Yes, it's two-handed & out-of-range, thus has disadvantage, but it's worth the risk. Spider's got 12HP, and our Ranger's mighty crossbow does 1d8+5 damage. Crossbow does same damage as rapier, but we lost our shield because it's 2-handed. Ranged vs melee is kind of a wash (better vs ranged monsters, worse vs melee obviously) but losing the shield made it worse...

@ftl @dungeons If it makes you feel better, crossbow doesn't get disadvantage against aquatic creatures, so we might be able to take a killer whale or reef shark or something... πŸ˜‰

@cacophonated @dungeons When the night crew was faced with a choice of keeping our 1d8 rapier and shield; swapping the rapier for a hand crossbow; or throwing away the rapier and shield and taking the two-handed 1d8 light crossbow... guess what extremely non-optimal choice they made?
