Twitter is now paying people to spread hate

Reminder: if you’re still on Twitter—your presence and your interactions generate revenue. You’re literally funding the alt right.

@flexghost Cat turd has probably purchased a vacation home in Monaco with their share.
I could puke.

@CatDragon

That dude really reflects his base

@flexghost @CatDragon Guillermo del Toro really got into the beer and food!
@CatDragon @flexghost I cant believe he's just blatantly funding the alt right like this online, so many people around the world are struggling and he's giving the money to people who spew hate and garbage online
@mariskus @flexghost because he’s absolute trash . Also? It inspires his fan base to spew hate in the hope they get on the payroll.
Toxic influencer is now a career choice.
@flexghost fuck twitter, fuck Musk, and fuck the alt right
@flexghost @Tweetfiction it’s absolute madness. Meta has mega problems. They aren’t paying their creators. Apparently they’re currently experiencing delays in the content monetisation policy checks for VOD. Whatever that means. There’s literally a Social Media platform war going on. Sounds like all those platforms are fighting for the attention of content creators and users. No matter how ethical it is. It’s all about attention. Apparently Meta still wants to connect to Mastodon.
@TheQueensMindset @flexghost @Tweetfiction Correct about the war: The economic model that created these platforms is reaching saturation with diminishing returns possibly due to brands cutting back on purchasing advertising. The economy is in a strange spot for many people as well, and that means they will be more particular about their dollar spending. Paying creators drives more effort from them on the platform, Youtube/Twitch have done this best via superchats. Twitter Blue=cash to creators.
@TheQueensMindset @flexghost @Tweetfiction “A strange game. The only winning move is not to play.”
@TheQueensMindset @flexghost @Tweetfiction Sorry, I disagree. PreMusk was becoming very, very dangerous to the entities that believe they rule the worlds. For all it's warts, it unwittingly, unintentionally became an incredible instrument of democracy. The truest public square we had, it cut their filters (MSM) out of the equation. Our reach, our sources for information grew exponentially ( all of us spread across the globe). We could see it all for ourselves and decide what was of value. cont,
@TheQueensMindset @flexghost @Tweetfiction continuation: They could just have musk come in and destroy it. Others would crop up. Unless you could disguise the goal by populating the landscape with flawed alternatives. For the life of me I don't understand how people lost sight of the fact its easy to reinvent the wheel. Instead clumsy, incompetent options are presented. No one ponders if thats by design? Make no mistake, musk is winning, he suffocated the public square.
@flexghost Reminder: If you are paying for products/services of any company advertising on Twitter, you are funding the alt-right.
@flexghost At the end of a podcast "You can reach us on Facebook and Mastodn. And if you are still on Twittrr...Ask yourself Why?"
@ConanTheActuarian @flexghost
People use Twitter for the same reasons they always have.
It's ubiquitous, and serves as a way to see events, both real-world or esoteric/online as they are happening.
You just don't really get that from anywhere else currently.
Mastodon can also do this if they get enough users.
Threads probably stands a better chance based simply on the ease of on-ramping via Instragram/FB.
@flexghost and twitter is blocking blind people from deleting their accounts. to contact them to deactivate an account you have to solve an image captcha!! maybe time to contact the ico about space karen's so-called free speech. so I don't have the free speech to say "delete my data" do I not? watch out, another lawsuit for musklet!
@flexghost Paying to speak is free speech in rightwing crazypants land, I guess.

@obscurestar Didn't you know? Money is the purest form of speech. The Supreme Court said so.

(Now, where's all my free money?)

@flexghost Thanks for tooting this. I would have missed it otherwise. I posted it over on Twitter as my likely last attempt to get my friends and colleagues to leave the site. I realized that I should have checked w/ you first about putting your message there given the substance of your toot. So, please let me know if you would prefer that I delete my tweet. https://twitter.com/CoreyRYung/status/1679617865924657157
Corey Yung @[email protected] on Twitter

“For the first (and likely last) time, I'm posting a toot from Mastodon on Twitter, instead of the inverse, b/c it highlights a growing problem. Giving content to this site puts $$$ in the pockets of neo-Nazis. Staying here is a choice w/ consequences. https://t.co/Ne3nTZ8amo”

