What’s a new or new-to-you app you’re loving and what makes it special?

This is a question for people using apps, not developers - you know where to find me 😉

@caseyliss @johnvoorhees I'll say it since Casey can't... Callsheet!
@mrakes @caseyliss I’m not familiar with it. Do you like this app Casey?
@johnvoorhees @mrakes ★★☆☆☆ dude who wrote it is a dick
@caseyliss @mrakes I downloaded this app and it won’t play any of the shows or movies I search for. 1 star because I can’t give it 0.
@johnvoorhees @mrakes PLUS IT INFRINGES COPYRIGHTS -♾️ STARS
@caseyliss @mrakes Literally the worst ever
@caseyliss @johnvoorhees @mrakes wait where’s the download button for movies I’ve called up?
@caseyliss @johnvoorhees @mrakes you guys have hijacked the conversation…. I love it!
To answer the original question, @sam’s ScreenCred app is a great way to find commonalities for 2 actors, movies, shows etc in tmdb. It’s very handy. And obviously the new hotness, Callsheet gets used daily for me. It was a happy day deleting the IMDb app and learning that ScreenCred exists. 🎊
@caseyliss @johnvoorhees @mrakes The video player in it doesn't even work.
@johnvoorhees gotta be @MonaApp for me. it’s the most feature complete and customizable mastodon client i’ve seen yet

@johnvoorhees the combo of Multitouch and Hyperkey on Mac have been totally game changing for my productivity as of late.

Hyperkey essentially turns your caps lock into a new modifier key, and Multitouch lets you create keyboard and trackpad gesture shortcuts for nearly everything. I can’t imagine going without either now!

@trystan Nice - I know Hyperkey, but haven’t tried Multitouch - I’ll check it out. Thanks
@johnvoorhees I suspect Multitouch doesn’t do anything that BetterTouchTool doesn’t, but it’s much less intimidating to a new user.

@johnvoorhees you know, I really wanted to give a suggestion, but turn out all most of favourite apps I found through you, and the others you’ve already covered.

There’s a compliment in there somewhere, but right now I’m too annoyed by missing this opportunity 🙃

@johnvoorhees I recently started using Peat to encourage some healthy habits. It has a widget that looks like the GitHub.com activity grid which is fun, and the overall design is really simple and appealing.

And (more niche perhaps) Aimchess to get custom chess puzzles and lessons derived from my chess.com games. It’s fun to get a chance to redeem myself by replaying real positions where I blundered and get redemption.

@johnvoorhees MusicSmart and MusicHarbor have been my favorite recent additions. They both supplement Apple Music really well, and MusicSmart in particular scratches my very particular itch to see who was involved in a song or album.
@johnvoorhees I’m digging Paste for Mac right now. Cool to have a bunch pinboards hidden right behind a simple keyboard shortcut.
@johnvoorhees I’ve really been enjoying Life Cycle to keep track of where I’ve been. I like that it gives trends once a week, month, and when I get to it year.
@nlott thanks! I’m not familiar with this app but will look for it.
@johnvoorhees NotePlan I always feel deserves a nod. NotePlan is the only markdown app that has Calendar integration natively included for meeting notes, easy to use time blocking, markdown that is CloudKit synced, and also stores the files in folders like Obsidian.

@johnvoorhees Answering your question: @mattcomi’s TV Forecast. It just clicks with how my brain works.

Honorable mention: @caseyliss’s Callsheet, for exactly the same reason.

Between them, they have markedly improved my TV watching experience.

@johnvoorhees Good question! For me it’s:

Winston for Reddit (currently in beta, uses your own Reddit API key https://lo.cafe/)

WatchTo5K is a fun, if imperfect couch-to-5K app with a watch-first app

Pins for Pinboard is by far the best Pinboard client I’ve used

Callsheet, but you know that one already

lo.cafe

@matt thanks for mentioning Winston, I set it up and it’s working flawlessly. Have been missing Reddit since Apollo.
@1neNOnly It’s pretty good, right?! Not Apollo-good, but feels fresh and fun to me 😃
@matt sure does, I even set it up on my wife’s phone and she’s digging it as well.
@matt @johnvoorhees I don’t see Pins in the App Store. Have a link by any chance?

