Hey cool kids of Mastodon, let's make #WoodlandWednesday a thing and share all our favourite photos of trees!

I heart trees!

This is from the Puck's Glen walk in the #CowalPeninsula in #Scotland. A beautiful place.

@louisa_ Here's a weeping beech tree near Rochester, NY
@old_hippie Gorgeous! That dappled sunlight through the leaves 😍
@louisa_ Down for this! #WoodlandWednesday This is an old one from 2017. Land I was able to visit daily back then but can't anymore. I'm trying to be happy for the opportunity even though inside I want to cry because I miss it. #trees #sunrise #GardenState

@amberlove Oh that's a lovely pic.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels that way about certain trees but sad that you can't visit it any more. Hopefully you'll get to hug it again some day soon.

@louisa_
Great idea to foster #WoodlandWednesday.
Here’s some rapidly growing new alder woodland, with a backdrop of mature birch.

@felicitymartin baby trees! Great pic! Is that near you in Scotland?

We'll be up there in a few weeks - we haven't planned anything yet but I think I might plan to trip to maximise trees. Do you have any favourite woodlands?

@louisa_
I live in “Perthshire Big Tree Country”, about an hour’s drive north of Edinburgh and Glasgow. Dunkeld (15 miles N of Perth) is a great place for trees and woodlands (visit the Hermitage and walk up the River Tay beyond the ruined Cathedral). Also Blair Castle grounds at Blair Atholl, another 20 miles N. Both areas were ‘enhanced’ from the 1700s with European larch then North American species by the Dukes of Atholl. There are also plenty of natural oak and birch woods.

@felicitymartin Oh we've been through there a few times (the good ol' A9!) and been to Aberfeldy, Pitlochry & the forest around Loch Tummel a few times but not to Dunkeld itself.

I see from google maps there's a noteworthy oak... I'll put it on my list to visit next time we're in the area, and Blair Atholl too.

Thanks for the recommendations 😀

@louisa_
Yes, to see the Birnam Oak walk down the lane to the right of the Birnam Hotel then go a short distance left along the riverbank path. An equally large but younger sycamore is just beyond. It’s pleasant walking the path upriver, under the stone bridge (or steps up onto it). 1/2
@louisa_
The path passes some fine trees and bends left up the River Braan, a tributary of the Tay. When you reach the A9 you can go left to return to the start or turn right over a footbridge towards Inver an the Hermitage. See https://www.pkc.gov.uk/article/15367/Dunkeld-path-network for a downloadable walks leaflet.

@bradpatrick @felicitymartin Lovely! I thought the blue patches of colour were flowers at first before I realised it was reflections in the water -- I suspect the same thing would have happened in person too. I'm the sort of person who regularly ends up wandering into ponds!
@louisa_ this is at Britzer Garten in Berlin Germany i Hope those count as trees
@Yaminosenshi they're great trees! Are they a type of Wisteria?
@louisa_ Fully in favour of #WoodlandWednesday, to go with #ThickTrunkTuesday
I have this photo as the wallpaper on my phone. It's a path through a larch plantation between Trenchford and Tottiford Reservoirs on the eastern edge of #dartmoor

@Devonkiwi That's a great pic - I bet the dogs love it there. There is very much a "come onnnnnn" vibe coming from the pup looking at the camera!

(I post ThickTrunk pics sometimes too but I think we should celebrate all tree, not just the chunky boys!)

@louisa_ I heart trees too. Here is one for #woodlandwednesday which I assume is for any forest pics?

#mushtodon #sporespondence

@lifewithtrees ooh gorgeous! I love how the polypores are highlighted by the sun 😍
@louisa_ wow what a beautiful picture!😍
@louisa_ Great idea! Here's my piece of #woodlandwednesday from Czechia. 💚
@psychoklara gorgeous! I want to follow that path!
@louisa_ no problem. You can't get lost, just follow the track
...through rocks...
...through deep, cold and magical valley...
...through the greenest forest...
...to a forest pub and get a beer. This is how we live here. Cheers! 🍻😀
#woodlandwednesday
@psychoklara oh that sounds heavenly! I must visit those forests some day...
@louisa_ @psychoklara #woodlandwednesday :-) photo from this saturday, in forests west of Prague
@louisa_ Hanko, Finland.

@christaelena oh my 😍 How did you get a picture of heaven??

Finland is on my must-visit list. It seems like it has an excellent humans-to-trees ratio!

@louisa_
I just got home from a walk
@76katriina Big tree! Looks like a lovely day for a walk. Hope you enjoyed!
@louisa_
We really did, had lovely sunny and warm day even tjo it was pretty windy by the sea
@louisa_ Great idea. Here's one from our dog walk a couple of days ago. This is taken in Broadstone park, Dorset, UK. Bonus spaniel also in pic. #WoodlandWednesday
@BonehouseWasps Perfect spaniel stomping ground! I bet they love it, don't they? Is there a steam/muddy puddle for dunking too?
@louisa_ He loves it because there's a huge open field where he can chase the crows, who taunt him mercilessly - flying just put of reach. 😁 Then a cooler walk in the woods to cool down a bit when it's hot as today. No stream at this one. Might do the stream this evening though. 😁

@BonehouseWasps that sounds like a perfect combo for a spaniel!

The crows near our last house used to do that to our old springer too. She never stood a chance of catching them so I'm sure they were just having fun. They once lured her into a muddy bog - or that was her excuse anyway 😆

@louisa_ A lovely example of a temperate rainforest, a biome that covers less than 1% of the UK
@louisa_
#WoodlandWednesday I like this idea. This trail begins near my home that leads into an urban forested wetlands.

@Krosen_nw lovely! And accessible too.

Is that a recent photo? Have the leaves started to drop already?

@louisa_ Yes we are having some very cool mornings and autumn is in the air.
@louisa_
Great idea Louisa. I like #WoodlandWednesday
@Petprez fantastic angle! It makes me feel dizzy in a good way!
@Petprez @louisa_ Why not 😉

@daycoder @TCMuffin Mmm moss! I love the contrast between the green and the leaf litter.
@louisa_ that looks like a wonderful place for a walk.
@louisa_ I heart trees as well! #WoodlandWednesday
@friscolala that looks like a fun path to follow!
@louisa_ It is - One of our precious urban forest areas. It climbs up the mountain and opens up to a beautiful vista - with bonus @SutroTower over on Twin Peaks!
@friscolala @louisa_ one of the best hikes imho
@SutroTower @friscolala I think you might be a smidge biased, Sutro, but you look cool so I'll let it slide THIS TIME.
@louisa_ some happy trees on the edge of the Salish Sea in Washington state!
@KenzoFKC They're in a great spot - I'm envious! I'm hoping to visit Vancouver Island next year - I'll bring some reallllllllly powerful binoculars and see if I can see them across the water 😆
@louisa_
Paging @Rachelburch as many of your lovely photos fit the hashtag #WoodlandWednesday 💚
@louisa_ I could get on board with this. Here's a shot of a path heading into a stand of redwoods not too far inland from California's central coast. #woodlandwednesday
