Here's a little sneak peek for what would have been Apollo for iPad. You have stackable panes allowing you to easily view and move through multiple things at once (or go full screen!), Gallery Mode, and sections are moved to the side, with support for opening new tabs

The gesture system felt so great and natural (inspired by
Loren Brichter’s 2011 Tweetie for iPad). Really nice physics and weight, and automatically adapted to iPhone size. Took so long to get right. Quick demo:

The app was still rough in many areas, but I loved where it was going

@christianselig that looks dope! Shame it never saw the light of day… 😔
@christianselig It would’ve been a great iPad app. At least you have all of these tricks to apply to your future projects, whatever they may be.
@christianselig So bummed this died before it even had a chance! Looks like it would have been a real throwback to the early glory days of apps optimized for iPad.
@christianselig This is fantastic looking. Really a shame they wouldn’t play ball in anyway. Their apps blow in comparison.
@christianselig how hard would it be to modify the app to support the fediverse? Lemmy and Mastadon can always use higher quality apps.
@christianselig This alone would have made me want to buy an iPad 😢
@christianselig Make an Appollo for Lemmy :)

@christianselig I’m sure you just want to move on to greener pastures, but wefwef née Voyager for Lemmy just makes me miss Apollo that much more.

You can count me as +1 guaranteed subscription if you decided to go for it…

@christianselig Tweetie was such a great iPad app. Those panels felt so good.
@christianselig such a missed opportunity, it looks fantastic. That said, an e-reader with those lovely weighted page-turns would be fantastic.
@christianselig Clearly your cats wrote the sample text. ('hot cat mud’ had me spit out my drink)
@christianselig seems like you’re itching to make a #mastodon client 😉
@christianselig make it a mastodon client but instead of subreddits, use hashtags that you can follow
@christianselig It makes my heart hurt. Could you make a browser that does this instead? The interaction mode feels so great for research I wish you could apply it somewhere!
@christianselig gosh that looks amazing. But my sadness has returned after realizing it will never see the light of day :(
@christianselig It’s such a shame you never got the chance to release this. I hope you can find some way to repurpose all this work in a future app.
@christianselig could Apollo be adapted for Lemmy or ActivityPub in general? Is there a business case for you?

@christianselig This would have been great

I'm not crying, it's just someone's ego in my eye

@christianselig Missing Apollo every hour of every day :(
@christianselig God damn, man. That would have been glorious.
@christianselig I’m loving Mona for Mastadon, I would kill for Apollo for lemmy!
@tweece @christianselig An Apollo’s for Lemmy and/or KBin would have been sweet!

@tweece @christianselig an official Apollo app would be amazing

Memmy, Mlem, and Voyager are three pretty decent lemmy apps that all seem to be Apollo-inspired if you want a partial experience

@lackthought @christianselig I’ve been using mlem and it’s just ok. Definitely needs a lot of time in the oven
@lackthought @tweece @christianselig Memmy does acknowledge the inspiration somewhere, though I can't find it atm. It's not anywhere near Apollo, nor nearly as polished, but it feels familiar.
@wurzbacher @lackthought @christianselig I disliked memmy when I tried it, feels very non-native to iOS. That’s what I liked the most about Apollo. Mlem feels more native, but also missing way more features and constant bugs (can’t seem to send replies in the latest alpha for example, just a blank sheet)
@tweece @wurzbacher @lackthought @christianselig Memmy has been upgraded so much recently. They even have the sunset theme as an homage to Apollo.
@tweece Yeah Memmy feels non-native because they chose to make an iOS only app in React Native for some reason, so it'll never really feel right though at least they can make an Android version if they want... Mlem is written in native Swift and SwiftUI so it really is iOS native. Definitely missing some features, but they've been smashing bugs lately and development is moving quickly. It's become my go to iOS Lemmy client now.
@christianselig The Duke Nukem Forever equivalent of an iPad app.
@christianselig that looks really nice 🙁
@christianselig please make Apollo for #Lemmy.
@john
@christianselig
Not Apollo but the closest https://vger.app
Voyager for Lemmy

Voyager is a beautiful mobile web client for Lemmy. Enjoy a seamless experience browsing the fediverse.

@americanjesus @christianselig yeah, I have another “not Apollo” app, Memmy for Lemmy. But it’s not Apollo.
@americanjesus @john Well that's creepy
Are you okay with apps like Voyager that try to recreate Apollo for a different platform? Might just be the autism acting up but it doesn’t sound like it :v
@christianselig @americanjesus @john idk why you think it as creepy, because it follows close to your design? (ik vger says it's inspired by apollo but i never used apollo), it's a bummer that reddit did all of these and apollo is no more but because of apollo, there are a many people out there creating 3rd party apps for lemmy now. i think your app inspired many of them.
@christianselig Now you’re just making me sad. Oh can you bring the store back for Apollo shirts? I missed it as I was out of town on vacation (didn’t want to order & have it delivered while I was away).
Apollo | Cotton Bureau

I'm a software developer from Halifax, Nova Scotia. I build Apollo for Reddit!

@christianselig Found it! Got me some shirts & a hat!
@christianselig oh it’s cruel-day today isn’t it? 😂
@christianselig have you considered just revamping for the fediverse?
@Iamgroot11 @christianselig “just” when used to talk about software has a great tendency to minimize the level of potential effort required…as a software engineer the word “just” is the bane of my existence.
@christianselig You *could* rename it “Apollo for iPad for Lemmy”…
@christianselig This looks amazing! I’m not crying! 😭
@christianselig This would have been so good on my iPad mini. We need more apps thoughtfully designed for iPadOS. I’m sad we will never get to experience this.
@christianselig I’ll be honest, the whole #Reddit debacle started my journey of getting off social media and for that, I’m happy. I literally haven’t been on Reddit (other than reading a few posts because of answers I was looking for) in forever. Haven’t logged in since the API announcement but I miss Apollo so much. It was such a great client.
@christianselig that would have been a great experience. Too bad things turned it the way they did. Do you have any plans to create a Mastodon app? I really miss your gesture based navigation from Apollo 😩😭
@christianselig Please bring the Apollo core to a Lemmy client. That would have been amazing 🥲
@christianselig glad we don’t get to have that, would have been horrible. Lucky Reddit saved us 😭
@christianselig loved and miss Apollo Christian. Not tempted to build a Lemmy app?
@christianselig wow. That would have been amazing, of course!