@johnvoorhees I really like Retro, the “friends-only” photo journal app. I just wish there were more people there.

https://apps.apple.com/app/id6443709020

‎Retro - Feel Good Social

‎Retro is a social app that feels like a joy, not a habit. Here, you’re posting for yourself as much as your friends. It’s a friends-only photo journal that helps you backfill each week with your favorite photos, videos, and screenshots from your camera roll. With just a little time, you can build an…

@johnvoorhees Athlytic, this one is new to myself, since I use an Apple Watch to track my workouts I have no native recovery metrics that help me better understand how hard to push that particular day, not only is previous activity taken into account but also sleep, stress, etc. so far, so good.
@r_df_ng This looks very nice. I'll check it out!
@johnvoorhees Happy Scale has been great for keeping an eye on my weight and motivating me through my weight loss.
@simonbs @johnvoorhees I second Happy Scale. It’s a much more realistic measure of weight over time than raw weight measures since it uses a moving average, but the feedback is instant compared to the once-every-twenty-weeks average that comes with Apple Health.
@JenRogers @simonbs @johnvoorhees I know I’m breaking the rules since it’s not new to me”…but Happy Scale helped me lose over 100 lbs.
@johnvoorhees I’ve just adopted @albumstheapp for my listening purposes. The queue management is a bit esoteric and it sometimes loses my position between sessions, but I do love it! The album focus is much more ‘me’ than the Apple Music app.
@mikkoh Thanks! Albums should definitely not be losing your place in the queue between sessions, so please send a set of diagnostic logs and details on what happened next time that happens :)
@johnvoorhees Prologue for listen to audiobooks out of Plex. Only started using it recently to listen to a bunch of books I got via Humble Bundle. It’s clean and polished looking, and I don’t think it has ever not worked or made me feel it was lacking.
@wyldphyre didn’t even know I needed this, installing now!

@johnvoorhees Mapstr because it solves brilliantly a basic problem: how to save addresses you want to visit someday (without having to remember who and when somebody told you about it) It’s also great for planning trips visits.

@eiffair Thanks! This looks very interesting. I'll give it a try.
@johnvoorhees @gamebutler by @maxhandelman for me. Such a great game tracking app which pulls data from IGDB and also has a single payment option rather than subscription which is nice to see. https://apps.apple.com/us/app/gamebutler/id6448645963?uo=4

@johnvoorhees Must be @chronicling for me. I’ll never forget anymore when was the last time I did something. I also love it’s shortcuts integration.
@johnvoorhees I heard you currently don’t have a read later service? 😜
I’ve been trying/using Omnivore for some time now. It’s open source, not really full of features (yet?), but it does the things it’s providing well.
Haven’t heard people talk about it too much before.
https://omnivore.app/
Omnivore

Omnivore is the free, open source, read-it-later app for serious readers.

Omnivore
@johnvoorhees The latest addition for me is CallSheet by @caseyliss.
@johnvoorhees Beeper is a game-changer for me. One app to rule them all, at least for Telegram, WhatsApp, Messenger, and Messages. It works on MacOS and iOS, so it’s even beyond my imagination.

@johnvoorhees I’d like to shout out Matter. There seems to be an influx of new read-it-later services as Instapaper and Pocket have languished, and Matter has won out for me.

Its simple, minimalist design and ability to automatically pull in email newsletters are what made it stand out among its competitors. It’s the first new app I’ve put on my home screen since… I don’t even know… Spectre?

@johnvoorhees I’ve been using Magnet for years
Are, but I’m just trying Moom. A “few” more options. And hexagons, of course. I’m also playing with Joy, from the guy that made PastePal. Interesting utility that gives me better access to some chat gpt options.

@johnvoorhees Onrise. Not perfect but a great simple habit tracker.

Bear 2 is a great update!

@johnvoorhees I recently started using Tailscale and it's friggin amazing. Also: Hello Kitty Island Adventure is soooo good!
@johnvoorhees @viticci I’ve really been enjoying the ease of use of Callsheet from @caseyliss. Just what the doctor ordered.
@gedeonm Thanks so much, Ged. Means a lot coming from you. 🥰

Nebo

@johnvoorhees @viticci

The new #Bear update. It’s just prettier than  Notes.

#Tripsy travel app. Wow.

#Flighty. Obviously.

#Michelin Guide for travel. Finding reliably good recommendations is frustratingly difficult. This is the best I’ve found, and quite recently. (No dark mode, though. 🤬)

@johnvoorhees Personal Best ( @personalbest), made by @shaundon. Cool overview of all workouts, easily comparable, custom lists/rankings. Nice usage of Widgets and Sharesheets. Has a good Watch App, as well.
@johnvoorhees @foodnoms nutrition tracker because it’s clean and simple compared to all the other fitness/nutrition apps out there
