This article was originally published in The Age in November 2012. The republishing of the Leunig cartoon in Pearl and Irritations brought my article to mind.

The popularity of podcasts has created a dynamic where they have prominence of journalism but not the integrity.

The low barrier to entry means podcasts have to compete for guests in ways traditional news interviews did not. Being friendly to guests is necessary as people have an infinite choice of where to provide interviews.

So podcasts are now a place to spread your message in an unchallenged manner, in a way that is not possible in traditional media interviews. Culminating in Joe Rogan.

It’s quite incredible that people voted out of anger that prices are too high and corporations are screwing them when the next guys big ideas are to raise prices even higher via tariffs and cripple the agencies that regulate corporations.
