#RPGaDAY2023
[1] The first ttrpg I ever played was Engel ('Angel(s)') by Oliver Graute, Oliver Hoffmann and Kai Meyer. It’s very rule light and played with tarot cards.
The setting is a post-apocalyptic world with a strong church that has the ultimate argument why you should believe in god – actual angels (the player characters) that fight against the insectoid demons which threaten humanity.
There are some Warhammer-like ideas in it, but where Warhammer is over the top, Engel is tragedy.
#RPGaDAY2023
[2] The first ttrpg I gmed was 'The Dark Eye', an unofficial adventure about the final exams at the mage academy of Andergast.
It was somewhat fun, but none of us knew how to handle the fighting system (especially not me), so that was the bad part…
I’d like to gm regularly again. I like being a player, too, if the GM knows what they are doing, but gming is a different kind of experience. But then I think about doing it after work every week and I feel too tired to volunteer.
#RPGaDAY2023
[3] The first game I bought this year might have been #BrindlewoodBay though I'm not completely sure.
Not exactly my style, but I want to play it with my grandma and I think it may be HER style. : )
#RPGaDAY2023
[4] The most recent game I bought is probably #Spire.
I haven’t played it yet and therefore don't want to judge the rules, but I’m in love with the setting.
You play in the eponymous city Spire, a tower-like structure that defies the rules of statics and reality itself; as suppressed dark elves who revolt against the high elves who conquered their city.
I haven’t found any boring class, faction or area yet – they are all pretty crazy.
#RPGaDAY2023
[5] The oldest Game I played was #GURPS, I think. Not too long ago, and not a very long time. It sure FELT old.
Though, we shouldn’t forget that the first edition of #TheDarkEye is older than the first edition of GURPS. A little bit.
#RPGaDAY2023
[6] My favorite game I never get to play is #Pendragon.
It’s a ttrpg about King Arthur and his knights of the round table … with all the strange logic of Arthurian epics.
I don’t even know if it’s good, but I like the idea. Maybe I would be disappointed.
#RPGaDAY2023
[7] I nominate #BitD for its super smart flashback mechanic.
Everybody knows situations where a player complains: “But my char isn’t stupid and would have thought of that!”
Sometimes the GM rolls their eyes and says “Ok, I don’t care, you can have it.” or “No, you didn’t say that, deal with the consequences.”.
In Blades you can always have a flashback – but you have to pay the price in stress.
So the game takes something players want to do and gives you a mechanic.
#RPGaDAY2023
[8] Not my favourite char of all times, but one that really surprised me:
She was the bandit queen from #BandOfBlades , the antagonist of a special mission, but we recruited her and someone had to play her.
I volunteered unenthusiastically, but then it clicked. The char just WORKED, though it was very much out of my comfort zone. She was more of a comic relief character, and I’m usually not a big fan of those.
I’m still fascinated, because I don’t know what made her different.
#RPGaDAY2023
[9] Stupid question - stupid answer. I declare this d20 my favourite die, bound to my service. ^^
It is green with pink speckles, exactly like the bike I had as a child.
I prefer systems that use d6 these days, but I still love the d20. It's so iconic for the whole hobby, isn't it?
#RPGaDAY2023
[10] I don't know if tie-in fiction is a thing for me.
I disliked the few older #TheDarkEye novels I read for research purposes. But I hear the more recent ones are way better.
And there are some #BitD novels I want to read because of the setting.
[11] The weirdest - yet really fun - game I played so far was the #DCC #funnel , where you have four characters at the same time and see which one survives and becomes your medium-term main char.
I emphasize 'medium-term' because the game stays pretty deadly.
#RPGaDAY2023
[12] An old game I still play is definitely #TheDarkEye .
Yes, I know. But we are committed now. None of us is leaving before #BahamuthsRuf is finished. Watch us die heroically. ^^
And guess where I am now. #RatCon23

