks4pancakes

wowza I am feeling really dense..

I must have something set up differently and I need to check.

hitting Airplane mode - leaves BT and WiFi on and connected.

hitting BT and WiFi icons in control center leave WiFi and BT on, just not connected to current WiFi.

Holding them down brings up WiFi and BT connections - but I still dont see a way to turn it off...

@dustinfinn hold press on Wi-Fi. Hold press on Wi-Fi again. I am on a plane and I can’t take a video, I’m really sorry. By default, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth shut off in airplane mode but you can change that.

@hacks4pancakes

I greatly appreciate your back and forth with me - so I will go back through settings and see - I am not getting that behavior so I'll have to see where I am totally missing this.

@hacks4pancakes I must not have that setup then. I’ll have to find it.

@hacks4pancakes

Nothing I see in control center turns it off.

And if I want to avoid anything with any and WiFi being active - I generally want it Off and not disconnected.

And after what I experienced with people spamming the BT stuff - I’ve pretty much wanted to turn things off.

@dustinfinn I promise promise promise the second long press on control center brings you to the shutoff option. It’s impossible to reconfigure that.
@dustinfinn it’s in your video at the bottom of the menu. Takes you directly to the off setting

@hacks4pancakes

got it - knew I was being dense a bit...

so - a swipe and a few strokes more than just having access to settings in the bottom dock.

i get it.

@dustinfinn sure, but only if there’s nothing more important to have in your dock, like messages, calls, signal, email…

@hacks4pancakes yep. Understood for sure.

Phone / messages / mail / settings

Maybe I move settings now :)

Join the cool folks :) (lol - kidding)

Safe travels !

@hacks4pancakes @dustinfinn

Yep Lesley is absolutely correct.

Swiping diagonally starting at the top right moving down to the left will bring up the task screen. Easy peasy.

@dustinfinn @hacks4pancakes My Bluetooth headset disconnects from my phone when there's "enough" audio from my PC...forcing reconnection through Settings is faster (fewer long-clicks) than through Control Center.

I end up doing a lot of other things in Settings frequently, so, yeah, Settings is in my dock. Apparently this even alienates my wife... 👀

@jima @dustinfinn y’all are 💯💯💯cursed image 💯💯🤷🏻‍♀️🍸

@hacks4pancakes @jima

I think this is a failure to "adapt" on my side - like - this is the way I operate - I dont need more things to change my operation of something...

but after Apple changed iOS controls in that control center - I refused also to think that theyre off until I break into the settings and toggle that switch :)

@dustinfinn @hacks4pancakes The change in behavior of the WiFi toggle in Control Center is an example of part of why tech people have trust issues.

@jima @hacks4pancakes

its a little deeper rooted than just apples changing a control center action :)

@hacks4pancakes Her only Home Screen news apps are the New York Post and the Babylon Bee, FFS?
@hacks4pancakes what is in the dock? I see phone and camera. That is reasonable. What are the other two?
@sqgl safari which is understandable, then phone settings 🤷🏻‍♀️🍸
@hacks4pancakes Maybe he meant that having the phone settings icon/shortcut in the dock is "wild" because who accesses settings everyday except for a hardcore tinkerer? Muskovites aren't so good at expressing themselves.
@sqgl I absolutely agree which is why I reposted it, it’s cursed
@hacks4pancakes wtf?! I have settings in the dock on every iPhone since you could edit the dock 🙈
