An observation on how #Mastodon is growing 👀

Over the past month, multiple journalists from top outlets have contacted me related to content I’ve shared.

While this was not uncommon on #Twitter when I was active there, it’s relatively new for me in the #fediverse. I suspect this suggests professional news outlets are becoming more comfortable here & posts have increasing impact. Good.

@Sheril That's very good news, indeed. Glad to hear it
Thanks for that update. We’re counting on it.
cc @Green_Footballs
@Sheril your posts are always interesting, good to know jornalist are paying attention
@Sheril The Fediverse is most definitely improving and X is getting worse
@MatthewLennig @Sheril I've been on Mastodon more lately because when I notice I'm not seeing somebody on Twitter I assume they quit and moved here. Often I find they're posting on Twitter still but I don't see them in my feed. They also often post to both so I add here where things work reliably.
@MatthewLennig @Sheril Anyone who knows how to get such a username here could assist me.
@Sheril maybe you cam mention them so we can follow.
@Sheril This is good news. I hope more jump onboard soon. It would be great if governments joined the #Fediverse. I don’t know why all levels of government haven’t tried yet. It’s not as if they have a lot to lose. It’s just another place they would post on.
@Sheril I just wish it were growing rather than steadily losing users again.

@Sheril I can't see this as a good thing. A good chunk of the toxicity on Twitter comes directly from journalists. Not only that, a majority used Twitter as a broadcast medium, then spent their time complaining that their followers are angry trolls.

The fewer journalists on the Fediverse, the better. Last time they tried to join, they spent 2 months complaining about features missing that were used to harass others... then went back to the Nazis on Twitter

@sortius @Sheril Yes, there are plenty of toxic journalists on Twitter, but the Twitter algorithm rewards toxidity.

It's better for everyone if journalists operate in a non-toxic environment. And if they insist on being toxic, they get called out on it or blocked.

@juergen_hubert @Sheril it'd be nice if it worked that way. There's been repeated instances of journalists bringing their toxicity here. I still have journa.host blocked, as do many people.

Blaming "the algorithm" for people's behaviour is the vogue right now, we just need to be conscious of the dangers of blaming everything on "the algorithm"

@sortius @Sheril Oh, people will do what they want.

But the algorithm gives a greater voice to toxicity. And if we want to build up non-toxic journalism - something that I think is desperately needed - then what is a better place than the #Fediverse ?

@juergen_hubert again, it doesn't work like that. Journalism has become a toxic industry. The people in it are toxic. I say this as someone who worked for the 2nd biggest news organisation in Australia.

Twitter just gave them a place to be toxic in public

@sortius @juergen_hubert you should self host your instance and then defederate every other instance that a journalist joins. That’ll show them!
@owlchemist @juergen_hubert thanks for the input reply guy
@sortius @juergen_hubert you are very welcome, complainer dude!
@owlchemist you do realise you're the person people talk about when they say "The problem with Mastodon is the reply guys", right?

@sortius @juergen_hubert @Sheril it's not vogue. Nobody is blaming the algorithm for bad human behaviour, but for spreading that behaviour to generate engagement.

I see almost no awful behaviour here, because the people I follow don't repost it.

On Twitter, I get posts from people arguing and being awful pushed on my timeline.

@aristeon89 @juergen_hubert @Sheril really? You see "almost no awful behaviour here"?

I see it every time journalists arrive on the platform. There was the refusal for journa.host, the journalists instance, to remove trans-hate. There was the time journalists started harassing admins and devs to add features no one wanted. Oh, and there's the unending "Mastodon won't work without advertising" from the very same journalists

@sortius @juergen_hubert @Sheril I didn't say that awful behaviour doesn't happen, I said I don't see it myself. But I saw plenty of it on the birdsite. And I saw it because the Twitter algorithm was showing it to me.
@Sheril interesting. news entities are not early adopters; we are seeing the start of early majority in social tech shift.

@Sheril Mastodon will quickly replace Xwitter as a source of breaking and heavily researched news.

Why? Because there is a need for it, and noone else is providing it.

This is actually how the old Twitter first got noticed.

@Sheril yes, please! I know so many scientists hesitant to leave Twitter and try something. I think some bc they like the science Twitter community. Some because they like their followers. As someone who didn't feel safe in Twitter and left, it's a terrible thing to see all these people who discuss #dei fail to realize they're keeping a toxic place as the best social media for science. 😥
@Sheril *buckles up and keeps my hands and feet inside the vehicle*
@Sheril yeah, and a lot of folks who are news-adjacent like myself have properly migrated here since the X thing.
@Sheril the BBC is on the right track setting up their own instance. Journalists need to understand that corporate owned media is not their friend.
@Sheril
Musk has basically destroyed Twitter - my feed has become about 90% garbage over the past weeks. That probably has a lot to do w/people migrating to here recently!
@Sheril
I just joined the party, glad am not too late, hehe
@Sheril sounds exciting, I'm glad we're all contributing to the growth

@Sheril

Happy about the development but disappointed about the still relatively small numbers.

Most importantly though, I'm cross at so many media organizations not being present here (yet ?) and their ongoing engagement on fascist #xitter .
History won't be kind to them.

@Sheril I have not had that experience yet, but perhaps it depends on which field? Interesting that you have. We shall keep plodding on over here nonetheless - a principle is a principle....
@Sheril also, Mastodon toots show up in Google searches/Google Alerts.

@Sheril

Good to see this trend. I think members of the #Mastodon community would be well served by encouraging the best members of the fact and truth based #journalism world to join a more thoughtful #SocialMedia community rather than the degrading #Twitter / #X mess

See a recent piece below on the subject 👇

@Sheril As I understand it, PBS left Twitter after being labeled state-media. I didn't know there would be people from PBS on Mastodon!

Where can I find other PBS news feeds on mastodon?

@Sheril I've only just joined Mastodon, but it already seems a much friendlier place than Twitter. Not to mention Twitter's discovery system is a pain to get noticed and my feed was full of things I didn't want to see!

@Sheril @ShaunTheAuthor Welcome aboard and have fun. I tend to view Mastodon as a coffee shop where a lot of little convos are going on and you can just join in or do some people watching. Sometimes I check out other instances with the Federated section and just stop the feed and go down a bit and see what's going on and comment.

I like that it's not just some America-centric thing and you get a lot of perspectives from around the world (and it makes me wanna learn German since I signed up under a German-run instance--hee hee). Because it's not full or our screaming American politics and echo-chambers, it's a lot less stressful to just navigate and say stuff. Sometimes I find off the wall stuff to comment on and people are surprised I replied.

You won't always be engaged with, but there's also not that stupid pressure to constantly engage, either, which is fair. Even though it's online, my own introvert battery can't handle constant scrolling and posting... and yet this morning I'm making a liar out of myself by making some rather lengthy responses (hee hee). In short, have fun.

@caffeinatedbookdragon @Sheril as someone who is English and has lived in England for my entire life, I agree that it's good that Mastodon isn't America-centric. On Reddit and Twitter (the two social medias I used the most) 90% of the "popular" posts are about American politics. Which, as someone who has absolutely no stake in American politics, is quite boring. Hoping to find more likeminded people here to just chat with. The coffeeshop analogy was very promising!
@Sheril dropped X a month or 2 ago & only look at Mastodon now. Seems like there has been significant growth the last couple months
@Sheril its because musk hates open source
@Sheril multiple organizations, governments and companies are in the process of starting Fediverse instances. Journalists will be where the news is, so they are following.
It doesn’t have to be fast, as long as it keeps growing!