Twitter

@coreyrayburnyung ❤️❤️

You got a good heart kid

@flexghost @Techronic9876 Do bluechecks get a cut of ads shown near their tweets? What is “ad-revenue split” on #birdsite ?
Dare Obasanjo (@[email protected])

Twitter is going to start paying popular users for views. Current calculations look like $8.50 per million views. Looking at my Twitter analytics data I’d be making $250 - $450 a month if I restarted posting there actively. This is probably the first smart move I’ve seen from Elon at Twitter. This is exactly how competition makes things better for users. https://techcrunch.com/2023/07/13/twitter-starts-sharing-ad-revenue-with-verified-creators/

mas.to
@flexghost they're using stripe connect huh
@grumpasaurus me not caring and getting my nails done
@flexghost managed to use the below form to send twatter a message. if they dont delete everything, then off to the Irish DPR they will go! and the ico!

@flexghost Why does this feel like a snake oil businessman is now running a MLM? Can't pay rent, legal fees, owed severances, but can pay these dipshits? On brand.

@flexghost if they cared so much about free speech, why are they thanking Elon?

Mastodon has existed since like 2017 right? Why couldn't these free-speech people spin up a Mastodon server

@flexghost I don't think Elons platform is truly free speech anyways, neither Threads, Truth Social or anything else

The only free speech social media is the one you own and run

@experiencersinternational @flexghost

Am I at war with #ArtificialIntelligence? I want to live #AlgorithmFree. I want to make my own mind up. Rich people want to make my mind up for me, in a way that benefits them.

@experiencersinternational @flexghost some self proclaimed free speech people started servers, but they are disconnected from most of the network, because freedom of speech does not mean anybody has to listen 😉

@flexghost two things:

1 - no one anywhere is trying to limit your free speech, unless a) you’re trying to pass hate speech off as free speech, or b) you’re Elon actually, literally limiting people’s freedom of speech.

2 - we need a list of these advertisers to bigin the boycotts.

@OGjester working on the advertisers. For some reason, they thought it was OK to start paying Nazi Twitter again but at the same time they didn’t wanna make it known they were doing it? Interesting.
@flexghost $5 that $7,03 6 check bounces

@flexghost I'm ready to leave tbf. I just not fully understand how to use Mastodon atm (literal noob lmao), my peeps aren't here (yet?) and I need to stay informed, but my usage has diminished since last week.

Elon deliberately destroyed an "ok" info-sharing website to propel his ilk into the mainstream, and for what? We all know this revenue program will further fuel rage-baiting (both troll and genuine). Hope this is the final nail in the coffin. 🤞🙏

@arielcajar @flexghost what do you not understand yet? I'd be willing to explain
@flexghost

Reminder: if you’re still on United States of America —your presence and your interactions generate revenue. You’re literally funding the alt right. Just leave bro its easy

@via

imagine having the dumbest take on the Internet and then sharing it with everyone

🏆

@flexghost they are paying hateful people to spread hate. Those they choose say a lot about the company not one bit of it good.
@Susan_Larson_TN I feel like Twitter has given reason after reason, but people stay on it 🤷🏻‍♀️

@flexghost People on #Mastodon spread hate for free.

Is it really so bad to be paid for creating the content that makes the platform money in the first place?

TECI Social

@realcaseyrollins

Hm. This person is ok with spreading hate

(Does a quick check to see why)

Yep.

@flexghost @realcaseyrollins just becase someo9ne has a cross on their profile picture doesn't mean they are hateful
@flexghost I’m going to share this elsewhere. OK with you? Do you want acknowledgment? Oh and thank you for your posts!
@flexghost when are people gonna realize HATE SPEECH is not FREE SPEECH.
@flexghost I mean as much as I hate Twitter and the alt right, there are *plenty* of other platforms that fund them the same way just because they skirt the rules. Singling out Twitter for this is a bit meh. YouTube and Facebook are two good examples too iirc.

@craftxbox

Whatabout….

🏆

@flexghost This isn't a whataboutism? I'm saying it's disingenuous to act like Twitter is the only one doing this. It *needs* to be mentioned that they are FAR from the only ones.
@flexghost They can't pay their bills to stay open, but they can do this?
@flexghost abandoning Twitter is the equivalent of surrendering territory and empowering the alt right reach to radicalize the public.