#RPGaDAY2023
[13] A fellow player character dissolved in light, because his god took him in, and he went straight to paradise without the inconvenience of death.
It was more of an ascension than a demise, but we lost the character, and it was memorable, because it was a VERY long-played character and his relationship to his god hasn’t been always easy.
#RPGaDAY2023
[13.1] Most memorable character demise REVERSE.
We played a #Cthulhu one shot. We expected to die or go mad, because that's what happens, right?
But in the end, my character, a petty thief on the run, not only survived, but became rich and saved the damsel in distress!
(The others, of course, died or went mad. Because that's what happens, right?)
#RPGaDAY2023
[14] I have bought lots of cool stuff at conventions. Dice, regularly. The Dune rulebook, lately.
But seriously? My best investment at the #RatCon23 was an overpriced thermos of peppermint tea for 10€ – for me and my players. : )
#RPGaDAY2023
[15] I don’t really have recommendations for a good one-shot. I enjoy long-term character development; therefore, I don’t play one-shots very often. But I see their value - especially to get to know new systems and/or players.
I think it’s best to use systems that are specially designed for one-shots, but of course, that’s not always what you want.
#RPGaDAY2023
[16] I told you about my plans to play #BrindlewoodBay with my own grandma, right? Well … I’d love to have those cute little suspect cards with original artwork for this.
But shipping to Europe is absurdly expensive. Of course, I could pay it … it just feels wrong for a handful of playing cards. So ... maybe not.
#RPGaDAY2023
[17] Funny is not what I’m usually here for, but Grant Howitt has not only made #Spire, but also makes hilarious (and gratis) one-page RPGs.
As a #DarkSouls fan, I want to point out "Fucked up little men" where you play all the weird, crestfallen NPCs who give cryptic 'advice' to the 'hero' while laughing at him. You even get your personal refrain like … well, mostly "heh, heh, heh".
#RPGaDAY2023
[18] My favourite game system is the system of #BitD and related #FitD games. I start to miss it when playing other games, although there are other cool systems out there.
You have a pool of D6 and usually the best result counts. 1-3 is failure, 4-5 is success with complications, and a 6 is pure success. Plus position, effect, flashbacks, stress, group actions etc.
#RPGaDAY2023
[19] My favourite published adventure…
I sometimes get nostalgic about 'Staub und Sterne' (Dust and Stars) for The Dark Eye.
It doesn’t SOUND special. You fight a dark mage in his tower in the desert, where he enslaves people and prepares for resurrecting an even worse dark mage half-god. But it was special for us, because we were all pretty new to role-playing and we loved it.
#RPGaDAY2023
[20] Don’t know what I’ll be playing in 20 years, but I definitely intend to play SOMETHING.
#RPGaDAY2023
[21] Licensed RPGs tend to be bad. Usually, when I’m hyped about one because of its setting, it ends in disappointment for me.
But I liked #Dune and #Alien, so there are exceptions.
#RPGaDAY2023
[22] I bought the three academy books for #TheDarkEye 4.1 secondhand when they were no longer available and did not regret it.
I think it’s admirable that the authors managed to flesh out 43 (!) unique and interesting mage academies.
They make wonderful character backgrounds. You get a feeling who someone IS who lived and studied there for many years.
#RPGaDAY2023
[23] Coolest looking RPG book … so, today is #MörkBorg day, right? I never played it nor am I especially interested, but it’s the first to come to mind. Great #coffeetable RPG.
But actually … most RPG books I own are beautiful. If they were not; I wouldn’t have bought a physical copy.
#Spire #Agon #BitD #BandOfBlades Engel
#RPGaDAY2023
[24] One of the simplest RPG I ever played was "Don’t walk in Winter Wood".
You have no stats – just a name, a role and a motivation to go into the Winter Wood, even though you have been warned about it for your whole life. When you enter the wood, you get your first cold marker and one more every time you encounter something terrible.
And with every cold marker you accumulate, it gets harder to succeed…
@Chembael How did that work logistically? Did you not have a character then, or did you switch out?
@Rianq Oh, that's because it was Band of Blades. In Band of Blades you play a whole army together.
You get one char from the command staff, and you can have a 'main character', but you won't always be able to play them, so you play other members of the army who would be NPCs in other games. But by playing them, you can make them protagonists, too.
@Chembael Oh, I see! Thanks for explaining

@Chembael 6. Favorite game you NEVER get to play: If that’s what I never could play: Engel. https://web.archive.org/web/20060509173954/http://www.white-wolf.com/engelweb/ehtml/index.html

If it’s about a game I played but never get to play these days: Mechanical Dream. https://web.archive.org/web/20081103090839/http://www.steamlogic.com/

engel: introitus

#RPGaDAY2023 7. SMARTEST game I’ve played: The original #Dungeonslayers with its one-sheet adventures. That masterfully played on the tropes, was very easy to get into, and in passing fixed the biggest shortcoming of the D20.
@Chembael
It's a great game, but I very much recommend using safety tools when playing as it skews very dark.
