@cstross

Note to self: don't eat grass in Australia.

@Yeekasoose @cstross Hey, the plants have always been out to kill you here in Australia (or make you wish you were dead - see gympie gympie tree)

@ariaflame @Yeekasoose @cstross I thought stuff like that only existed in science fiction as part of some dangerous alien flora but nature never fails to surprise

(I horrified all my friends with its wikipedia article so thank you very much)

@mmby @Yeekasoose @cstross There is some freaky shit out there.
@cstross close to home, that’s one of my local hospitals!
@cstross No reason to panic, I am sure that was just a one-time anomaly. No reason to ask for scans for your various leaders in government for potential brain worm infestation. Everyone should just wait until next Spring when our numbers are sufficient to infect the rest of the populace...errr...umm... Forget what I said. Everything is fine...
@cstross But it's Australia, so not totally unexpected. All the animals try to kill you there. They're just coming up with new and inventive ways to do it.
@cstross a no-shit brain worm? so it's like those eyelash mites that don't have a butthole?
@hakirsch @cstross Great, now I can’t stop blinking.
@cstross people keep telling each other to touch grass but this is what happens when you do.
@cstross So much for touching grass.
@cstross not what do see as I am trying to get it together for breakfast
@cstross What, no Invader Zim references yet? https://youtu.be/o4OQmGJT3Hs?si=YUKSFRoDhEwD7tVm
HAVE YOU THE BRAIN WORMS?

YouTube
@cstross Well that's horrific. I hope the neurosurgeon is getting all the PTSD support I'd definitely need.
@cstross And me not yet having had breakfast. Thanks Charlie.
@cstross “That poor patient, (…) You don’t want to be the first patient in the world with a roundworm found in pythons” … No, no you do not. Nightmare fuel, thanks.
@cstross the Decade of the disasters strikes again! Who will survive the 2020's?

@cstross
Oh, the worms have been around for a while, although different species.

Pork tapeworm is one of the most common worms that invades the brain. Neurocysticercosis is the name for that, and it occurs around the world -- has for centuries, and is why eating uncooked pork is a very bad idea.

Then there is the delightful rat lungworm that is present in many places in the US, including Hawaii: https://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2017/04/when-globalization-brings-brain-invading-worms/522153/

Brain Worms: Rat Lungworm Disease Is Spreading

The parasite that causes rat lungworm disease is now endemic in the southeastern United States, and it’s expected to spread northward.

I... I... Just wanted to say: Too Much Information.

The Universe is a cold and hateful place, and I am going to stand in a corner and hide under a blanket for a while.
