Went to the Apple Store today to check out the cases. Most of the FineWoven ones were covered in finger scratches.

Everyone wants to check the same thing…

Something tells me that they are going to rotate the sample cases often.

@chockenberry this occurred to me too. I wonder if the frequent case rotations and the (I assume) higher rate of returns will wash out any climate benefit from moving away from leather. I hope Apple goes back to the drawing board next year because FineWoven is not it.
@MacDevil @chockenberry if you really wonder about this, you’re underestimating the climate impact of the leather industry.
@chockenberry I think FineWoven is a dud >_>
@chockenberry Heading to my store tomorrow to check the same thing when I pickup my phone. Sounds like I need not waste my time looking at the fine woven.
@chockenberry I did the same in Japan yesterday. Not a single scratch to see. They all looked splendid. Something tells me that a) Japanese people don’t read The Verge or b) people in Japan are more respectful. Can also be both 😜
@chockenberry same thing happened to me yesterday. I could tell after touching it that it wasn’t for me but I could tell a lot of the scratches were very intentional. 🤷‍♂️
@chockenberry you can see the same thing at a Sperry store with the natural leather shoes. I wear sperrys for years and never get scrathes like that. The material may hold up fine to normal use, just not to targeted abuse.
@chockenberry The outside of the silicone cases start tearing within the first year. I feel like the soft goods team needs to come up with some more durable materials if they want to project a corporate green image.
@chockenberry earlier today at the Boylston St. Apple store in Boston.

@cdmoomaw @chockenberry

Do they still sell the silicone case? It isn’t leather…

Don’t all of the Apple brand cases have a plastic shell and the leather or fine woven nonsense is just another layer?

@cdmoomaw @chockenberry Guessing they will be yanked from displays relatively soon.
@cdmoomaw @chockenberry The main difference being that scratches on a leather case will slowly fade but these ones won’t, correct?
@ryanchristensen @chockenberry These cases seem to become scuffed and scratched much more readily than other case styles. Time will tell whether or not said scuffs and scratches will age gracefully, but initial impressions do not seem hopeful.

Attached: 1 image Still decided to give the FineWoven case a fair try. Went out for dinner with friends last night and set my phone on the table. Like I have done HUNDREDS of times since 2008. Woke up this morning with a stain on the FineWoven case. 😑 I honestly think this is the worst accessory Apple's ever produced and I may just throw this out now. (Great for the environment!)

@cdmoomaw @chockenberry FineWovenGate just waiting to happen. Wonder if there’ll be a support document soon to instruct customers how to get rid of the scratches. Or maybe a sock to protect the case.
@cdmoomaw @chockenberry There’s no way they can keep selling these things.
@cdmoomaw @chockenberry Get serious people. If you scratch your nails over a leather case it has exactly the same indelible marks. I have two leather cases to prove it. That’s why you don’t do it, especially on a case that’s not yours.
@cdmoomaw @chockenberry
I’ll miss this when I upgrade…
@bgrinter @cdmoomaw @chockenberry apple leather cases had a very thin layer of plastic outside the leather. When it broke it looked horrific cos then youd discover the leather was of low quality. I got a case from bullstrap which is much nicer than previous yellow apple case which turned red on the corners over time. Bullstrap patinas more evenly and naturally but im back to silicon now cos its much grippier
@cdmoomaw @chockenberry unfortunately, this probably isn’t the first time things have been vandalized.
@chockenberry this doesn't look that bad. I think there are a bunch of whiners.... who can go buy the silicone or someone else's case. But I gotta imagine this looks different day to day in real use, and yes, my nails, or keys or lack thereof can make an impression. Whatever.

@chockenberry I just can’t stop laughing at the verge thinking that patinated fabric is not a thing. It’s not even just an oilcloth and waxed canvas thing.

Will FineWoven wear nicely? No one outside Apple knows. But those first few scratches on a fresh leather satchel look terrible.

@chockenberry I kinda like mine. It’s really hard to take off, and the port holes aren’t quite aligned perfectly, but I really like the feel of it in my hand, and the buttons feel great!
@chockenberry @craiggrannell They’ve obviously tested this internally, and seen how it reacts. It’s mindnumbing to imagine that they would actually start selling something like this. If they sold it for 10 bucks, then maybe.
@chockenberry all of this will end with a product recall from 
@chockenberry How did this not come up within the various staffed sub-orgs at Apple? Doesn't feel like "There are a thousand no's for every yes" is still a thing when it comes to this new case.
@chockenberry I’m sure it’s also a “fun” thing for buttholes who want to protest Apple’s decision to ditch cow to do.
