Ugly Numbers from Microsoft and ChatGPT Reveal that AI Demand is Already Shrinking

The only areas where AI is flourishing are shamming, spamming & scamming

The Honest Broker
@baldur well, got an impression that the public sector just started picking it up, and amount of moot pitches was just increasing. But yeah, let's just wait for yet, another year and see.
@baldur honestly surprised at this. It's a good thing, but most of the risks are still very serious. A lot of the abuses are non-public-facing.
@baldur Now I'm wondering how on earth anyone can use ChatGPT as a coaster.
@baldur @randomgeek this is my shocked face…

@markgdavis @baldur unconvincing. Let's have midjourney render a few hundred expressions and pick the most plausible.

Hm

Did you always have seven eyes?

@baldur IMO smaller orgs and individuals just aren't aware of the specialized and highly useful tools beyond ChatGPT; larger orgs are still formulating & deploying their strategies.

People should be getting familiar with the tools *now*.

@baldur speaking with some colleagues who are implementing generative AI stuff (and actually have a decent use case for it IMHO) compared interacting with openAI and other LLM similar to trying to get an 8 year old to do something.

it's amazing when it works, but as a programmer you expect your computer to do what you tell it %100 of the time. Not %40 of the time.

Having followed #OpenAI #ChatGPT since launch my sense remains:

#AI (in current iteration) just a 1/2 dozen #SiliconValley #TechnoFascist billionaires throwing 💩 at wall to see what sticks (standard valley #VC model). Asymmetric leveraging of #Microsoft, #Salesforce, other #BigTech incumbents as “injection distributors" smart.

@baldur I’ve been in the business long enough to remember the first AI Winter (look it up youngsters). #AIWinterII is coming.
@dpw
That's the frustrating thing for those of us interested in this field, this bubble will pop harder than any of the previous ones, and sink any serious AI research for decades, yet I too want it to pop to stop all this hype for these broken toys before they do more damage
@baldur
@jherazob @baldur It will be fine. The current wave of ML application will get assimilated into the mainstream and labels will change. There will always be interesting problems to work on in “general” AI (AGI). The old joke was that we used the label “AI” for the things we didn’t understand. Any thing we understood was labeled “pattern recognition” or something similarly unglamorous. It’s a hype CYCLE, so there will be future ups and downs…

@baldur

That's how people treated Kinect when it first was forced as an accessory for Xbox and now million's have an Alexa at home listening in.

In a couple of years a company like Amazon, will bundle their AI with Alexa or Google will bundle AI with Android or Apple will invent AI making it be all the rage and everyone will use it because it's not Microsoft and it's fashionable as they always do.

@baldur
Most people thought AI was a fun game to play with, and when the novelty wore off, the actual output produced wasn't useful enough to continue.
@baldur Shrinking numbers at Microsoft and OpenAI don't necessarily mean that there is lower demand. It could just be, that they face increasing competition from other players like Anthropic and Google or from open-source, self-hosted models.

@baldur I wouldn't call that ugly. It's almost hope-inspiring.

Mh. Sorry for that burst of euphoria. 🤔

@baldur So the hype is finally cooling down. About time.
@baldur "The only areas where AI is flourishing are shamming, spamming & scamming" Despite that, ChatGPT/AI it is not hated so much as crypto... 🤔 Double standard 🙂

@baldur I wouldn't get your hopes up.

ChatGPT may not amount to much, but this AI direction is likely to upend the widest array of existing arrangements.

It would be like claiming that because some early internet application's popularity was waning that digital wasn't going to catch on.

As to the idea that Americans or their laws can just say no... c'mon, you know that other parts of the world would just go on without us, right?

Sounds like these are actually very lovely numbers.
@baldur At least those were collectible!
