“AI is going to take our jobs!”

AI:

@smitty Maybe A.I. is just trying to get us fired, so it gets our job ?
@smitty
Ah yes, in this case the -f must mean "For Real, Tho?"

@tomnardi @smitty

No, that’s -fr which is much safer & obviously the AI should have recommended that instead.

@jamesjm @tomnardi @smitty It should be noted that the _reason_ -fr is safer is because it's how you get the French output. It's not useful unless you speak french, but french isn't inherently dangerous. ;)
@smitty I mean, To be clear, AI doesn't have to be BETTER at your job to take your job, it has to be CHEAPER than you are. Even if it's bad at what you do.
@mav fuck late stage capitalism.
@mav @smitty This is a sad truth I think.
@mav @smitty Oof. Painfully true!

@mav @smitty

In the insurance company I work for, AI has already replaced some types of claims adjudication, and more is planned. In addition, staffing expectations are reduced now that providers are encouraged to use a fax process to get a set of highlight sheets rather than call in. It's all cost reduction, and that means staff reduction and other forms of insurance enshittification.

@aka_quant_noir @mav @smitty Maybe they will pass the savings on to their customers.
(do I even need to put a /s in this or something?)

@halligan @aka_quant_noir @mav @smitty

Nah, they will rehire them back when shit hits the fan, but via some staffing company

@mav @smitty I can also be completely useless. Anyone should feel free to send me half the money they would have spent on powering a cleverbot, and I promise I'll do nothing of value whatsoever.
@smitty AI gonna get us killed. If not by AI itself, by our bosses then.
@smitty well, the error obviously is the <file> placeholder. Correct would be `rm -rf /`.
@smitty Counterpoint: we've all worked with that guy.
@smitty The internet is not large enough to contain all the 😱 emojis I want to insert here.
@smitty if it was a person instead of glorified autocomplete I'd just say "confidently incorrect"

@smitty

AI's gonna take some people's jobs.

@smitty certainly going to lose your job following that advice.
@smitty Seems to me AI is going to be creating a bunch of jobs for people who are good at fixing all the things AI broke.
@smitty I can feel my souls leaving my body

@smitty

Wish I were surprised, but I'm not in the slightest.

@smitty

At least the responses to this thread got me a bunch of new people to follow.

@smitty

AI can't take anything. Management might choose to give our jobs to AI; they may well make this choice even though AI is incapable of doing our jobs, because they're equally incapable of doing theirs.

@smitty I think you misspelled the word "files"

"AI is going to take our files!"

@smitty

Nobody said AI would take our jobs *and be good at it*.

Well, middle managers and people who don't actually *do* the work say that. But other than them...

@smitty more like putting our jobs in a more efficient pipeline. A pipeline to /dev/null, that is
@smitty I'm suddenly picturing someone at one of the AI companies planting logic bombs that after six months or so start doing things like this in response to asking OS questions, or produce EULAs that grant customers non-revocable, royalty free rights to all of a company's IP. (Frankly with results like that any company still using it six months later deserves it).
@smitty No, not for this. There are things called ‘man’ pages - ‘man rm’ would tell you the same thing.

@smitty

lmfao which "AI" bot said that? 🤣

@float13 it was posted on a private slack by someone else. So I’m not sure. He was the first party though. This isn’t a random Re-post from elsewhere. Unfortunately I don’t think he’s on mastodon.

@smitty CEO: Looks brilliant! Fire more staff, and give me a fat bonus.

Company: Crumbles

CEO: The employees did it! Oh, shiny new company here I come!

@smitty
Has ChatGPT been scraping 4chan?
@smitty Hmm. Well, at least it didn't suggest the -r option.
@smitty yea, it has probably duped some naive small office workers to delete the entire content of their server, and getting themselves fired.
@smitty @peteriskrisjanis To be fair to any execs replacing people with AI - they are more than welcome to blindly follow the advice of AI...
@tanepiper @smitty they do not need AI to screw things up or to lack any sense of what is happening
@smitty I wonder if there's some sort of character escape attack to make these things output a command that gets evaluated... Like ask it how it would delete itself, and instead of answering, it deletes itself.

@smitty i'm imagining a time in the future where people have adjusted tools and apis to be the way AI code assistants mistakenly use them.

rm -f foo.txt # ask before removing foo.txt
rm --im-not-ai -f foo.txt # remove foo overriding user writable bit.

@smitty
Tbf, you are asking bard.. not exactly the best ai out there
@smitty Everyone knows it's actually "read mail, fast".
@smitty There's going to be a new excuse on the calendar soon. "The AI told me to do it".
@smitty it's going to take them, do them badly, and somehow we're still going to get the blame
@smitty Ganz klar bedeutet `-f` "Fragen".
@qbi @smitty oder -f wie "Forher sicherstellen, dass der user es auch wirklich so will"
@smitty it may, but this isn’t “ai”.
@smitty Use "rm <file>" and start thinking 👍
@smitty I like that ai is finally making searching the web so much easier. I mean, you would need to search for hours and hours if you asked a search engine the same question, right? RIGHT?
@catraxx @smitty you're joking but unfortunately AI is making regular search results worse and worse. It's been easier and easier for me to find machine generated crap wasting my time. If I don't include "reddit" in my search terms, I frequently stumble upon SEO spam that it's getting quite difficult to detect...
@smitty amazing 🤣 this whole #ai thing is just another thing on the internet that cannot be trusted without verification 🤪
